Sam Peter vs. Rocky Marciano.

Who would win?

I think the bigger, stronger Peter stops Marciano.

Sam Peter would be a big and durable dude that would give Marciano a bit of problems just based on his size and toughness...but I can't imagine he'd be able to hang with Marciano's workrate and relentlessness. I could see Peter dropping or hurting Marciano early, but ultimately The Rock would break down the bigger man, and take a clear cut decision I figure.

Is this serious?

Yeah, lets ponder how a career "B" fighter would do against a legend.

Somebody post the size difference, it probably will get you thinking.
I mean Peters wasn't useless.

My guess is Kalan will apply his litmus size test. And would he be totally upside down to do so?
But then again, wasn't Tony about Marciano's size? At least frame wise?
And he gave Sam all he could handle.

So it's at least an interesting exercise in assessing these guys.

I've always thought the Rock was over rated. But I'm not ready to call this for or against him.
But the Toney experience should at least balance the thinking of those who want to go with just the tale of tape here.

Peter vs Marciano?

Peter = 6'2, 245-250 lbs
Rock = 5'10, 185-189 lbs

My guess is "Height is Might" does not compute here.

Marciano is clearly the better fighter. But this feel like 2 guys from different weight classes. Rocky won't box like Toney. He'll wage war.

Peter has all the advantages...height, reach and mass... I think Marciano is good enough to still prevail.

Size really rattles people... For some it's everything. For others they like to dismiss it too readily.

But far more popular, and indeed interesting, than the crude limited Marciano. Ask yourself in all seriousness how Peter would have fared against the 5 men Marciano won and defended his title against, at those stages of their respective careers. If you believe he could have lost to any of them, you are following the wrong sport.

After you have done that apply the same criteria to the rest of Marciano's opponents at " the time " he fought them.
Peter wouldn't have beaten Charles, Walcott or Moore at that stage of their careers.

Based on what? Lets use Charles as an example. What style does he use to knock Ezzard Charles out?

What's with this Sam Peter worship by some of you?

Who the hell did he ever beat to be brought into a discussion of him hanging with an icon like Marciano?

He did topple Toney twice. But while Toney was a terrific fighter, he was well past his best weight at heavy, and was undoubtedly on the decline when he faced Peter.

Otherwise, Peter beat a list of nobodies and continually lost to the better fighters, like the Klitschkos and even Chambers.

Peter did nothing.

The Rock would have had him for breakfast and then spit him out.

If your impressed by size, explain why 7'1" Julius Long (a Peter victim) is such a lousy fighter.

Someone posted a while back about comparing heavys from different eras and taking into consideration changes in the average size and weight of people generally. Rocky was on a whole different level to peter as a boxer and as an athlete. Rocky is a legend of the sport for a whole host of reasons - peter really a b grade fighter. Would the 60lb heavier peter win in a fight between these two - well probably yes he would. He's so much more powerful than anyone in rocky's era. However, if rocky was a fighter in this era he'd probably be more like tyson sized - then he'd ko peter easy. that extra 30lbs would make it a fairer fight and then it'd be down to skill, power, grit etc.

On the other hand i really wouldn't rule out rocky beating peter even at 185lbs - he probably loses but he hit so hard he may have been able to cause more damage even with the size difference then you'd think.

Rocky looks like, and has as much energy as, a middleweight by comparison to Peter.

Agreed, and yet oddly I think his best chance to win between all those names, might be the Rock.

Height and reach are only an advantage if you are able to use them well. Can you you use them to score and not be hit?
Height and reach can actually be a disadvantage fighting on the inside.

At a certain point weight stops being an advantage. At a later point, it becomes a disadvantage. Weighing 250 against a 200 pound fighter is the not the same as a 200 pound fighter going against a 150 pound fighter.

Big heavyweight are often easy to hit. They usually lack good foot movement. They usually lack hand speed. They often have poor stamina. They often don't hit as hard as you would think.

Peter fits most of these categories.

There have been big heavyweights (over 250) in every era going back more than 100 years. Often of the time they weren't even contenders.

you do know that the tallest HW of all time never lost a fight right?

Of course he never actually fought a fight either.

But that's a red herring, and has been used and exploited to mislead and disparage his greatness.

The problem is...where are these 200 pound HWs who are cutting through the division?

If size is a disadvantage why doesn't every fighter in the Cruiserweight division simply move up to Heavy and make double or triple the money?

When Ali first came on the scene he was a relative giant compared to vast majority of top HWs that had come before him.

Bowe and Lewis... When imagining them up against the greatest of the division...their best feature is their size.

Being big doesn't mean you're better. But it's a real advantage in 95% of cases.

I Agree... It's the WRONG matchup for Marciano.. LIke matching little teeny Joe Frazier with the big 6'3" X 217 George Foreman, who was a big underdog.. You see, the Marciano who took 9 rounds to dispose of Don Cockell -- a pathetic dog who was previously knocked out many times, including by Middleweight Randy Turpin no less -- would go down versus the hammering fists of Sam Peter.. At his best---in the Waldimir fight---Peter could absorb an unbelievable punch---that was before Vitali got hold of Peter and wrecked his chin.. Peter could absorb a dynamite punch and could also hit hard.. Sam Peter smashed several big swingers like Jeremy Williams out very quickly like they were nothing at all.

Come to think of it... I think the big swinging Jeremy Williams would be a perfect match-up for Rocky... Williams was as easy to hit as Don Cockell.. Rocky could probably get him out in the late rounds.. It sure wouldn't be easy because Rocky weighed 184 at his best, while Jeremy Williams ran about 225 and was very strong.. I wouldn't bet on such a fight because of the huge size disparity.. But If the quick fisted Peter could smack Williams out so quickly, I think Lil Rocky might get to him eventually.
