Roy Jones Says Today's Fighters Focused on Talk, Not Taking Risks

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

According to former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr., today's fighters are not taking enough risks and doing too much talking.

Jones, who captured belts at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight, recalled when he took a huge risk by moving from the light heavyweight limit of 175-pounds to challenge John Ruiz for the WBA heavyweight belt in 2003. Jones won a twelve round unanimous decision.

"For example, Julio Cesar Chávez fought with everyone. We knew we could win or lose. It's about doing it for the fans. Today's superstars speak for the sake of speaking.," Jones told Erika Montoya.

Jones feels too many boxers are trying to emulate former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., who retired from the sport in September 2015. He earned a reported $300 million for his mega-fight with Manny Pacquiao in May 2015, and he walked away undefeated with a 49-0 record.

"He changed the way we looks at boxing and it's hard not to want to follow him because he made more money than anyone else. If someone tries do what Floyd did, it will not work. If we have a great athlete, we want to see him challenged... at least by facing the very best and not just any guy," Jones said.

"Boxing is the worst sport to lose at, because if you lose then they say that you are no longer good at doing this and that's not the case. In the UFC, guys lose and nothing happens... what they do is put them right back in a good fight. Floyd, he made a lot of money because he proved that he couldn't be figured out. He is one of the most intelligent fighters that came around the sport."

At the peak of his powers, Roy Jones Jr. refused to leave American shores to engage in bouts against top opponents.

Therefore, in my eyes, his comments seem a tad hypocritical.

For me...Floyd could be figured out.. Did Mosley tag Floyd really good??? Yeah!!! Did Judah tag Floyd up in the early rounds??? Yeah!!! Were they really great boxers??? NOPE!! Spence lit Floyd up when Floyd was still an active fighter.. With his brutal southpaw style, for my money he beats a peak Floyd.. It's one thing to be undefeated in 5 divisions and 26 World Title Fights, where the guys he fought -- some weren't bad -- but they weren't real good.

If Floyd ever fought anybody with the ability of Lomachenko, Joshua, Usyk, Crawford, Kovalev, Ward, or Spence, I wouldn't say that... The best Floyd fought was a lame Pacquiao -- who couldn't throw his right because of a badly torn rotator cuff... Pac was knocked out 3 times anyway and I don't believe he was an outstanding boxer-puncher because he hasn't score a KO in many, many years.. Floyd was one of the best boxers in the history of the sport -- but it's a shame he never fought anybody who was super good..

I've often thought the same thing about Ray Robinson -- although Robinson lost a ton of fights and Floyd never lost a single fight... If I try to find a single great boxer-puncher among all of Robinson's opponents??? Frankly I don't see any... Obviously Moore and Burley were around at points of SRR's career.

I agree with RJJ about fighters and talking. I am also very condemning of fake boxing fans who are truly fans of big talk on twitter, not on big actions in the ring. These fake boxing fans are always super critical of respectable matchmaking and fighters who have actually fought good opponents. When we see a great fight like Ward - Kovalev, or just an important fight like Fury - Wlad, these fake fans will try to tear down one or both of the fighters involved. But when a fighter avoids fighting anyone good, and just talks a big game on twitter, these fake fans worship said bigmouth.

Reward the fighters who fight, win or lose. Not the bigmouths who don't fight. Actions in the ring are the only part of boxing that is actual boxing.

Coming from the guy who refused to leave America and ducked any good European boxer. Notably Michaelczewski and Collins.
