It's not like he's even a consistent 'almost man' either:

Blown out in two by Groves
Outclassed and stopped by novice Degale (who under a year later went life and death with Wilczewski)
Lost a competitive but fair decision to AA (cards too wide, but overblown as a robbery), then widely beaten in the rematch
Embarrassingly overweight and way out of his depth against Ward

But, then again, he does do a hell of a job beating Eastern European binmen in 6 and 8 rounders. I guess you can't really deny that he deserves world title fights after all.

He's a very easy defence and an easy paycheck for any champ. Even if it's just 10-20k at the end of the day, its easy money beating someone with zero natural talent like Smith

He's had his chances now, they surely can't get him in another world title fight and expect people to even slightly care. Not world level, not even top British level these days which was basically where he peaked at in his prime.

The guy hasn't had a win over a vaguely competitive opponent since June 2013. And that was Tony Dodson, who had been beaten at domestic level numerous times before then.

He's lived off winning a handful of rounds in the first Abraham fight (and moaning about the "robbery").

Even in today's climate of multi-champs, it will take the soggy biscuit if he gets another shot without a half-decent win.

It total bollocks and the arguement that multiple titles improve the lot of all boxers is gash as it just devalues the sport and the earning power of British, Area, Euro, etc titles.

Multiple belts are the single biggest problem in boxing. Bar none

I don't dispute a word you've said there Fizz.

But even with 4 titles (or more if you include lesser organisations and 'regular' champions) there should be more than enough talent at 168lbs to find 4 decent challengers for the titles, that don't include Paul bloody Smith, the guy shouldn't be ranked top 30, let alone title challenger
Here's fighnews rankings with the WBA top 15 below. Paul Smith does not feature in anyones top 15 (and neither he should)

http://www.fightnews.com/rankings-2

1. Fedor Chudinov
2. George Groves
3. Isaac Ekpo
4. Stanyslav Kashtanov
5. Giovanni De Carolis
6. Anthony Dirrell
7. David Benavidez
8. Martin Murray
9. Vincent Feigenbutz
10. Dilmurod Satybaldiev
11. Jesse Hart
12. Zac Dunn
13. Caleb Truax
14. Robin Krasniqi
15. Mickael Diallo

There is no way this guy should be challenging at world level, none what so ever.

The boxing fans need to start voting with their feet, it's like the ppv debate, when we are faced with utterly undeserving fighters getting shots and paydays, the only people with the power to show this shouldn't be happening is the fans

But, have a feeling we saw the best of Smith vs Dodson and the first fight with Abraham and that after the rematch and especially the Ward fiasco, his connections rather than his achievements or ability are more to do with another title shot.

I'd rather see Callum built up with more purposeful fights and have his crack, which I believe he'll deliver the goods in as a tremendous offensive talent. I feel Callum is a hard enough puncher, and the guy to validate the Joe Gallagher style of patient, offensive fighting that some are so critical of.

Would love to see Paul in domestic fights, think there's some terrific fights out there for him - but he reminds me of Stephen Foster Jr, another guy from a considerable boxing family who seemed to have a feeling of entitlement that stopped him from having these tremendous fights at his own level.
Burns isn't a good example. He has had far better wins and even now well past his best is on another level to Paul Smith. I kind of get your point though.

Think we will have to get used to Eddie recycling Paul Smith , Stephen Smith , Anthony Crolla , Scott Quigg for world title shots over the next 2 years with the sky dates he has to fill can't see any other way he can work it with what he says about every Saturday fight night having a world title fight in a arena .

Yeah- Burns isn't a good example imo. Whilst he was never the greatest "world champion" he has some decent wins on his record and he probably put in a better showing against Crawford than quite a few have. The Gonzalez fight was impressive aswell. He was getting badly outboxed and getting his ass handed to him quite thoroughly to be frank; however he showed a ton of heart and grit and pushed through the rough patches and eventually metaphorically drowned Gonzalez eventually basically.

Yes, sure!
Apologies for my laziness, bit rude that!
It’s a bit like saying every team in Europe (or the world) should play soccer for one cup! Absolutely pointless - and obviously so, imo.
There might be problems with certain organizations - I often read that the WBA for instance are an utter farce ...or is that the WBC - but surely the problem lies with the bodies and not the fact of there being a few of them.
This ain’t football.....it’s boxing. Essentially, noone gives a toss, it’s a bit murky and plenty of cranks are involved. Mind you, to be fair, look at the degenerates involved in football..
No worries!
The point is that they do though - the world cup! Most other sports do likewise as well.

Boxing is more like the FA cup, where some minnow can get pitched in against Premier League multi-millionaires. Difference is boxing does it round, after round, after round.

If we want the truly big fights consistently one belt per one weight class forces this. We devalue Area, national and continnenetal belts otherwise

100% agreed. Smith isn't top four in the UK at the weight of Jnr has moved up, and he could easily be 7-8. He'd be lucky to get a British title shot without an elimintaor FFS

Definitely Burns had better wins, way better. Didn't mean to make a direct comparison.

Just that I was truly fed up of Burns before he had that really good fight with Relikh. He wouldn't go away, like Freddy Kruger. In a similar manner Smith has worn very thin to me. And that both seem to get their chances regardless of their success. Maybe Smith will put in a strong showing, receive praise and validate his chance, who knows what can happen.

Smith is the least likely guy to get these chances because the second Abraham fight could easily have been "it" for him. As the rematch was no robbery, if the first even was that. Around this time, Joe Gallagher had said he'd put Smith in with anyone bar Andre Ward. Then he got a shit at Ward, a fight in which everything that could go wrong appeared to.

And now another it fight??

On the plus side, he's getting some paydays in a career that appeared to be going nowhere after the defeat to Bendall.

Wish he would just retire hes been spanked at every world level fighter if it was 30 years ago he wouldn't have even got a euro title shot

There's determination to be a champion and then there are people who just don't understand that they aren't good enough.

It's an insult to compare Paul Smith to Ricky Burns TBH.

Yes the Di Rocco fight was an absolute joke I DO NOT consider Burns to be a legit world champion and I absolutely hate the three weight world title rubbish thrown about by Sky.

Smith has never achieved anything above domestic level yet he has felt entitled to having a world title fight 'waiting on the call' whilst fighting 6 rounders at 5pm. Sure Ricky didn't deserve his shot against Martinez first time but he proved he was legit in what my opinion is one of the most underrated wins in British boxing.

Even when Burns lost to Crawford he never once mouthed off on social media and IFL how he should get a world title fight agin how he is world level etc etc.

The disgusting thing is there are fighters out there Now getting pushed out of title pictures for the likes of Paul Smith. Situations like this I look back at how Jamie Moore never got a world title fight. He had 10x the ability and in his prime would have destroyed Liam Smith who won a belt and Brian Rose who fought for a belt at light middle.
