Ricky don't lose that number - Lazcano waits for the call..
Negotiations underway for Lazcano to take on champion

Now, all Juan Lazcano can do is sit by the phone. And wait.
The El Paso boxer, hoping to land his second world title shot against undisputed junior welterweight champ Ricky Hatton on May 13 in Mashantucket, Conn., could get confirmation as early as this week.
"They made us an offer, we countered, and so we're waiting for that to come back," said Eric Gomez, matchmaker for Lazcano's promoter, Golden Boy Promotions. "It's in negotiations right now. But that's the fight we're shooting for. That's the fight Juan wants."
Hatton also is considering a fight against former WBA junior welterweight champ Vivian Harris.
Lazcano (36-3-1, 27 knockouts) put himself in a good position on Feb. 24, when he won a unanimous 10-round decision against Ghana's Ben Tackie at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. He has gone 3-0 (2 KOs) since losing a 12-round decision to Jose Luis Castillo for the vacant WBC lightweight title on June 5, 2004, also in Las Vegas.
In "Hitman" Hatton, 40-0 (30 KOs), Lazcano would be fighting one of the top 10 pound-for-pound boxers in the world. The fight would be internationally televised on HBO's world championship boxing from the Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket. It also would mark Hatton's American debut.
The Englishman won the title last June 5, when he upset Australia's Kostya Tszyu by 11th-round TKO in his native Manchester. He defended it in November, knocking out Carlos Maussa to add the IBF crown to his belt collection.
The ball now appears to be in the Hatton camp's court.
"We can make the deal tomorrow morning, or it can drag on for a couple of weeks," Gomez said. "We're waiting to hear a word."
It would be Lazcano's first real test at junior welterweight. He has campaigned as a lightweight through most of his career.
If not Hatton, Lazcano could fight Colombian Ricardo Torres.

No wonder he's hoping it's Hatton - that's a helluva bad 2nd prize to get!

I knew this would happen. Lazcano seems like the obvious choice to me. Just credible and beatable enough to be the perfect stop-gap opponent. Harris is too much of a risk, Diaz has another fight now and Baldomir is too expensive. Obviously Ben Rabah is the absolute last choice, so it has to be Lazcano.
Lazcano is much more dangerous than Harris IMO.
Lazcano was possibly a tad overated when he was a prospect, but he scored a KO win over Stevie Johnston (who looked pretty decent in his comeback) and I thought could have beaten Castillo put choked a little. Castillo was very weary of him and it wasn't the performance we have come to expect from the warrior.

I'm suprised Lazcano is ready to fight Hatton or Torres, especially Torres. I'd pick both Hatton and Torres over Lazcano as of right now. I think Lazcano vs Torres is a bad match up for Lazcano, he has little to gain and a lot to lose here, a fight with Hatton would make more sense for both Hatton and Lazcano in my opinion. The thing about Torres is that he's a bit of a wild card much like Cotto to me. We don't know exactly how good he is but he sure could punch.

Yes it's a lousy match, Hatton is P4P one of the top boys and here he is, looking for a lightweight defence. Piss poor match - it seems Team Hatton haven't got a clue when it comes to keeping the momentum going in Ricky's career.
Take on Torres instead - that's a fight that'd make the world sit up and take notice.
Enough of the B level fights already.

Torres took the Cotto fight on very short notice, so no wonder body shots caught up with him.hitman_hatton1 wrote:torres couldn't handle it to the body.MightyWarrior wrote:Yes

Much too dangerous for the Hatton camp to take on, you can bank on that.

Well as you all know I've been labelled a Hatton hater but I think this is a good match up
I've never seen Lazcano fight but he supposedly should have got the better of Castillo, stopped Stevie Johnson and is a big lightweight and just dominated Tackie (albeit an oldd 1). Goto be Rickys second hardest fight to date on paper.
I'd be suprised if they don't get rid of the mandatory and easy fight in Rabah instead of taking the harder hungry option that would be Lazcano

Lazcano stopped an old S Johnston and was outboxed and carved up by Castillo. what ppl mean is he was favored to beat CastilloPhenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Well as you all know I've been labelled a Hatton hater but I think this is a good match up

Lazcano couldn't manage a Hatton or Tszyu domination of Tackie. more like one of those fairly exciting espn-level fightsjamesmcdonnell wrote:I'm not going to get too excited about him dominating Tackie....
seems none of the guys on Hatton's list are to get really hyped about, unless Rabah turns out to be something. Even Harris, I felt he was a fake champ before the Maussa loss. I remember Viivan getting a gift decision in Oktay Urkal's backyard before winning a rematch by KO.
I think Hatton wants something that looks competitive on paper, but not too demanding for his world title debut in America.
I see your point but Torres hasn't even proved he's a B level fighter yet! Torres needs a win before getting back in the mix IMO, he hasn't beaten anyone of note.MightyWarrior wrote:Yes it's a lousy match, Hatton is P4P one of the top boys and here he is, looking for a lightweight defence. He is active that is good but this certainly isn't the best match up. I would imagin he will be wanting to line the next one up as a big one purly from a business point of view, in the states there isn't the guarented 30,000 adoring city fans he got used to in manchester and so he will need to mix it up a bit. All champs take the odd easy defence and ricky Hatton is only 27 and should have about 6 years in him if he plays his cards right, however if he goes in against Mayweather Corralis, harris, Witter and Cotto he leaves himself with less options and potencialy in quite a bad state after too many hard fights is succession. I would like to see him take this one then look at one of the big boys and then maybe Gatti who carries a good name on paper but not much threat.
I think Lazcano has done as much as Witter and Harris (recently) to warrant a shot at Hatton.
I know he has spent the most part of his career at Lightweight but look at his wins on his resume.
Johnston, Leija, Tackie, Burton, Antonio Diaz, Juan Molina, Julian Wheeler, Dorin Spivey (a very underated fighter) and ran Castillo fairly close. I took further examination of his career and he seems to have retired alot of decentish fighters also such as Danny Rios, Julio Alvarez and Molina.
