Jack Johnson vs Jack Dempsey?

Post by Crease »

Did Jack Johnson ever encounter Jack Dempsey in the ring?

I remember being in a boxing forum once and a fella was discussing the unconfirmed reports of the fight.

Anyone know what the crack is?

Im pretty sure this encounter never happened, but there are plenty of folks on this forum that can answer this question better than I. As for a "fantasy matchup", Id take Johnson in a decision, or late late KO, like rnd 35

Johnson would have hammered Dempsey late in the fight.Of course Dempsey had hammers for fists so i wouldnt have ruled out a KO in favor of Dempsey.

This would be a great fight. If it was a 10 or 12 rounder Dempsey by decision. 15 - 45 rounder Johnson by decision bossible late ko

Jack Johnson was still fighting as a competitive fighter when Jack Dempsey was champion---Johnson was to have a match against Luis Firpo, but during an exhibition bout with the "Wild Bull of The Pampas" he dropped Firpo over and over again---so the Firpo camp denied that fight from actually happening.

Johnson asked Dempsey to fight him a few times, but the fight never did come into fruitation---even though I think even an old Jack Johnson would have given Dempsey trouble.

Dempsey by KO late. He was much faster than most of the guys JJ fought. Johnson's clinching tactics would be difficult against JD, like trying to contain a squirming, clawing wildcat. He would give Dempsey a hard time with his cutting counterpunches, but sooner or later he's gonna start getting tagged. He was not the fleet-footed runner that Tunney was, so I don't think his footwork could get him out of the way.

I pick Johnson, as well. I think he had the defensive skills to hold Dempsey off. The longer the fight went, the better Johnson's chances would have become.

I dunno....JJ would have to be blocking A LOT of punches here. A lot more(and a lot harder and faster) than he's used to. could he do it for 15 rounds?? I don't think so personally.
