Bigger robbery, "Foreman-Schulz" of '95 or "Foreman-Briggs" of '97?

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Take a few seconds and think back. Who was more shocked after the cards were totalized in 1995 and in 1997 when George Foreman faced both "Schulz and Briggs" on regular HBO?

I admit the '95 fight between Foreman and Axel Schulz was close and could've gone either way, but I was happy when Foreman got the call after 12 rds. However, on the flip side, I was pissed like the devil when the judges handed the lineal title over to Shannon Briggs in 1997 after 12 rds in which most people felt Foreman won without doubt.

SO! What was your biggest pisser offer: "Foreman-Schulz" or "Foreman-Briggs?"

I'd go with Briggs, because of the consequences......almost seemed like a hidden agenda.

But the error of judgment on behalf of the judges ability to assess a fight may have been bigger with Schulz.

Do we know the judges cards on those fights?

Both but Foreman is popular people more mind when he loses than when he wins because of bad judge decisions.

Hard to say. Both decisions were robberies, no question about that. I'd slightly lean toward Foreman - Briggs as the bigger robbery though.

I go with Foreman Briggs because of what happened after. Briggs got a title shot with Lewis immediately after while Foreman career went to the ending stages.

Is there footage of the whole Foreman-Schulz fight online?

I can only find post-fight interviews.

It would be good for people to see both fights one after another would probably vote a more realistic look.

When I watched the fights as they happened I thought the decisions were equally bad but when I later re-watched the bouts I felt the Foreman-Briggs decision was worse.

Schulz was extremely unlucky that night and at the very least it was the draw judge Chuck Giampa called it as.
Worth noting as well that George was seemingly not keen on the rematch and was subsequently stripped of the title.

Schulz was nowt that special - and he got a few 'home calls' himself - but I think he boxed really well that night and perhaps had watched how Morrison had got a result against Foreman and did a good job of being busy and positive without letting Foreman bomb him out.

Both fights I scores in 116: 112 and in fact both are very bad decisions. It is still worse with Schulz as a fight for the IBF belt

BoxRec has the cards listed as...

Foreman vs Schulz: 115-113, 115-113 and 114-114. MD for Foreman.
Foreman vs Briggs: 113-117, 112-116 and 114-114. MD for Briggs.

I don't remember, how exactly I scored both of them, but both just were clear robberies. And Schulz, btw, was robbed in the next fight against Botha in his native Germany (!) for IBF. And then the same kind of loss to Moorer, however, in that case I won't call it a robbery. Golota almost repeated this sequence of controversial unsuccessful title challenges few years later.
