Big Joe Calzaghe's next Move?

Joe Calzaghe proved that he was the far better fighter then Jeff Lacy last week. Joe's on top of the world, but what are his next moves?

1. Attempting another Unification contest.
2. Stepping up a weight....
3. Retirement....

1. This would be (In my opinion) his best move, he could either fight,
WBC champion Markus Beyer (HIS BEST MOVE) or WBA champion Mikkel Kessler. Either way, I can see Calzaghe putting both of these fighters away.

2. This would mean he would either fight Antonio Tarver or Roy Jone Junior, I believe these would both be bad moves, cause Clazgahe should stay in his own division.

3. Yes, I'm being seriuos, he shouldn't undermine himself trying to beat everyone then one day find that he's too old and he's lost all his titles to an average dick.

The unofficial Joe Calzaghes next opponent list!

1 - Mikkel Kessler: A fight that many people want to see apparently. Never seen Kessler fight personally but from what I've been told he is the only fighter at Super Middleweight who could give Calzaghe a threat. Been told that he has a killer jab and general all round good boxing skills.

What can he gain?: The WBA Super Middleweight title and the right to proclaim himself undisputed #1 of the Super Middleweight division

2 - Markus Beyer: A fight that Calzaghe would be expected to win. Beyer seems reluctant to come out of Germany though and Calzaghe is reluctant to leave the UK.

What can he gain?: The WBC Super Middleweight title and one step closer to unifying the division.

3 - Carl Froch: An 18-0 prospect with a big mouth and a big punch who has called out Calzaghe many times over the past couple of years. Froch has proven himself a tad limited in his recent fights and would be an easy fight for Joe with decent British audience interest. Froch must first get by Brian Magee if this fight is to be made which is by no means a foregone conclusion and even then Calzaghe would probably have bigger things in mind.

What can he gain?: Shutting Froch up and settling a grudge match.

4 - Bernard Hopkins: Has a fight with Tarver scheduled at Light Heavy so him facing Joe at Super Middle is conceivable. He likes to fight only 1 minute of every round and is a good counter puncher. Seems to finally be on the slide but would only be an attractive match if he picks up the win against Tarver. Joe could beat him just on work rate at this stage.

What can he gain?: A win over a former # 1 P4P fighter that will look great on his record when people reflect back over his career.

5 - Jermain Taylor: With 2 back to back wins over the former #1 in Hopkins this would probably be the most attractive fight in terms of establishing a lasting legacy. If Taylor gets a win in his upcoming fight fight with Winky Wright then this is the top fight that Calzaghe could make and a win over Taylor would probably put him #1 in the P4P list.

What can he gain?: Another defining fight and potentially a #1 spot on the P4P list.

6 - Arthur Abraham: Had a great 2005 by being one of the most active fighters around and fighting 5 times within the year and picking up excellent victories over Howard Eastman and Kingsley Ikeke, he also picked up the IBF version of the Middleweight title. Would be an exciting fight while it lasted.

What can he gain?: Nothing really except a live opponent to defend against and a potentially mouth watering fight.

7 - Roy Jones Jr: Everyone seems to want to beat up on poor old Roy these days just because they can. Calzaghe has said that he'd want this fight but it is probably the worst fight that he could make as Jones has nothing left and is nowhere near the fighter he once was.

What can he gain?: An easy fight against a washed up big name and former #1 P4P that will probably attract a big audience no matter how bad Jones has detiorated.

8 - Clinton Woods: Would be a fantastic all British showdown that with a decent undercard could probably sell out any venue in the UK. Woods has improved greatly in recent times and it would be a pretty good match up but any time the topic of this fight has been brought up Woods hasn't seemed interested. Woods says Calzaghe should fight at the weight and win some eliminators before he gets a shot at Woods.

What can he gain?: The IBF Light Heavyweight belt to make him a 2 weight champion and a sell out attendence with big ITV viewing figures.

9 - Zsolt Erdei: Nothing much to gain by fighting Erdei except a WBO belt. Haven't seen Erdei fight but his record suggests that he has nicked a couple of close decisions in the last couple of years. Could be a good introduction fight to Light Heavy.

What can he gain?: The WBO Light Heavyweight belt.

10 - Tomasz Adamek: Has had a couple of good wins recently and sports an unbeaten record. Probably a fight with little interest to Joe as he would be a high risk.

What can he gain?: The WBC Light Heavyweight belt and 2 weight world champion bragging rights.

11 - Glen Johnson: A fight that was made in the past until Joe pulled out with a back injury and Johnson went on to beat up on Roy Jones. Johnson is of bigger name value now than at the time the fight was first made. Would probably be an exciting fight but you'd favour Calzaghe and he probably wouldn't get a lot of credit for beating Johnson at this stage.

What can he gain?: A victory over one of the top guys at Light Heavyweight and a sellable fight.

12 - Antonio Tarver: The top man at Light Heavyweight. This would be another career defining fight for Joe and would make him the man at Light Heavy if he won. If Tarver picks up a win against Hopkins then this becomes a very appetising fight for Joe and one that he should make to ensure his legacy and a fight that Joe could win.

What he can gain?: A higher P4P rating, bragging rights of being the man at light heavy and another good name on his record.

