Roach: Crawford wanted $7M for Pacquiao fight
Trainer Freddie Roach says that he was told a week ago by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum that Terence Crawford was the possible opponent for Manny Pacquiao’s next fight. However, Roach then said he heard that the 29-year-old Crawford’s asking price was $7 million for the Pacquiao fight.
Roach thinks that it might have been too much, because Arum is now talking about wanting to match Pacquiao against unbeaten #2 WBO Jeff Horn (16-0-1, 11 KOs) in April.
Roach said this to RingTV.com about Arum speaking to him about Crawford being the next opponent for Pacquiao:
“Arum told me last week it was Terence Crawford [for Pacquiao’s fight in April], Crawford asked for $7 million. So maybe that’s too expensive,” said Roach.

Roach insinuating it was Crawford that was pricing himself out, while breathing a sigh of relief.
Re: Roach: Crawford wanted $7M for Pacquiao fight
Arum previously claimed that Horn would have to at least fight Vargas before getting to Pacquiao.
Re: Roach: Crawford wanted $7M for Pacquiao fight
It's too bad they can't make the Lo mo fight at 135. Pac himself said he can make it no problem. Probably a 7 or 8 lb cut.
Re: Roach: Crawford wanted $7M for Pacquiao fight
It's almost 3 times less than what Pac wants for the fight, and considering Crawford is more relevant in the sport right now than Pacquiao I'd say that's being generous on Crawford's part.

Pac's drawing power is over 3x greater though.

Danny Garcia and Adrien Broner both got heavily abused and criticised by this forum for rejecting a $4m offer to face Pacquiao, but no one is bothered about Crawford asking for $7m!

Re: Roach: Crawford wanted $7M for Pacquiao fight
Crawford is better than Garcia and Broner.Enlightened-One wrote:Danny Garcia and Adrien Broner both got heavily abused and criticised by this forum for rejecting a $4m offer to face Pacquiao, but no one is bothered about Crawford asking for $7m!

Slightly better than Garcia, easily better than Broner.
Re: Roach: Crawford wanted $7M for Pacquiao fight
I think he's significantly better than both, and would beat both comfortably.Badhusker wrote:Slightly better than Garcia, easily better than Broner.

Talent doesn't always translate to commercial popularity or revenue generating ability.gilgamesh wrote:Crawford is better than Garcia and Broner.Enlightened-One wrote:Danny Garcia and Adrien Broner both got heavily abused and criticised by this forum for rejecting a $4m offer to face Pacquiao, but no one is bothered about Crawford asking for $7m!

That's true, but it seems to me that at the moment Crawford is a bigger draw than Garcia or Broner are. He's certainly not a bigger draw than Pacquiao though.Enlightened-One wrote:Talent doesn't always translate to commercial popularity or revenue generating ability.gilgamesh wrote:Crawford is better than Garcia and Broner.Enlightened-One wrote:Danny Garcia and Adrien Broner both got heavily abused and criticised by this forum for rejecting a $4m offer to face Pacquiao, but no one is bothered about Crawford asking for $7m!

I don't think he is a bigger draw outside of Omaha.gilgamesh wrote:That's true, but it seems to me that at the moment Crawford is a bigger draw than Garcia or Broner are. I'm not so sure that Crawford is a commercially bigger name than Broner and Garcia, but it's not a subject matter that I'm motivated enough to argue about.gilgamesh wrote:That's true, but it seems to me that at the moment Crawford is a bigger draw than Garcia or Broner are. Re: Roach: Crawford wanted $7M for Pacquiao fight
Garcia would be the bigger draw in NYC. I figure Crawford would be the bigger draw in a neutral place like Las Vegas. Can't say for sure, but I think so.boxing_rocks wrote:I don't think he is a bigger draw outside of Omaha.gilgamesh wrote:That's true, but it seems to me that at the moment Crawford is a bigger draw than Garcia or Broner are. Re: Roach: Crawford wanted $7M for Pacquiao fight
I don't think that price is unreasonable at all. Crawford is a bigger draw than Vargas and probably Bradley as well (Especially at this stage in Bradley's career).
Again, a Pac VS Crawford PPV would generate a lot of revenue. I think his purse plus the PPV revenue should cover the 7 million.
Also, I wouldn't put too much stock into what Roach says. He has a bad habit of talking trash lol.

You say that in a tone that suggests that you're the voice of authority on this matter, so can I assume that you can provide compelling and irrefutable evidence that supports your claims?TooEasy12 wrote:I don't think that price is unreasonable at all. I'm not being argumentative, it's just that I'm curious about how you've drawn such conclusions.

Re: Roach: Crawford wanted $7M for Pacquiao fight
It's most part only guessing. Yes Crawford much stronger draw than Vargas of course. Than Bradley maybe not. But it's close. Outside of the mainstream Bradley better known than Crawford. The PPV the guy may know. I sure can't talk there. As far as Freddie Roach, I would (put stock in what he says).Enlightened-One wrote:You say that in a tone that suggests that you're the voice of authority on this matter, so can I assume that you can provide compelling and irrefutable evidence that supports your claims?TooEasy12 wrote:I don't think that price is unreasonable at all. Re: Roach: Crawford wanted $7M for Pacquiao fight
Hopefully you have all read or heard that it was a big lie by either Roach or Arum. Both are proven liars so your guess is as good as mine as far as who is lying this time.
Re: Roach: Crawford wanted $7M for Pacquiao fight
What happened to percentages of the money earned?
$20m for Pac and $7m for Crawford.
If the fight does $20m the 2 get a free pass and we spend the next year arguing about who ducked who.
Set a percentage, promote the fight right, get it on and what you "deserve" to be paid will be dictated by what you can draw

Fighters have very little influence on the commercial success of the fight cards that they’re involved in, which is why many boxers insist on guaranteed paydays instead of percentages.davie wrote:What happened to percentages of the money earned?

Fighters deserve to be paid their economic worth, depending on their level of popularity and revenue generating ability… and fight fans have no right to dictate how much they should be paid, because it was only the blood, sweat and tears of the pugilists themselves that earned their position at the very pinnacle of the sport.

This could be the equivalent of Floyd vs DeLaHoya.
The passing of the torch so to speak.
If I was Crawford and was as confident as I think he is that he will win.
I'd take the fight and bet on my future ppv market.
Crawford could be THE STAR if he wins. The future earning potential of a win would be worth the gamble
