Too Tall Jones vs Bert Cooper
Re: Too Tall Jones vs Bert Cooper
Oh yeah... Too Tall got up and boxed his way to victory... It was his FIRST fight and ONLY fight that he didn't end by KO... He learned rapidly
Re: Too Tall Jones vs Bert Cooper
And he was hurt bad because his 2nd fight was 10 or 11 days later.
Re: Too Tall Jones vs Bert Cooper
They let you fight again right away if you're hurt right???

Who is they? I've known boxers to be fighting with cracked ribs. I myself had an amateur bout that I tore my ligaments in my ankle and side of my foot. I had another bout the same night and one a week later. You know fûck all about boxing.

I have always been interested in the minority report, S.O.P. for me... and the more odd it is the more I'm curious as to why. So I don't agree with him, but I don't think he's a troll, except to the fragile minded who seem to think anything that's not mainstream must be meant to provoke. He may be just an odd bird....and I'm not overly judgmental on that stuff.....I leave that to the younger smarter turks.
With that said.....I thought you were using the "ignore" feature when it comes to special K? So with that stated I shall pay you a rare compliment.
You have failed at being ignorant.
Re: Too Tall Jones vs Bert Cooper
Well that wasn't head trauma was it???? I've probably had more fights than you and I never suffered cracked ribs or torn ligaments in my ankles and feet.. but if I ever bore those injuries as an amateur I would probably pull out of any fight that wasn't for a national or international title.. If there's a lot at stake you might suck it up for one fight -- if you think there's a good chance you can win with pain injections or whatever you can do for the injuries... Those injuries will heal 100%... but not every type of injury will heal perfectly.Tomasino wrote:Kalan wrote:They let you fight again right away if you're hurt right???

Head trauma is a different matter altogether -- it's your brain... I was fortunate not to suffer any -- but I wouldn't fight for months if I thought I was dinged badly.. How any boxer goes in there within a few months of getting knocked out is beyond me.. It's not a reasonable risk for anyone to take.
And "they" is Too Tall Jones's team.. He was fine after his pro debut -- where he was hit with a savage foul blow after he was pushed down -- and he came back to win.. He was fine after the fight.. If he had a headache or anything I'm certain he wouldn't have had 3 fights in 3 weeks to start his career.

When Ed "Too Tall" Jones was active as a professional boxer for a short period of time, I watched one of his bouts (which may have been tape-delayed) on television and wasn't impressed.

YOU wouldn't be impressed if Too Tall Jones actually got the opportunity to continue his boxing career and went to 50-0 ... For a football player to smash a veteran boxer with a 18-12-1 record in 41 seconds -- only 3 weeks into his career in his 3rd fight -- that's pretty damned impressive..
That's why they erected road blocks for Jones at every turn... I suppose you think Gennady Golovkin was given every Middleweight fight he deserved???

You're just a biased idiot.. Why don't you go on the internet and read about the fight??? ... The fight should be on Youtube, but it's not anywhere on Internet because it's not in the interest of Boxing to have it there.. I saw the pushdown several times because they replayed the pushdown and the foul blow repeatedly on TV... I read the referee's comment in the Los Angeles Times... It was a flagrant foul blow that the referee failed to call... Jones got up and won the fight... That was his pro debut and he won 3 fights in his first 21 days as a professional boxer... How many do that???keithmoonhangover wrote:By you not answering, I'll assume that not only do you not have a link, but that you are a;so making it all up.keithmoonhangover wrote:Do you have a link?Kalan wrote:"I knew he was pushed down and hit while he was down, but I didn't realize he hit him that hard.. Re: Too Tall Jones vs Bert Cooper
He's asking me for a link to a pro debut that happened 37 years ago...Then he's saying I'm making it up because I didn't produce his link... He can go to the newspaper archives himself and look up the stories on the fight and try to find out for himself... They have varying accounts but they will point out Jones was shoved down to the canvas and hit with a brutal foul blow to the head while he was sitting down... There is no dispute on that.

Plenty of fighters who are looking to stay active & build up their records in order to establish themselves in the public's & the press's imaginations used to often go on such barnstorming tours. It certainly wasn't all that unusual back in the day.
Hell, Duane Bobick made a career out of it & more recently, fightings like Charlie "White Lightning" Brown & Mike Tyson did the same thing.
Hell, for quite a stretch back in the 90s, Buck Smith was sometimes fighting twice in two different locations in the same day!

Manute Bol would have crushed Wilt Chamberlain.
Take a look at the footage above if you have any doubts.
Re: Too Tall Jones vs Bert Cooper
Yes, but those weren't rookies who lacked extensive amateur experience -- and who were coming out of the box with no experience... Bobick was an Olympian with over 100 amateur fights... He fought Montes in his 45th professional fight, and it went 2:25 into the 3rd... Too Tall Jones had very few amateur fights, and only 2 professional fights, and smashed Montes out in 41 seconds... It was only 3 weeks into his pro career -- so he EXPECTED to be presented with BETTER opponents -- since he just crushed an experienced pro boxer who had a winning professional record.sweetviolenturge wrote:Kalan wrote:You're just a biased idiot.. But those better opponents never happened.. After throwing opponents at Jones for 3 weeks they didn't "barn storm" Jones.. They kept giving Jones sad excuses about not lining up any opponents for him... "We're working on it.. We're working on it." ... They took forever, but came up with crap-ass opponents -- opponents who were certain to piss off the fans..
Jones was angered about not getting better opponents who could fight.. Especially his 6th pro fight which was a joke.. After giving Jones a ringer with 11 fights for his pro debut -- (doesn't usually happen that way) -- they gave him a guy who never stepped into a ring for his 6th fight.. That's ass backwards.. They didn't want Jones in Boxing.. They didn't want him getting better, and improving rapidly, with progressively better opponents and destroying everybody out there.. And let's be frank about Boxing.. It's WHO you know and WHO you are aligned with that gets you the right fights.. It's not a merit based sport.

Again I say, Manute Bol would have pounded Wilt Chamberlain into the dust.
Just look at that reach!!
Re: Too Tall Jones vs Bert Cooper
Bol was one of the most anemic Basketball players in the History of the game... Chamberlain sometimes outrebounded whole teams on the boards... He scored 100 points in a game -- with the opposing team pounding him and hanging all over him -- forcing him to sink dozens of foul shots.
Bol never dreamed he could do anything like that... He wasn't that imaginative that he ever had thoughts of greatness.

Re: Too Tall Jones vs Bert Cooper
Bol once killed a wild tiger in Africa......Wilt never EVER did that. Not even once.
Sure...he SAID he was going to do it....he talked about it, a lot....but the tiger got tired of waiting for Wilt to jump....and after it was pretty clear Wilt was just posturing, the tiger moved on.
