The ring announcer announced Humphries as a recent victor over the Grim Reaper, which would lead one to believe he had just gotten out of the hospital. I do know he passed away less than a year after this bout. I found it funny that the announcer had to instruct Humphries on how to use the microphone, something we take for granted today. This guy made his bones announcing with one of those big paper or plastic megaphones that they used back in the day. Very historic when you look at all the nuances involved.

Joe Humpries was born in 1872 so he didnt actually annouce any of John L. Sullivan's fights.
However he did announce Sullivan at the Jess Willard vrs Frank Moran fight at Madison Square Garden March.25.1916.
"Pree-senting John L. Sullivan !"
the crowd of 12,000 roared.
and when John L. Sullivan came into the ring and he then presented him with the belt that Sullivan had won years ago by defeating Charlie Mitchell
( which must have became sepearated from him years ealier)

Billy Jordan was more significant as a ring announcer than Joe Humphries.
