Good performance from Tate it was the 1st time I'd seen him,he's quite a tidy boxer,Olympic gold medalist, I thought he dominated Sibson for the most part,Tony was always in it and aggressive but it wasn't effective aggression and Tate looked the far superior fighter IMO,Sibson was having was having a good spell not long before the end but Tate was busting him up right before the KO

Yeah your right CP Sibson looked great against Collins,worked the jab well against the taller man and walked right through him

Sibson vs Tate

1. 9 - 10 Tate. Nice slick operator Tate. Sibson doing some good work pressuring Tate, but never landed often cleanly. Nice contrast of style.
2. 9 - 10 Tate. Similar to the first, Tate looks in control with the jab, able to soak up the bouts of pressure and come back with something each time
3. 9 - 10 Tate. His movement and reactions meant Sibson landed very little. Tate threw enough to win it, just. Able to back Sibson up when he needs to, not a good sign for Tony
4. 9 - 10 Tate. Sibson just starting to get some joy to the body when he got nailed with a right then pummeled in the middle of the round. Clear Tate round
5. 9 - 10 Tate. Closer round, not close enough to give Sibson a share though
6. 9 - 10 Tate. Pace slowed from Sibson and he's trying to box with the jab. He'll lose that contest all day every day.
7. 9 - 10 Tate. Still Tate boxing well and doing enough to win. Sibson looks out of it, without a big shot or pressure to wear Tate down, this is beyond him
8. 10 - 10. Close but quiet round. Give Sibson credit for trying to up the pace at times. Still missing a lot but Tate did little other than jab and slip shots
9. 10 - 9 Sibson. Best round of the fight, Tony putting pressure on. Not sure if I'm being generous giving him this for effort though
10. TKO correct stoppage, Sibson struggled back to his corner. good shot

83-89 Tate going into 10th

Tate was a tidy efficient boxer, good jerky head movement making Sibson miss. The only chance I gave him after seeing the first couple rounds was landing a big shot or wearing him down with persistent pressure.
The pressure dried up after a few rounds when he realised he was having little effect and not landing much, not sure he had the engine for it and when he did pick it back up in the 8/9/10 rounds, he paid the price and got nailed. Those middle round where Sibson was boxing behind the jab and not closing the range were playing into Tates hands and allowed him to control the pace and style of the bout to suit him to a tee

Tate did what he had to and I gave Sibson very little, certainly had it wider than the commentry or any of the judges. Felt Tate was patient and fought the right game plan but often left you asking if he could have done more to be more convincing.

Sibson was virtually retired, and sickened with boxing for sometime, when his trainer Ken Squires encouraged him to take one more fight against Brian Anderson convincing him if he won he'd get the lonsdale belt for Keeps for his parents. He took the fight and was outstanding.
Because of this success , the money being offered and the chance at a world title forced him to accept the fight with Tate.
His heart was never in it and he struggled in training due to pain in his left shoulder. About a week before the fight his ex promoter, Mickey Duff commenced legal proceedings against Sibson which was reported widely in the press. By fight time Tony's head was all over the place.
Regardless of this, when I reviewed the fight in detail for the book, if I remember correctly I had Tony winning 3 of the first 7 rounds and well in the fight. However, like his fight with Andries, there came a point ( I think a big right hand from Tate) when you could see his attitude change, and he simply lost heart and concentration. The final punch though was a hard one.
I'm totally biased of course but a focussed Sibson would have beaten Tate, he wouldn't say that because he's got too much integrity, but I'll say it for him.

I didn't like either man's style and I found the rounds hard to score. I wasn't impressed by Tate at all.

Prime Nunn would sort Tate out pretty impressively.

Tate's brother stepped up and gave Julian Jackson a tremendous slugging match, just wouldn't stay down in their fierce 12 rounder.

He looked really good here. And in good shape - I always remember him as fleshy but he looked in top shape here
