Pacquiao vs. Horn: Suncorp Stadium Reserved For April 22

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Jeff Horn believes the time is right to fight the legendary Manny Pacquiao as negotiations over their proposed blockbuster bout ramp up.

Horn's promoters Duco Events are seeking to lock in what would be the biggest fight in Australian boxing history by the end of the month, with director Dean Lonergan hoping to sign a conditional agreement with powerful Top Rank CEO Bob Arum when they meet in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Horn's hometown of Brisbane is the preferred host city and Suncorp Stadium has already been booked for Sunday, April 23, which would facilitate a primetime Saturday night TV audience back in the US on Saturday, April 22.

But with a multi-million dollar purse needing to be raised, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide will all be invited to bid in a competitive tender process.

There was initially talk that Horn (16-0-1) would have to get through either Jessie Vargas or Timothy Bradley Jr. - two other welterweights in the Top Rank stable - before his chance against the 38-year-old Pacquiao (59-6-2) would arrive, but those plans appear to have been shelved.

Horn is still yet to beat a recognised top-tier opponent - his biggest scalp so far is South African Ali Funeka, who he stopped in the sixth round of their clash in Auckland last month.

Horn's trainer Glenn Rushton sees the fight as a "win-win". "If he loses, it's just business as usual for Manny Pacquiao. But I don't believe he will lose - Jeff is like a younger, stronger Pacquiao."

And people heavily criticized Berto as an opponent for Mayweather? This fight is Pacquiao's 4th "Berto" out of the last 6 fights.

Got to wonder if they could generate enough money if it was held at Suncorp though? I know it can hold about 50,000. But could the fight pull a big enough crowd there?

I think either Melbourne or Sydney hosting it would be more profitable.

I don't think it would be a problem filling Suncorp. The place has a fantastic atmosphere too

Maybe this is old news, but I was shocked to see Ricky Burns being added to the possible opponents for Pacquiao.

Arum says Manny Pacquiao is happy to fight Jeff Horn

Bob Arum has spoken to Manny Pacquiao and discussed the possibility of fighting Jeff Horn. He says Pacquiao was excited by the fight and called it a “good challenge.’’

“Manny has seen some of Jeff Horn’s previous fights, we’ve shown him tapes,’’ said Arum.

“Manny thinks Jeff is a very live fighter — in the sense he’s a come-ahead guy and he says it will be a tremendous fight and a good challenge for him. Manny is on board for this fight.’’

“We are very excited about this fight."

“Jeff is a very good fighter. I don’t know if he beats Manny Pacquiao but he’ll give him a tremendous fight.’’

Arum said his “goal’’ is to “make this fight with Jeff Horn in Australia” and also said there was a “tremendous chance’’ the contest will take place in Brisbane, Australia.

“I’ve cleared it with Manny and I’ve cleared it with his people. He’s all set and ready to go if they can raise the money in Australia,’’ Arum said.

“Manny would love the opportunity to fight in Australia. A lot of people from the Philippines would come over to watch and a lot of Filipinos in Australia would be at the stadium".

I cannot believe that Pacquiao VS Horn is actually picking up steam. Horn is a nobody and does not deserve to fight Pacquiao. I literally lose all respect for PAC if he takes this fight.

How can you lose all respect for a guy who has fought for 22 years and won something like 11 world titles, based on the choice of one opponent at the end of his career? That is absolutely ridiculous.

If he chooses to compete then he must fight a credible opponent. Bottom line

That might be your bottom line and you are entitled to it :TU:

But after 22 years and something like 11 world titles I'm prepared to cut a champion like Manny a bit of slack :OhYes:

I'm curious, what did you say when Floyd picked Berto as an opponent? About 99% of the people here had a huge problem with it. Pacquiao has had several poor opponents in his last several fights, not just this one. Rios, Algieri, Vargas are not what I would call top tier competition. A 3rd fight with Bradley was even more painful to watch.

The plan appears to be for a bit of a world tour for Manny Pacquiao before he hangs the gloves up.

If Manny wants to travel and ease back a bit in the process he won't get any grief from me. If anyone has paid their dues and earned the right to go out on their own terms it is Manny.
