BIG UPS TO BRITISH FANS FROM AN EMBARRASSED YANK!!

Post by shoutout »

joe calzaghe proved that he is far better than i gave him credit far & clearly showed his best years are not behind him!! :TU:

his domination of lacy was comprehensive in every sense of the word & altho lacy may have been a bit overhyped, this takes nothing away from joe's sensational performance...

my only regret for joe is that time is not on his side & i hope he can make up for lost time by fighting the joneses, johnsons or tarvers that will get him the big bucks he deserves instead of wasting his time with the likes of kessler & the ridiculously mentioned markus beyer!!

the only thing that keeps me from being totally embarrassed is the fact that many brits expected him to lose to lacy as well (47% based on poll i posted last week). they say misery loves company, so i guess embarrassment does too!!

Well said, nice to see someone handling this with a bit of class. I was one of those who picked against Joe, and I can say now, I'm happy to be wrong.

He won't get the big bucks for the Kessler fight but it would definitely be the hardest potential opponent for him (unles Winky Wright is willing to move up a division), in terms of skill/ability and the fact that Kessler is at his peak

The true boxing fan would like to see the Calzaghe v Kessler, but it won't be a great in terms of the marketability factor, given that kessler is pretty much unknown in the USA. Therefore in all likelihood Calzaghe will face the winner of Hopkins v Tarver.

I don't know, Calzaghe's become a major international name all of a sudden and unification bouts are pretty big. If they want to make a fight for JC in July in (was it) Cardiff, certainly won't be Tarver. Showtime and The Ring have been showing interest in Kessler; someone make this fight. Showtime have been interested in unifications - they did great work with cruiserweight already...

as for predicting the JC-JL fight, I've slagged Joe off before due to his awful 2004-05 schedule, but a week before the fight I picked Calzaghe to win. I recalled the way he fights up/down to his opponent, so I figured it could be a Hopkins-Tito type thing where the older guy who had the frustrating career would be inspired into doing something special when pressed by an aggressive star in the making. Never seen him put punches together that way before though

i have to differ with you on that!!! i think that tarver is not only a better financial move for joe...but a MUCH TOUGHER MATCHUP than the relatively unproven kessler!! i know a lot of folks here are high on the dane, but what is his career-defining fight?!? the win over mundine?!? :o or perhaps his stoppage of the mediocre manny siaca!!

sorry, i'm not impressed until kessler fights someone truly world class...after what joe did to lacy, kessler will have to do a lot more than simply having a wba belt to earn a crack at calzaghe!!! :TU:

seems like kessler's ready to step above the level of battering titlists with his jab. an undefated guy, he's hungry, willing to travel, and has a lot going for him. A superb talent in need of a big fight. He's definitely a level above the Siacas, Mundines, the Lucas' etc.

Tarver fights Hopkins in June (I think) and that's another boring fight for AT, but Warren wants to line up a July date for Calzaghe, so no Tarver yet. I actually think Tarver is for the taking, and from the evidence of his fights with a good pressure guy, is vulnerable in physical fights.

right now, we can't be sure that Tarver's trying to market his Hopkins fight and mention Calzaghe to give it more meaning. (That's what I thought Warren did with Calzaghe-Salem; talk of Lacy to make a non-fight have a buzz around it...)

I'd get excited about a Tarver fight if Joe clears up at 168. AT does have some skills and power. I'll get stick for saying this, but I think Markus Beyer is boxing better than Tarver at the moment. Just been looking at beyer vs Sheika for the 1st time, and Markus is fornicating sharp!

An IBF belt is all Lacy had to do to fight Calzaghe....and he won a vacant belt after not winning his eliminator fight...at least Kessler won the belt off of someone, albeit not the strongest WBA champ I've ever seen...

the point is that calzaghe has earned a big payday against the likes of a jones, johnson or tarver by beating lacy & he would be foolish to take a fight with the relatively unproven kessler (both fistically & in terms of MARKETABILITY)...joe gets more of a payday & more of a challenging matchup vs tarver!!! :TU:

IMO Kessler is as good a talent as anyone and has dominated enough B level men to take it to the next stage. He's also young, fast and very sharp.

