The best fights to be made from fan interest and big business standpoint
Regardless of which combat sport
This generation's "Fab Four" mix of Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder, Tyson Fury and Joseph Parker.
A final fight of the old lion Manny Pacquiao vs the phenom Vasyl Lomachenko at 140 lbs.
A round robin of Conor McGregor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Yair Rodriguez
Rico Verhoeven vs Tyrone Spong.

Canelo v Golovkin just so everyone can stop talking about the prospect of a fight and start talking about the actual fight
And from a Brit perspective, a healthy Tyson Fury v Anthony Joshua
Oscar De La Hoya v Dana White

Excluding the Crawford-Postol fight, wasn't the Kovalev-Ward bout the worst viewed HBO PPV of 2016, which was compounded by Andre's contractual $5m guarantee and also the fact it wasn't such an exciting contest?Oiky wrote:Golovkin v canelo

Fan standpoint:
Mayweather vs McGregor - it's not a good matchup, but the cross-sport appeal would be huge
Canelo vs GGG - just make it happen already, please!
Business standpoint:
Mayweather vs Pacquiao II - it wouldn't do as well as the first fight, but would still be huge, unfortunately
Mayweather vs McGregor - same reasons as above

From a british point of view Joshua Haye would have a massive cross over fan appeal and make a lot of money especially if they both get ko victories in there next fights

The anticipation for the rematch would ensure Kovalev-Ward II did well.Enlightened-One wrote:Excluding the Crawford-Postol fight, wasn't the Kovalev-Ward bout the worst viewed HBO PPV of 2016, which was compounded by Andre's contractual $5m guarantee and also the fact it wasn't such an exciting contest?Oiky wrote:Golovkin v canelo

I agree that the hardcore fans would love to see the rematch, but I’m not so sure about the mainstream casuals, since the first bout tailored more for boxing purists than casuals who only yearn for blood and guts trench warfare type contests.Like a Boss wrote:The anticipation for the rematch would ensure Kovalev-Ward II did well.Enlightened-One wrote:Excluding the Crawford-Postol fight, wasn't the Kovalev-Ward bout the worst viewed HBO PPV of 2016, which was compounded by Andre's contractual $5m guarantee and also the fact it wasn't such an exciting contest?Oiky wrote:Golovkin v canelo

On my wish list.
Any combination of Andre Ward, Sergey Kovalev, Adonis Stevenson and Artur Beterbiev at Light Heavyweight
Any combination of James DeGale, Callum Smith and George Groves at Super Middle weight.
Gennady Golovkin v Canelo or Billy Joe.Saunders at Middleweight
Kell Brook v the winner of Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman at Welterweight
Are my immediate standouts

Mayweather vs Pacquiao was never going to be "blood and guts trench warfare." Yet it is the biggest fight - by many measures anyway - of all time.Enlightened-One wrote:I agree that the hardcore fans would love to see the rematch, but I’m not so sure about the mainstream casuals, since the first bout tailored more for boxing purists than casuals who only yearn for blood and guts trench warfare type contests.Like a Boss wrote:The anticipation for the rematch would ensure Kovalev-Ward II did well.Enlightened-One wrote: Excluding the Crawford-Postol fight, wasn't the Kovalev-Ward bout the worst viewed HBO PPV of 2016, which was compounded by Andre's contractual $5m guarantee and also the fact it wasn't such an exciting contest?

Agreed, but Ward and Kovalev aren't the most charismatic of individuals and they didn't spend six years selling the bout.Like a Boss wrote:Mayweather vs Pacquiao was never going to be "blood and guts trench warfare." True, but blood and guts isn't the only thing that sells either.Enlightened-One wrote:Agreed, but Ward and Kovalev aren't the most charismatic of individuals and they didn't spend six years selling the bout.Like a Boss wrote:Mayweather vs Pacquiao was never going to be "blood and guts trench warfare." What sells the Kovalev-Ward fight to mainstream casuals, considering:Like a Boss wrote:True, but blood and guts isn't the only thing that sells either.Enlightened-One wrote:Agreed, but Ward and Kovalev aren't the most charismatic of individuals and they didn't spend six years selling the bout.Like a Boss wrote:

• The first fight experienced a low PPV buy-rate
• Their first bout lacked action after the second round
• Both pugilists lack charisma
• Very few casuals probably know who either guy is
What else sells the bout?
Whilst I’d love to see Ward face Kovalev again, I doubt there’s really any interest from the general public.

Re: The best fights to be made from fan interest and big business standpoint
Do you really think anyone who bought the first fight wouldn't buy the second? The controversy of the first result and the publicity it has received would ensure many others jump on board for the rematch.Enlightened-One wrote:What sells the Kovalev-Ward fight to mainstream casuals, considering:Like a Boss wrote:True, but blood and guts isn't the only thing that sells either.Enlightened-One wrote: Agreed, but Ward and Kovalev aren't the most charismatic of individuals and they didn't spend six years selling the bout.

Francisco Vargas vs. Orlando Salido rematch would be good for business and the fans.

The hard-core boxing fraternity will almost certainly watch a Kovalev-Ward rematch, but any casual that watched the first bout probably wouldn’t want to see it again.Like a Boss wrote:Do you really think anyone who bought the first fight wouldn't buy the second? For sure, it’s entirely possible that a prospective Kovalev-Ward II could achieve a better buyrate than the measly 160K that paid the privilege to watch the first bout, but the difference is likely to be trivial.
The S.O.G. will still demand his contractually stipulated $5m payday, which will render the bout loss-making (from Roc Nation’s perspective).
So from a business perspective, the bout doesn’t make financial sense. From a sporting fan viewpoint, only hardcore boxing fans would want to see the rematch, since the first bout probably wouldn’t satisfy casuals who demand blood and guts warfare, exciting slugfests.
