Groves vs. Chudinov WBA Title Clash on February 25 in London?
According to Umar Kremlev, manager of Fedor Chudinov (14-1, 10 KOs), they are close to a deal to fight George Groves (25-3, 18 KOs) for the vacant WBA super middleweight title on February 25th in the UK.
The World Boxing Association had ordered Chudinov and Groves to fight reach other for the vacant belt and gave them until January 5th to reach a deal before a purse bid was ordered. Kremlev says they reached an agreement on the terms with Sauerland Event, who handle Groves, without the necessity of a purse bid.

Bit risky to put him on as the 'A' side for a fight in this country. He's a solid blue corner fighter or chief support but i don't think he's a headline act in this country.
Re: Groves vs. Chudinov WBA Title Clash on February 25 in London?
Groves would probably pull in enough for a small venue like Wembley arena at the moment. He still has lots of support from the froch fights.freddydoesdallas wrote:Bit risky to put him on as the 'A' side for a fight in this country. If they get a half decent undercard on a decent channel could make it very good evening of boxing.

I don't see any reason why not. He's a known name in this country and been in big fights.
Chudinov has held the title before and Groves is a 3 times challenger. I don't see how thos couldn't headline a show on normal Sky

I do get all of your comments but i still don't see Groves as having a particularly strong fanbase. When he's an opponent, he brings value but i don't think he sells the tickets or people care too much about him being the 70:30 favourite in a fight like some others can get away with.
He's a social media fighter like i've mentioned in another thread, he'll have a load of people following him on twitter, instagram or whatever he might do ( i think he left twitter after Froch II) but they are casual 'likes' for free rather than actual paid support.
If he was a big draw, the major promoters over here would be snapping him up

I think that sums it up. He has a higher profile than most out there but i think he lacks a certain something to turn that into sales or interest. I don't know why, he seems a decent bloke who's a very good boxer but something just doesn't seem to click for himginty wrote:Strange thing to say , groves has a higher profile than most world champions here .freddydoesdallas wrote:Bit risky to put him on as the 'A' side for a fight in this country. This isn't just your average 70/30 bout, there is a (irrelevant) world title on the line.freddydoesdallas wrote:I do get all of your comments but i still don't see Groves as having a particularly strong fanbase. It will be sold as Groves having a real chance of winning a title and the fans will snap it up.
As other have said, he's as recognisable a name as any non world champion in the country

He could well do. I'm no expert on what he does but it just seems strange that he never is the headline act for a big show and when he has been, it's been in a small venue.ginty wrote:Maybe, I'm not so sure I think if you take out the heavy weights I think groves will sell as many tickets as any British boxer myselffreddydoesdallas wrote:I think that sums it up. It might be to do with promoters not thinking he gives the commitment to them for promotion or something else but there must be a reason that it's never the 'George Groves Show'

Wembley Arena is not exactly a small venue though is it.freddydoesdallas wrote:He could well do. Re: Groves vs. Chudinov WBA Title Clash on February 25 in London?
I know, the 70:30 bit was more about him generally. To me, and i maybe wrong, there has been more of a buzz for Frampton, Burns, Flanagan, Crolla, BJS, Callum Smith and so on than there has about anything where George Groves has been the 'A' side.davie wrote:This isn't just your average 70/30 bout, there is a (irrelevant) world title on the line.freddydoesdallas wrote:I do get all of your comments but i still don't see Groves as having a particularly strong fanbase. He is definitely a recognisable name, i just don't think it seems to translate to ticket selling. He beefs up a PPV featuring Joshua and adds a bit of value which we would probably all agree on but would the same people be interested in going to watch him in that fight as a headline fight?
I think it's an interesting little issue for him. I'm sure he gets paid well to do what he does but he just seems to be a high profile fighter that people like and will watch but haven't bought into him.

Re: Groves vs. Chudinov WBA Title Clash on February 25 in London?
It's not but was it sold out? I genuinely have no idea. I could be completely wrong on this whole thing with Groves but it seems to be that way with a lot of people i know who like the big boxing occasion. They all know Groves, quite a few saw him (getting ko'd in front of 80k) at Wembley and will always think he's an added bonus on a ppv card but they'd never pay to go and see him.ste1983 wrote:Wembley Arena is not exactly a small venue though is it.freddydoesdallas wrote:He could well do. Good for groves to be honest.
Re: Groves vs. Chudinov WBA Title Clash on February 25 in London?
Isn't this for the vacant super belt? So the WBA No1 belt. And Paul smith is rumored to be fighting zeuge for the regular (irrelevant) belt?davie wrote:This isn't just your average 70/30 bout, there is a (irrelevant) world title on the line.freddydoesdallas wrote:I do get all of your comments but i still don't see Groves as having a particularly strong fanbase. Yeah think thats right.....for my money all WBA belts are irrelevant now while they keep up with this super/regular shit).nitro5912 wrote:Isn't this for the vacant super belt? So the WBA No1 belt. I'm not sure. I'd have thought it was for the regular title myself.nitro5912 wrote:Isn't this for the vacant super belt? So the WBA No1 belt. If it is for the genuine WBA strap all the more reason it justifies topping it's own bill
Edit - just looked at the OP, the press release states:
"vacant WBA super middleweight title on February 25th "
The "super" is in relation to the weight class, not the stature of the title. Don't you just wish the WBA would fvck off with all this super sh1t

Zeuge is the regular and super was held by Sturm so I think it is for the genuine belt

Chudinov lost it to Sturm who has since been caught being a big durty cheetin whoor. Hence the super title being on the line
I just found it odd 2 non titlists being parachuted in for the vacant title when it was the sooper dooper one.
The WBA, you just never can suss that mob out

Could be a fairly good fight this. Especially if Chudinov gets back to what he was when he beat Buglioni.Ruthless-RKO wrote:Groves vs. Chudinov for the vacant WBA super middleweight title.
