There will be no Kova-Ward rematch

"I've got to make some tough decisions over the next couple of months. Boxing isn't a sport to play with. I've obviously been doing this for a long time and it just has to make sense. I think just collectively getting my team's opinion and spend my time praying and talking to my wife. We'll make the right decision."
The coWard will keep the belts gifted to him.

You’ve misrepresented the information detailed in the article you quoted. Andre Ward simply said that he was unsure if he will continue fighting, with the operative word being “unsure”.

If he doesn't rematch Kovalev then there's no other significant fights at 175. Stevenson won't fight him. Anyone else will be considered Duck of the Century considering the rematch is in his contract. Either that or he has to retire. And I say that as someone who likes Ward.

That would be another cowardly Lennox Lewis move... A flagrant robbery and no rematch... However, I think Ward could be training in secret and playing mental games... He want's Kovalev to get frustrated... He wants him to relax and get out of shape -- but it's not going to happen.

Kovalev wasn't frustrated enough in their first fight and allowed Ward to avoid stoppage. I would love to see him more frustrated.

Ward is not going to be knocked out by anybody in his career.. He's a brilliant boxer.. but Kovalev is a better boxer who beat him -- but if he's frustrated it's not going to make him a better boxer or puncher... This is a game where you need a cool head -- and he generally has one.

Reeks of negotiation tactic for more money. I can't imagine someone even as lame as Ward would take that route to retirement. His "legacy" would be trashed and flushed down the drain.

Honestly the first fight sucked. The next will be worse.
I'm happy there won't be a rematch. I can watch paint dry for more entertainment

There will be a rematch... This is Ward pulling mind games -- to get paid even more than 5-million this time, regardless how bad the last PPV did.

Who is “slappin’ soggy”? If it’s Andre Ward, then I’ve seen loads of post-Kovalev videos of his unblemished facial features.

I think the most telling point in the article was the last sentence:
"We'll make the right decision."

Sounds to me that Ward is going to sit back and wait to see how much various Promoters offer him for the rematch.
I'm guessing that if the money doesn't (at least) exceed his first salary of $5 million-plus then we can forget about even talking about him anymore.
My best guess is that he'll be looking for a cool $10 mill before they get him at the negotiating table.

Personally, I think Ward is done with the sport. He never struck me as the type of competitor with the "warrior spirit" like a Kessler or a Froch or Golovkin - you know someone who actually enjoys the sport and what they do.

I do think that we can all agree that - in terms of the sport - there's no point in Ward taking any other bouts - nothing other than the Kovalev rematch makes sporting or economic sense.

..I believe it's entirely up to him...he should NOT be surprised though if this unfinished business will haunt him for the rest of his life and affect what is known as legacy..

Looks like Ward is laying the foundation for the Kovalev rematch duck :TU:

After ward clearly lost the fight to Kovalev and got the belt from corrupted judges-you can call this 'misinterpretation', but it is rather your misunderstanding of the boxing. When knocked-out ward says "he needs to pray and that he is unsure if he wants to be beaten again by Kovalev" - you can try to distort the essence of ward's escape and call him brave puncher instead.

I'm a big Ward fan.....but if his next fight isn't against Kovalev or Stevenson, he deserves to be razzed about it.

When a boxer starts thinking out loud about retirement then they are retired. Lampley has always said this and he's been right on the money in almost all cases.

Ward is done. Let's all move on and be done with it already and think about other fights and boxers. If Ward was going to fight again and give Kovalev his rematch then they wouldn't be wasting time with this non promoting BS. They would be building up the fight right now instead throwing doubt at it. It's over.

Kovalev/Adonis is the fight to make now at LH

sounds reasonable. shame on ward if
he not only denies kova the rematch
but can't stop talking BS about him not
accepting the loss.

so tired of these talking heads.

Ward knows now that he can't outbox Kovalev. Kovalev is the better long distance boxer. Ward was having real trouble getting trough those straight punches. Kovalev is also good at wrestling. That nullifies most of Wards inside game and headbutting.

Ward knows he cannot look good against Kovalev and there is real chance of getting knocked out in the early rounds. Another close on points win will not do any good for Wards legacy and there would probably be another outcry of robbery if the fight is close one.

If Ward would be confident that he could get more clear victory the next time he would already have signed the date for the rematch. Ward ducking the rematch means he knows there is nothing to exploit in Kovalevs fight style :geek:

My guess is there will be no rematch
