Who is the best heavyweight (p4p/natural) ever

Post by Jip »

in a p4p sense, which heavyweight had the best skills? I'd say tie 86 mike tyson/ 65 muhammad ali

in a natural sense, which heavyweight was the best? I'd say tie 98 lennox lewis/ 03 vitaly klitschko

P4P Joe Louis. Marciano and Tunney are up there too.

P4P - Joe Louis, Larry Holmes, Muhammad Ali, Evander Holyfield in no particular order
Natural - Muhammad Ali and prime Riddick Bowe. If Bowe had Lewis'/Holyfield's/Klitshcko's determination and work ethic, he would have had amazing legacy.

Why 98 Lewis? I'd say Lennox looked much better in 99-01 (with Holyfield-1, Tua, Rahman-2 being his best fights ever) than in any fight of 1998 (Briggs, Mavrovic).

In terms of talent, even after all these years of watching Ali footage I'm still awed by his hand speed, footwork, and reflexes.

Not Ali because he got hit way too much - and way too easily... Not Marciano because he was too short, too light, too slow, too stubby, and too unskilled

Louis was too chinny and got dropped too often... Tunney was too small, but maybe the best boxer ever... Dempsey was ferocious and brutal, but too wild... Jeffries was too slow... Liston was too hittable... Foreman got too fat between fights and lacked discipline, and wasn't naturally clever... Frazier was too small and hittable... Bowe was too hittable and not very bright to say the least... Holyfield wasn't a natural and he wasn't big, but he was half smart and the hardest worker ever... Mike Tyson had natural speed and power but not real good smarts... Fury is natrually clever and ambidextrous. His height, weight, and reach are unbelievable. But he lacks emotional stability and mental strength... Wilder is a Hell of a natural athlete with speed and power, but he's really not that smart...

Johnson may be in the running... Vitali may be in the running... Lewis may be in the running... Holmes may be in the running... Wladimir may be in the running... Ortiz may be in the running... Haye may be in the running... and Joshua is in the running... So 1 of those 8 is the best natural talent

In a p4p sense, it would have to be a smaller heavy like Charles or Tunney, surely.

Natural, I think Ali just before his ban is the best heavyweight I've ever seen and he was getting better. It's a shame he didn't fight in 67-70, because he would have been at his absolute peak.

I think Tyson was the most deadly boxer for a period of time but i wouldn't say he had the best skills. I'm in agreement with you on Lennox in 98 as the best. Ridiculous big and thunder in both hands. It's too bad that Lennox didn't have a world class chin though. Even when Lewis was running through title defenses, his fights were stressful because we knew that one punch could come and make him do nanights. But we're talking about skills here, not chin. So my vote goes to Lewis, then Ali and then Holmes for most skilled heavyweights of all time.