I'd like to see Joe vs Glen Johnson as they hate each other and their styles would gel. In fact, it'd probably be the fight we all thought JC-Lacy would be. Calzaghe called a summer '04 fight off, saying "he's nothing but a journeyman", Johnson said in numerous interviews "he's a joke"

On the other hand, Tarver and Jones to various degrees have a tired sloppy look to them. They're also very defensive fighters, moreso with age. So if they fought Calzaghe, who looks shockingly fresh and battered Lacy with 1006 punches they'd go into spoiler mode. I pick Joe to have too much for them but it's not like he's going to look good

there's not too many ppl to showcase Joe against for America. Glen Johnson, certainly.

Where did you get those punch stats, he didn't really land 1006 shots did he?

it was on that ITV 4 program last night. Rosenthal says to Joe, 'we counted how many times u hit him, do u know how many?' joe says, 'hmm, a lot probably' and then he told him 1006

If that's true, that's surely got to be a record of some sort, I cannot think of another super middleweight contest where anyone landed that many shots.

Did they say how many he threw. Thought it seemed like 1000+ thrown but 1006 landed - very impressive

He couldn't have landed 1006 punches.......thrown maybe

1006 punches = approx 85 per round
85 per round = approx 1 punch every 2 seconds

Lacy took a right thrashing  but he wasn't shipping a punch every 2 seconds for the full 12

He probably landed somewhere in the 5-600 range...50% for a title fight is insane....and I think Joe eclipsed that pretty easily.

Found this article on what Lacy thinks althought the poster left no link.

By JOHN C. COTEY, Times Staff Writer
Published March 10, 2006

TAMPA - Former super-middleweight champion Jeff Lacy promised Thursday he'll be back, dismissing those who think his career is finished after Saturday's loss to Joe Calzaghe and saying an October fight at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa is all but finalized.

Lacy, 28, said he will step away from boxing the next few months to enjoy life, then will answer the question about whether the 12-round beating he took from Calzaghe was severe enough to drown his once promising career.

"I really don't think that's the case," said Lacy, who was unsure who his next opponent will be. "If it is, we'll find out in October."

It was an upbeat Lacy who described his loss to Calzaghe as a learning experience, if still unable to fully explain why he was thoroughly dominated. Put simply, he said he just didn't have it Saturday night.

For seven minutes Wednesday night, the St. Petersburg native watched the Showtime replay of a fighter getting hit at will, who wouldn't fight back, dazed and confused on his stool between rounds, well on his way to a lopsided loss - a unanimous decision - that surprised many in its completeness.

Then he changed the channel.

"I couldn't watch any more," Lacy said, over a lunch of cajun talapia and shrimp he barely touched. "I looked like I was lost. It looks like I'm drugged. That wasn't me. I was a punching bag out there."

Lacy (21-1) said he felt stronger than he ever had before a fight, convinced in the locker room that he was going to win Calzaghe's WBO title by knockout.

As they stood face to face during the referee's instructions, that belief grew stronger, he said. "I went back to the corner thinking I'm going to kill this guy," Lacy said.

But after throwing one punch, a left jab that missed, everything went wrong for the former Olympian. Calzaghe handled him on the inside, peppered him with stinging combinations and dominated every minute of every round.

In response to the Welsh fighter, Lacy could only answer with one or two wild haymakers a round, none landing.

"I could hear what (trainer Dan Birmingham) was telling me, but as far as me throwing punches, I had no control," he said. "I'm thinking it in the ring, but it's not coming out. It's so hard to explain. It was like having no arms but you think you do. It's crazy. I sit back and hear myself talk, if the person doesn't really believe me they might think I'm crazy."

It wasn't long before Lacy figured he was in for a long night.

"At first, I figured I was just starting slow like I always do," he said. "The second round was a blur. The third round I was thinking, don't worry, you're going to get stronger. The sixth, seven, eighth round ... that's when I was like, man, what the hell is going on?"

So Lacy prayed.

"I said, "Lord, please, put me in this fight. Please, put me in this fight for just one round, and I swear I'll knock him out.' I could hear (my corner) talking to me, but I was asking the Lord to put me in the fight."

There was no divine intervention, and Lacy finished the fight on his feet ... barely.

