Why Calzaghe shouldn't fight Ottke in Germany
Ottke-Calzaghe
Round One
They come out, touch gloves, and the referee warns Calzaghe for not using the right part of his glove. Ottke runs backwards the rest of the round, all the while protesting to the referee that Calzaghe is trying to hit him. The referee agrees, and warns Calzaghe after he lands a couple of jabs on a retreating Ottke. Calzaghe traps Ottke in a corner, and lands a heavy punch to the body. The referee gives Ottke 30 seconds to recover, as the punch was above the belt.
The judges score it 10-9, all to Ottke.
Round Two
The referee warns Calzaghe for sitting on his stool during the break. Ottke whispers in the referee's ear. The referee warns Calzaghe for being Welsh. Ottke runs backwards for the minute and a half while Calzaghe chases him and gets him with a few jabs. Two minutes into the round, Calzaghe lands a big right, Ottke goes down and bangs his head. The bell immediately signals the end of the round, the referee rules the knockdown a slip, and deducts a point from Calzaghe for hitting Ottke before he was down.
The judges score it 10-8, all to Ottke.
Round Three
The referee warns Calzaghe for using a sponge during the break. Ottke signals that he's tired and wants another minute's rest. Calzaghe's corner is warned for protesting. Eventually Ottke comes out. After running backwards for a minute he suddenly jumps forwards and lands a soft jab on Calzaghe's shoulder. The referee gives Calzaghe a standing 8-count. Calzaghe goes after Ottke, lands a flurry of punches, and the bump on Ottke's head from the previous round starts swelling. Ottke is landing one jab for every two power punches that Calzaghe is landing. The German commentators say this shows how dominant Ottke's ring generalship is, as Calzaghe isn't able to use his jab. The judges agree. 10-7 - a knockdown and a dominant round.
Round Four
Ottke is barely able to look out of his eyes now, and Calzaghe gets a point deducted for hitting him with a punch Ottke couldn't see. Ottke's head is a swollen mess. After a minute-and-a-half, the referee has seen enough. He waves to the timekeeper, who rings the bell for the end of the round.
Judges score 9-9 - to show they're not biased and would have given that round to Calzaghe were it not for the point deduction.
Ottke is unable to come out for round five owing to the bump on his head, but as it wasn't caused by a punch but by his hitting the floor on his way down, they go to the scorecards, and Ottke wins the technical decision 39-33 on all cards.
The Frankfurter Allgemeine praises Ottke's clever performance in out-thinking the gallant Welshman, boxing commentators all over the world who don't care give credit to Ottke for managing to eke out a win against a tough opponent - the sign of a true champion, and boxrec still have Ottke rated at #1 in the weight class....
