amateur tactics

Post by Bard of Boxrec »

Question- In amateur bouts, is it necessary to boss the fight, or can you just outbox your opponent? If your opponent keeps coming forward in traditional amateur style but you have a good jab, surely you'd dissuade him. does clever fighting actually happen in the amateurs or is it just two guys trying to force the pace quicker than the other?

Well when i used to box i used to see alot of fighters just throwing punches to get points(very sloppy) but their are also the fighters that have good technique i.e nice combos, jabs, head movement. From my past experinces i used to see alot of judges fooled by the fighter who is coming forward even though their not landing(those are the non experince judges) but if a fighter is coming forward and landing ocassionaly but still getting outboxed they may still have the advantage in getting a decision because their pressing the fight and thats what most judges like to see, it's very different than the pros.

Amatuer judges are instructed to count landed punches to get winner of round. If no clean punches or there are an even number of punches, you go with the aggresssor, then better defense, then best style. Except in electronic scoring. Advised to claim a winner of a round than scoring even.