There were warning signs before the fight, Lacy said, that a bad performance was forthcoming. He said he "lost that spark" about three weeks into training, but kept it from Birmingham.

Coming off five fights in 13 months, the former IBF champ said he went into training every day thinking, "I need a vacation.

"It's not an excuse, but I should have taken one," he said.

And for the first time before a fight, Lacy dreamt he lost.

"That's never happened," he said. "I mean, I woke up like what the (heck). I was so mad at myself."

Lacy, 28, said he would like a rematch, though that appears unlikely. But he remains confident his career will get back on track.

He had his stitches removed Thursday, four from above his left eye and two from above his right. Both eyes still have shiners, and his nose and mouth remain swollen. But he said his MRI exam and brain scan came back positive, and physically there is no lingering damage from the loss.

Mentally, he's confident he will heal as well.

"I've been looking for answers the last three days," Lacy said. "But why beat myself up. Everything happens for a reason. We're going to rebuild from here, and come October, I'm going to show people that that wasn't me."
Maybe the way he was looking was nerves after all and not just anger and building himself up for a big fight.

Lacy was well agitated in the lead up to the fight; he thought he could just channel it into rage but couldn't have been more wrong. too much huffing and puffing, an dhe end sup looking a twat.

can't belief how those current sceners are constantly telling themselves how crap Lacy is now. like some kid waking up from a nightmare, "It's only a dream, it's only a dream..."

Not sure whether you're referring to me, but if so let's set the record straight: I never thought Calzaghe-Lacy would be a superfight, partly because of Calzaghe, but mainly because of Lacy. I got quite a bit of stick a couple of months back when I published my super-middleweight ranking as

1 Kessler
2 Calzaghe
3 Mundine
4 Beyer
5 Green
6 Lacy.

This, incidentally, is my ranking also today.

IMO a lot of folks here are selling tarver short...not only against calzaghe but hopkins as well...many here seem to be picking b-hop to ACTUALLY BEAT TARVER!! :o

i know antonio is favored by the oddsmakers vs hopkins & i expect him to be favored over calzaghe as well... not only has the low mileage but unexciting tarver beaten the man (jones), but also the man who also beat the man (johnson)...his last 2 losses were both DISPUTED decisions against those same two!!! i believe he is a very young 36 due to his "low mileage" & IMO the only thing that could cause him to lose vs hopkins is if he is EXTREMELY DISTRACTED by filming of rocky6 & totally loses focus!!

altho he will not be as big a favorite over calzaghe as he is hopkins i still expect the smart money (oddsmakers in casinos) to be on tarver if & when he fights joe...unless of course he looks really ragged vs b-hop!!!

and then you continue doing the same with Kessler?

Have you learned NOTHING from this? As others will tell you too, Kessler would wipe the floor with Tarver, Taylor etc. Only serious opponent in 168-175 is indeed ... Calzaghe.

his domination of lacy was comprehensive in every sense of the word & altho lacy may have been a bit overhyped, this takes nothing away from joe's sensational performance...

my only regret for joe is that time is not on his side & i hope he can make up for lost time by fighting the joneses, johnsons or tarvers that will get him the big bucks he deserves instead of wasting his time with the likes of kessler & the ridiculously mentioned markus beyer!!

the only thing that keeps me from being totally embarrassed is the fact that many brits expected him to lose to lacy as well (47% based on poll i posted last week). they say misery loves company, so i guess embarrassment does too!!

your presumption that just because i underrrated calzaghe means i automatically rate ALL EUROS is A BIT OF A STRETCH, to say the least...if & when kessler proves to be able to "wipe the floor with tarver & taylor"or anyone of similar caliber, i will be glad to own up to my mistake...question is will you be able to own up to it if & when HE DOESNT?!?

there are just as many "OTHERS" who would tell you that kessler is still unproven & overrated, so i am not alone in that!! kessler has never beaten anyone NEAR the caliber of chris eubank & one of the reason i underrated joe was because...to quote myself--"his best years are behind him" & i was wrong...he is still at the top of his game...

in vast contrast, kessler has feasted on the likes of lucas, siaca & other mediocre super middles & this is why MANY share my opinion that, while he may yet yet prove to be very good...he has done NOTHING to prove it so far!!!
