I have written a book which is now out on kindle for 99p, it is about a fat, indolent, long term unemployed layabout and his journey into becoming an amateur super heavyweight boxer, it's called Tommy Twice: This Is Your Life and you can read the first four chapters for gratis and for nowt in the look inside section. I think if you are British and a fan of boxing, you'll like it - I hope! Check out the four chapters at least, you should get a laugh or two from there I reckon, and if you give it a try - thanks very much in advance!! :salut:

If you don't have a kindle, then you can buy the paperback (which at 7.99 is a bit more expensive, I don't price the paperback version unfortunately) and though you can't use the 'look inside' feature for the paperback, you can in the kindle version!

Hi Thechump,

I think the main thing is you have an idea for a story, so that's the most important thing is that you have a story written out in your head, I think the best thing to do for now - and this is what I did with my first book (which took a total of four years to write), is write it in the first person - write it as if you were writing a letter to a friend. I find writing in the first person the easiest way to get the story down - what happens with a lot of people is that they get stuck, get writers block or they hit a dead end with plot development (usually because they are a bit too ambitious with it) - so when that happens, just ease off and let the imagination take over. Write what you can and when you can - treat it as a long term project. If you write two pages a week, you will have written a book in two years - and definitely a children's book as they tend to be under 200 pages anyway.

The hardest part is starting, from then - a bit when you can and where you can and it builds up nicely, good luck with it and if I can be of any help, let me know, send me a PM. :TU:

Away man, it's 2 quid for 2 books, they're purchased.
I'm sure they'll be worth a read and if they're shite they'll sit on the kindle unread like the 3000 my mate gave me on a memory stick that I'll never read.

I'll try to give them a read though, but I've got the Jack Johnson and Charlie Burley paperbacks still to read and I'm going to pick up the kindle version of the fearless Harry Greb (as it's a quarter the cost of the actual book (sorry Klompton))

So it might be a wee while till I get to them

Carlos,

1. how long did it take you to smash your second book out?

2. What percentage do you get of the kindle price?

Hi Sklar,

I did the first 12 chapters within a year because a friend of mine sent a writing competition for a novella set in modern, working class Britain but the 'novella' went well over the word limit, so I stopped whilst perfecting White Monkey and getting that out. But when I went back to it - I was in China and had tons of time and the headspace was good and I did the rest of it - a remaining 16 chapters in around three or four months.

What happens with me, I write the book in my head and let it digest for about a year, so when time comes to actually get it down on paper, it's written really, it is just digging it out of the subconciousness - I am not going in blind when writing and rarely get 'writers block' regarding story development, I know how the main parts are going to go and how it's going to end. And once it's written, it's pretty raw but it's pretty precise.

I gave Tommy Twice to Mercman who was my first reader of the completed manuscript and he read it and came back with some superb suggestions that made the book so much better - including the ending! He was a massive help for sure and I was very lucky to have him as my first reader.

The physical writing of a book once you get into a rhythm doesn't take too long. The mental processing of the story is ongoing but it takes me about a year for me to get it down on paper.

The percentage is 35% on kindle books that cost 99p - with the logic being that people will shift loads of they sell it so cheap, not many people are going to give an unknown a chance at 2.99 which would yield a 70% return - which is fair enough, there is a lot of dross out there, a lot of good stuff too but people will give a chance if it costs a quid rather than 2.99.

On paperbacks, it isn't that much.

If you don't have a kindle, then you can buy the paperback (which at 7.99 is a bit more expensive, I don't price the paperback version unfortunately) and though you can't use the 'look inside' feature for the paperback, you can in the kindle version!
Well done I shall give it a read. As a matter of interest how do you market your novels? I published on amazon almost three years ago but never really did any marketing past setting up a Facebook page, I still sell several copies a month (usually Kindle but sometimes paperback) but do feel it deserves a wider audience...
