Would love to see Paul in domestic fights, think there's some terrific fights out there for him - but he reminds me of Stephen Foster Jr, another guy from a considerable boxing family who seemed to have a feeling of entitlement that stopped him from having these tremendous fights at his own level.
Burns isn't a good example. He has had far better wins and even now well past his best is on another level to Paul Smith. I kind of get your point though.
Definitely Burns had better wins, way better. Didn't mean to make a direct comparison.
Just that I was truly fed up of Burns before he had that really good fight with Relikh. He wouldn't go away, like Freddy Kruger. In a similar manner Smith has worn very thin to me. And that both seem to get their chances regardless of their success. Maybe Smith will put in a strong showing, receive praise and validate his chance, who knows what can happen.
Smith is the least likely guy to get these chances because the second Abraham fight could easily have been "it" for him. As the rematch was no robbery, if the first even was that. Around this time, Joe Gallagher had said he'd put Smith in with anyone bar Andre Ward. Then he got a poo at Ward, a fight in which everything that could go wrong appeared to.
And now another it fight??
On the plus side, he's getting some paydays in a career that appeared to be going nowhere after the defeat to Bendall.

Smith has no business getting a title shot, but there also was no way Sauerland was going to let Zeuge fight a legitimate opponent anyway. He had never beaten anyone with a pulse before Sauerland brought by far the weakest of alphabet belt holders, De Carolis, to Germany to lose his belt to him.
Always felt if he and Macklin could've been at the same weight at the same time, it'd have been an outstanding fight and they'd bring the best out of each other.

Macklin could operate at world level and was worthy of his shots. Smith is a dud! He hasn't even got any stand out victories on his slate!

None of them are world class, maybe Callum is heading in that direction but he hasn't proved it yet. The worst thing about this situation is that when Paul's next on Sky droning on about some fight or other, the presenter will ask him with no hint of irony how preparations are going for his world title shot and how proud he will be to follow in Liam's footsteps and become a world champion and Paul will reply that he's always believed he would be a world champion and he was robbed in the Abraham fight blah blah blah and he's delighted to get the chance to prove that he's the best in the world blah blah blah and we have to sit there and listen to this guff as though it were true when we know it's nonsense, Paul knows it's nonsense and the interviewer knows it's nonsense.
Can't blame a guy for trying to earn a crust by bullsh1ttting gullible fans but Paul wouldn't win a British title these days and from a sporting perspective he should really retire
