Trivia Pursuit

Post by Norm »

Whenever I see a boxing poster in an old movie or program, I'm always curious whether it is real or made-for the show. When watching an episode of 'The Honeymooners' this morning, the episode being 'A Man's Pride,' originally aired September 22, 1956, I noticed odd inconsistencies in the lettering. This prompted a little investigation.

It didn't take long to figure out Joey Giambra and from there I'm pretty sure the poster is from his bout against Jimmy Herring on December 4, 1953.

I don't know what the reason, copyright?, but they disguised the boxers' names on the posters like this at times.

I did the same thing a few months ago when the episode was on (or possibly a different episode). . . there is another poster on the other wall as well - both are real and you can go to BoxRec and get the results. (I have no life :KO: ) - Somebody in the art direction department must have been a fight fan, maybe Gleason himself. He was very hands on with the show, and he would play Maish Rennick (the manager) in Requiem for a Heavyweight.

Yes, I'm sure we're taking about the same episode. There are 2 posters I can't figure out. This is one -

Link did not work! - I had figured them both out myself but forgot what they said - I would like to see it again - was blocked by some 'editor's only' note.

I didn't realize the link may not work. Go to the date of Friday 1 January 1954 and look at the New York City card at Madison Square Garden.