13 - Winky Wright: Only a fight he should make if Wright beats Taylor. Wright is a P4P fighter with a lot of good names on his record and would look really good on Joes record if he could pull off a win, would be a tough one though.

What can he gain?: Another career defining fight, higher P4P status and a big audience.

There is the 13 fights that could be made. Personally I'd like to see him go the route of Wright/Taylor winner, Clinton Woods, Hopkins/Tarver winner. I think those 3 fights if he was succesful would ensure his place in history.

Calzaghe is in a different league to em all.

None of em have boxed as well as he has. The others have had there asses kissed by the like of Tom Hauser and Larry Merchant who knew fornicate all about boxing. fornicate em Joe is THE best.

not necessarily. Tarver still has size and a very good defense, though I doubt he could cope with the pace. I also feel that Joe will be stronger at light heavy.

Kessler is young, sharp and very skilled. I know all his fights look just about the same, i.e. dominant jabbing, but Joe is nearly 34 and would encounter a lot of diffeent problems. I wish to fornicate someone would make this fight.

Taylor would be boy against the man, even if he gets by Wright, and if Lou DiB wouldn't put Quartey in with Karmazin he won't put Taylor, really a s/m anyway, in with Calzaghe.

Don't know if there's a fighter alive right now who could pull in 80,000, last person I can think of who pulled in those sort of numbers was JC Chavez. Joe is popular with welsh fans now after that contest, but 80,000, think that's a bit unlikely.

there was a plan to do this, when Warren wanted to put Hatton (fresh from beating Tszyu), Calzaghe and another title fight on. but i think the idea was scrapped as overambitious even before Ricky left.

if it ever happened, the visitors would be shitting themselves!

I doubt that they would be looking for 80,000 capacity for this sort of event - for concerts and stuff they close off certain sections at the Millennium and the capacity is reduced from the rugby capacity. They've put in a new arena type system recently and that allows for an arena type capacity of around 45,000 and that might be a realistic number given all the Joe publicity around right now. That would still make it a pretty damn rich live gate. Interestingly he's planning to lead out the team at the rugby international this weekend - good PR.

I think this will most likely be a bit of a cash-in fight against a SM challenger - cant see any of the superfights being made in that timescale especially as peaktime viewing uk time wont allow for US ppv.

Im neither bias one way or the other, I doubt however that Hatton is going to make that much more over the pond through FA than he would had he stayed with FW (and insisted on fighting over the pond).
Hattons next fight is looking to be against the likes of N'dou or Rabah. Granted Warren put hatton in some right stinkers but since the ITV move things have been looking up.
I doubt Hatton would be co-headlining at the MEN, however, co-headlining at a 45,000 event in cardiff and just as importantly at prime time UK would have been brilliant, especially considering calzaghe pulled in 2m viewers at 2am!. Surely a Hatton Calzaghe joint bill could pull in at prime time on a sat night 6, 8 ,10m ?? who knows?
Instead he'll be on sky box office with 100,000 odd ppv buys fighting a nobody in the middle of the desert at 4am uk time.... but getting paid well.

The capacity would have to be a fair bit below 80,000, unless they plan on having the top tier watch the bout on giant screens, in which case, paying 40 quid to watch it on telly isn't going to be too popular with the Taffs.

Been to the Millenium a couple of times and whilst you can follow a game of rugby well from the middle tier, following a boxing match with any kind of nuance would be next to impossible.

Whislt fighters deserve the money they earn, I have little interest in watching Hatton get rich fighting easy defences, he's made enough already, and rather than just cashing out, you would hope he would

After all, nobody would want to see Tiger woods showcasing himself against mediocre tour players week in week out, or Federer playing against people below the top 16 in sattelite tournaments, so why should we expect boxers to do so?

Sure, not every fight has to be life and death, but in seriousness, Hatton has only had one really hard night's work, ok, maybe a couple and has coined it in pretty well I should think thus far.

Thing is, how many of the 40,000 would have heard of Roy Jones Jr anyway? or would be able to tell the difference between Kessler and Rudy Markussen? Even though there is a world of difference between those two. A hell of a lot of tickets can be sold off the back of Joe's huge profile right now and getting in a lot of 'night out' type punters who probably dont know too much about boxing. Even if they only sold 25,000 tickets, by shipping in a cheapish opponent and getting peak ITV coverage, Joe would earn his biggest ever purse.

Frank is sounding pretty certain about the June date but he must know that is very tight timing to arrange a big name.

PPV does Ok in America but doesn't Hatton reliase people prefer it on Terrestrial TV?

Anyway I think Calzaghe should terminate Kessler.

my hope would be that 40,000 knew that Jones was damaged goods, but that's a pipe dream. but with a guy like Kessler, the hype machine can really kick in on the basis of the rival world champion, undefeated & a great threat to Calzaghe's titles. obviously he doesn't tap into the brooding powerful Tyson aura that helped make Calzaghe-Lacy anticipated

No way could Calzaghe draw 40,000 people that is not going to happen no matter who he fights. There were 12,000 at the MEN that includes people following the undercard fighters. I don't think they'd get much more than 20,000.
