Groves Degale & Money

Post by Taansend »

I've seen a couple of interviews with James Degale in which he is chuffed because he thinks Groves is miserable about the amount of money he's making fighting for Haymon in the Americas.

I would have thought that Groves has made a decent amount of wedge himself (he once fought in front of 80,000 people at Wembley - can't remember who against though :maybe: ) as well as the fight in Vegas against Jack & various other bouts.

This is not a dig at Degale as I am a fan of his (& Groves). But it just seems a bit strange that he keeps bringing this up.

I actually thought Groves got more than that. Either way, I doubt if he's worrying about Degales purses too much.

DeGale is full of himself, always has been and Groves knows what buttons to push with him.
Whilst being champ and making these millions, DeGale still mentions Groves a whole lot more than Groves mentions DeGale.
Groves isnt short of a few bob i'm sure. Both will be millinaires regardless.
The loss to George must really eat at DeGale...

I think it is clear they have both made a lot of money in boxing, and I suspect the 'big' money fights started for both of them when they fought each other.

The next 18-24 months will be defining for both of them, and I have every expectation they will both be in 'mega' fights.

In a sport where many participants have to hold down full time jobs in order to make a living, I think it is fair to say that both men have made a lot of money, and fair play to them.

This just sounds like a bit of needle, something that Degale is rubbish at. But if it leads to a rematch between the two then I will happily put up with his poor form of trash talk.

Degale genuinely hates Groves. Groves is an arrogant guy himself and you get the feeling he's quite a bit more intelligent than James and knows exactly how to wind him up. He says things that really get into degales head and annoy him. Pretty funny when they have pops at each other but Groves has him beat outside the ring and possibly inside the ring too.

I lost money to a very good friend of mine, who was the first national champion for Dale Youth, on their fight. He was convinced Groves would beat him. I was convinced the other way...

I thought so too. To be fair it could have gone either way but Degale had looked better up to that point.

Both are odious characters.

Groves was better but his popularity has plummeted since his losses.

I don't know what Groves does tickets wise, but for Degale all this "doing it the hard way on the road" - yes, I do actually admire that but lets not kid ourselves that he has not had to do that out of necessity as otherwise he would still be fighting in shopping centres, never mind leisure centres !

I quite like them both.

Groves is definitely an odd kid while Degale reminds me of David Brent but I like the pair of them.
