Andre Berto vs Chris Algieri on Garcia/Thurman Card?

Post by ElJefe »

Seen a few things on the internet today (Seckbach, Instagram etc) saying that Berto vs Algieri will be on the Garcia vs Thurman card.

Thoughts?

I got Berto by decision in this 147 lb gatekeepers world's championship.

Not a bad fight. If Algieri is still confident in himself and focused I think he'll win this.

Algieri shouldn't have too much of a problem with this version of Berto.

Apart from being gifted a controversial decision against Ruslan Provodnikov, I can't think of any world class fighters at 140lbs or 147lbs that Algieri has defeated, which compels me to favour Andre Berto to emerge victorious by decision.

That said, I'm not overly-excited to see this bout, even though it has the potential to be mildly intriguing, so I really don't give a damn about being right or wrong with my prediction.

Why do we always have to watch Chris Algieri?

Algieri took a brutal pounding and stoppage in his last fight... Berto disposed of Victor Ortiz in his last fight... but then so did Luis Collazo before that.

Berto has been knocked down 7 times in his last 8 fights -- with 4 losses... Algieri was knocked down 11 times in his last 5 fights -- with 3 losses.

Algieri has been brutalized... So has Berto to a smaller extent.. I credit Algieri for taking the Spence fight, a guy nobody wants to mess with.. I think this fight could end up one of those rare draws... Algieri could get the nod, based on the fact that you would tend to look at Algieri more because of the flashy and showy feints, footwork, and other BS that he throws into a fight.. JDJ may have smoothed him out a bit, but he's still very hittable.. If he had any power he could get Berto out.. He doesn't have any.. Berto has some power and Algieri chin may have eroded a bit.. He was also knocked cold in Kickboxing -- out like a light.

Pretty balanced fight. The winner will probably be considered top 15 again, probably not top 10, it depends on the decisiveness of the outcome and which one wins. I would rather see each of them fighting untested fighters like Konstantin Ponomarev and Cesar Miguel Barrionuevo instead of each other; but those fighters don't have the name recognition to bring-in an equivalent amount of money. Perhaps bigger-named prospects like Jose Benavidez and Frankie Gomez. So anyways, I will tolerate Berto - Algieri, but it's not like the result is going to make us seriously reevaluate our theories about how good they are.

He and Berto are pretty evenly matched I'd say. I'd agree with you if it was Thurman vs Algieri but Algieri vs Berto makes sense.

I think Algeri has a lot more in the tank compared to today's version of Berto.

Berto has been brutalized by lesser level fighters than Algeri has. The Floyd fight doesn't really count because even Floyd himself considers it a sparring session. Plus Berto hasn't fought anyone with the speed and power of Spence and Pacquiao.

Look, I think we can all agree that Berto's competition does not compare to Berto's. On any level, any dimension, there's no comparing them.

You missed my point.
Why is he still a name on a major card taking up major limelight?

Who still wants to watch him fight?
How long can he ride that Provodnikov win?
What's Lamont Peterson doing?

Outside of Mayweather, young Berto's resume trumps old Berto's :yay:

He can ride it a little longer when he adds a Berto win to his resume.

You do? Who makes you? Odd to single him out in a Berto fight for overexposure. Are you sure there isn't an underlying reason here?

As pointed out earlier in the thread, Berto would be a superior and more deserving opponent for Berto than Algieri :geek:

Andre Berto is #8 WBC and #3 IBF.
Chris Algieri isn't top 15 (140 & 147) anywhere.

Last 4 fights
Berto: Chambers (W10), Lopez (KO 6), Mayweather (L), Ortiz (KO 4)
Algieri: Manny (L), Khan (L), Bone (W), Spence (KO L)

At first blush You'd think Berto wins this fight comfortably.. And your first instinct is usually correct.. On the other hand Algieri's fight with Khan was really close -- and he had to pick up something from the Spence smashing and the Pac fight---both world class fighters... Either that or it's really hard to pound anything into his head... If he doesn't improve with this fight Algieri is never going to get there -- he's just too weak and light hitting if he doesn't grab some technical skills.

Algieri beat Provo just 3 months before Berto beat Chambers, while Berto lost 5 and 6 fights ago to Karass (by stoppage) and Guerrero (by UD after getting dropped twice and having both eyes nearly shut).I can certainly see why you just happened to settle on the most recent 4  By the way, how much did you complain when Berto kept getting on TV following those losses?

I dont think Berto would beat Khan, Manny, or Spence, so I dont really hold those losses against Algieri in this match.
