But Jack Dempsey was World Champion for 7 years and only fought 6 Title Defenses ... and that was it... That was WAY before PPV or TV. The people who put their butts in the seats are the only ones who paid.. Dempsey didn't pad his record with dozens of non-title fights against 3rd raters.. Talk about 15-rounds??? For Dempsey's 2 fights with Gene Tunney he insisted they be 10-round fights.. Rickard nearly had a heart attack telling Dempsey that wouldn't work -- but they were the 2 richest fights with the largest gates, and made and the most money until the 1970's... And that was in the 1920's.

Your comparing apples with pears. The HW division has always been where the money is, in those times a welterweight would never earn the same sort of money. SRR got $33,000 for one welterweight title defence over Fusari (SRR donated it all to charity) and I believe the biggest purse he got was $250,000 when he fought Maxim.

In response to the OP lilpug, I was very fortunate as a fan because I was also a pro fighter, a sparring partner & also worked in various capacities for many top promoters across the eastern seaboard when I was younger, so most of my friends came from that world, so I was never at a loss for people to talk boxing with or watch fights with. We'd always have get together's during HBO fights or PPVs, it was great. It is with great fondness that I recall those days.
Unfortunately, over the years after I was no longer actively involved in the game those friends drifted away including my two best friends who both moved out of state with their families about seven years ago, leaving me in pretty much the same situation as you're in now.
