Wasn't the original fight supposed to be in Limerick though, and was apparently rescheduled due to poor sales? Not sure what the official reason was so that might be off.Fitzy901 wrote:It didn't look too empty by the time the main event had started, agreed it was nothing like Hatton v Tsyzu but it was pretty busy.ElJefe wrote:The travelling thing is a bit weird, I remember people saying in interviews how big Lee vs Saunders would be in the travelling community yet ticket sales (and general interest) struggled badly.

Was going to say the smith brother myself.Black Sam Bellamy wrote:Considering the amount of publicity they get, the Smith brothers don't appear to shift many tickets. Especially Callum. On the verge of a world title with Sky exposure and he's still not headlined a bill from
Liverpool as far as I can see (apart from a local Derby against Fielding)
Callum was headliner against Mouhammadi but the crowd wasn't massive. There was zero atmosphere when he fought rebrasse at the echo and that was a really good fight aswell.
When Liam Smith defended his WBO belt at the echo barely anyone was there. Course it was against a waster but even then generally you would expect a supposed world champion to draw in their hometown regardless of who they are fighting.
I remember when Stephen smith headlined at the Olympia last year against Boschiero. Everyone was there for Sean Dodd and after he fought Buckland literally almost the entire crowd left and barely anyone was there for Stephen smiths fight.
Paul smith seemed to draw decent crowds when he was British champion 6-7 years ago v Quigley, Dodson and degale but then two of those were local derbys.

Rigondeaux by a million miles. He'd struggle to sell out the sofa if the fight was in his own living room.
Re: Which Highly Ranked Boxer Has The Smallest Fan Base?
I think it's in part his behaviour during the build up to the George Groves fight. I legitimately don't think he realised how painfully unfunny his attempts at humour were, and some fans have never come back to liking him afterwards. He was trying for charismatic trash-talk but he ended up looking an overly arrogant 12-year, whose parents were brother and sister. And as you stated, his ability to do nothing for at least four middle-rounds every fight is a factor in fans feeling slightly blase towards him too.cmdenny wrote:For good/bad I think the challenge in building fan support for the Fury's/BJS is that they are not on Sky. Not sure why DeGale hasn't got a big following though, perhaps many don't gel with his personality / habit of taking a couple of rounds off a fight?
For all his antics Eubank Jnr does generate a lot of interest.
Though it has to be said, Sky haven't helped. They've hardly hyped his fights up, have they? He's a fighter with a World Title, but they don't build up his fights like they do with other people. If anything, he got mentioned more often when George Groves was fighting than anything.

With regards to the Smiths, I assumed that they were big ticket sellers?
Why else would they continue to get the opportunities that they do?
None of them are particularly exciting and there isn't a personality between the lot of them so there must be some reason?

Yeah, definitely Rigo. It's always going to be hard for Cubans as they obviously don't have a proper 'home' crowd to sell to. But Rigo is especially bad; his fighting style doesn't exactly help.PredatorHayds wrote:Rigondeaux by a million miles. He'd struggle to sell out the sofa if the fight was in his own living room.

Scott Quigg. Bar the Frampton fight, he fights in half full arenas with stacked undercards or as the undercard himself.

A decent fanbase of fornicating bellends who strolled in without tickets and sat where they wanted, at least at the Eubank fight. The disorganized venue (shutting down all the toilets inside didn't help, and the views were shite from everywhere) was partly to blame but all I remember about that was an uncomfortable atmosphere of disappointment, boredom and general evil and the open sniffing of coke everywhere and rivers of piss because they made everybody down their drinks before going in to watch the fights.Fitzy901 wrote:BJS has a decent fanbase.
I was at both the Eubank and Saunders fights and both venues would of been complete and utter ghost towns if it wasnt for him.
I think if BJS might once have had a decent fanbase he's squandered it, now.
It pains me to say but Matchroom do things a lot better. I can't remember the last time a fwank show was any good. Was Haye-Chisora fwank? That was a brilliant night.
Re: Which Highly Ranked Boxer Has The Smallest Fan Base?
It was an early allegedly fight. A lot of pubs by me picked up the channel to show that fight, then in the coming months they all slowly got rid of it.clopixolacuphase wrote:

You are exaggerating a little bit.

If you are referring to the Eubank BJS fight my cousin went and said the exact same thing.Fitzy901 wrote:clopixolacuphase wrote:A decent fanbase of effing bellends who strolled in without tickets and sat where they wanted, at least at the Eubank fight. I agree but I assume It's the whole brothers with belts thing that's kept some general interest in them.bripez wrote:With regards to the Smiths, I assumed that they were big ticket sellers?

I kind of agree. I see no other selling point than them all being in the same family.ShadrachSimmo wrote:

It's such an odd thing though - Froch was never a big ticket seller until the time of fighting Kessler/Abraham I think. Again, he had to travel all over to get breaks. Not sure what really changed then suddenly was appreciated and before you knew it selling Wembley out.

That was on the undercard of Fury-Chisora 2 wasn't it? If so, I heard the same as well.Naandrew wrote:If you are referring to the Eubank BJS fight my cousin went and said the exact same thing.Fitzy901 wrote:clopixolacuphase wrote: A decent fanbase of effing bellends who strolled in without tickets and sat where they wanted, at least at the Eubank fight. True - the super 6 tournament was perfect for Froch as he may not have been able to get them fights otherwise fir financial reasons.sharpei_louis wrote:It's such an odd thing though - Froch was never a big ticket seller until the time of fighting Kessler/Abraham I think. Same with David Haye, he was fighting on undercards in leisure centres all over the country even up to winning the world Cruiserweight title (which from memory he had to go to France for).

Froch should always have had a big profile. His fights were exciting and he had a decent local fanbase. After Pascal, which was on ITV, he should have been a much bigger name than he was, but he was promoted pathetically. Froch Taylor should have been a major event but Hennessy couldn't even get the fight on live TV. It was literally on an internet stream and a delayed replay on ITV 4 the next evening.
