Barker vs Macklin.

Who were those four fighters. That never met cos they had different promoters? Steve Roberts was one I think. They all had wbf type belts
Dead right, that should have happened, but both seemed to have an aversion to aeroplane use; something Calzaghe seemed to get over at the end of his career when some paydays against washed up legends were there for him to take up.

To be fair, Calzaghe did fight outside of the UK once, ironically in Germany, whereas I don't recall Ottke ever having a fight outside of Germany. :brick:
I think Calzaghe just didn't want to go to Germany for Ottke as he knew he'd be robbed on the scorecards if it went the distance. I always thought he should have tried to take the risk as he was a level above Ottke for me and probably could have stopped him, but it always seemed like Ottke didn't have any real interest in the fight anyway.

Agreed.

I think Calzaghe was a level above too.

I also think he should have gone after the likes of Jones Jr & Hopkins way earlier than he did.

Like it or not, they were the marquee fighters of the early 00s & the onus would have been on Joe to pitch his tent on their lawns, so to speak.

Quote from Calzaghe after the Will McIntyre fight:
I'm the best, the number one in this division, and I've proved it again and again. Now I want Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins.
He said that in October 2001. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/1597994.stm

Got them seven years later. Shame really.

McGuigan v Fenech 1988/9.

Shame Barry couldn't find that fire again after the Cruz loss.

I actually bet on McDonnell to beat him in the 4th as I knew McGuigan had f*cked up skin tissue. Guessed it would take that long and remember Jim saying he was working on a certain (corkscrew) punch.

Anyway McGuigan v Fenech at their peaks at 126 would have been a cracker.

Also the British Light Middles of the Alexander era would have been a great four fighter competition.

yes if mcguigan had maintained his form, fights with azumah nelson and Jeff French would've been very welcome. And very big.

But, we did end up with a great rivalry in Nelson-Fenech, controversy, drama, action in spades. Ignoring the third fight though.

Alexis Arguello v Danny Lopez,if Arguello had remained a featherweight a bit longer or if Lopez had shot for a championship a bit sooner.

Lewis Bowe fair enough - not that Lennox could do anything about it.

But that is the first time I've ever seen Lewis Ruiz in a 'fights that didn't happen' discussion!

I have always found the Leonard/Pryor one fascinating.

Pryor didn't go up to 147 until 1987, long after Leonard had retired & returned at higher weights.

If he really wanted the Leonard bout, he would have gone up to 147 in 1980, like Roberto Duran who came from the weight class below him.

Leonard had lots of big fishes to fry & Pryor should have put himself on the menu & not waited for a love note from Ray.

This is my answer when asked this question usually aswell.
Arum built it up for ages. On each other's undercards, the buzz for this was huge I even recall Setanta in the UK plugging it saying how huge it was.
They did all the hard work but put it off and I'd go far as to say they both unravelled.

It was a real 50/50 that divided opinion. I fancied JML at the time.Puerto Rico day was always earmarked for it in New York.

To be fair, the title of the thread just asked for fights that never happened.

It didn't specify it had to be fights anybody wanted to watch.

A lot of fights didn't happen for the great light middleweight Terry Norris because he was with Don King and also because he got knocked out, or disqualified, just at the wrong time:

Norris v Chavez, Pernell Whittaker. If he'd caught a smaller guy moving up it would have done his career wonders.

Norris v any of the middleweight champs, during the explosion of talent in the early-mid '90s. (Terry had faced several future middleweights or bigger, losing by KO to Julian Jackson, outpointing future title holder Quincy Taylor, knocking out future 168 titlist Steve Little, outboxing future WBA 160 holder Jorge Castro)
