Who has the best chin in boxing?

My top 5.

1. Wayne McCullough ( I think he is Ring magazines number 1 chin in boxing)
2. Erik Morales (Incredible chin)
3. Oliver McCall (I think he has one of the best heavyweight chins of all time)
4. Ricardo Mayorga (Trinidad is a huge puncher and Mayorga let him have 2 free hooks - Trinidads signature punch!)
5. Bernard Hopkins (I think he deserves a mention)

De La Hoya? Oscar's been dropped a few times. He fought very defensively when Quartey got him till the last round when he had to fight or lose. He didn't try to exchange with Trinidad at all and done the same in Mosley 2. Not the actions of a man with confidence in his chin. I think his chin he decent but no-where near the best around.

Morales for sure.... Hopkins got dropped a few times in his first title fight which is pretty hard to believe.....

Interestingly, guys like De La Hoya and Pac-Man only got dropped when they were at the lower weights..... was that due to too much cutting?????

Vargas landed some huge punches on DeLaHoya and he took them well.

Wayne McCulloch is something else though, the guy has been in with some of the biggest hitters in the sport and has barely blinked.

I think Hopkins first title fight was at altitude which seemed to have an effect.

Having a great chin is an over rated quality

Don't get me wrong, good fighters need to be able to take a shot, but being able to soak up excessive amounts of punishment can often be a bad thing.

Look at Ali. capable of taking huge shots over an extended period and now.......

I somehow think some of the extended beatings that have been necessary to put Tyson on the floor ( saw the Douglas fight the other day and bugger he took some leather ) will come back to haunt him and I truly worry about Wayne McUlloch's health in future.

Of the recent fighters, the most "impressive" performances have been by Chi who seems to be made of granite, but I am still not sure it is a good thing

An interesting thing about those two Mosley fights is that in the first one (when they were at equal weights - forget the stuff about Shane moving up) Shane was exploding right hand bombs off his chin from the first five seconds of round one, frequently through the rounds until the last. DLH kept marching forward (fighting one-dimensionally, looking for the KO), but it was only in the twelfth he even looked slightly rocked.

Then in the rematch Mosely lands a cracker of a left hook in the opening round and DLH dips, then fights mostly on the back foot for the rest of the fight. In other words, Mosley seemed to have more power in the rematch - DLH felt it and changed strategy. I'd guess it was a combination of Mosley's steroid abuse and DLH fighting above his natural* weight that lessened his chin in that fight.

In the early fights the Italian, Campagnella(sp?), was the only one who made his eyes roll. Very reminiscent of the Alex Arthur - Gomez fight this one. In the way that DLH came out more interested in the crowd and almost got done in the opening minute with a left hook. The rest of the early knockdowns looked flash to me.

*154lb would probably be his natural weight if it was same day weigh-ins, but I think he could have made welter if he really wanted for most of his spell at 154lb, maybe even now...

Aaron Pryor's chin was inhuman. Also, Vargas never landed flush against Oscar. Mostly on the gloves.

i think one of the advantages of moving up in weight is that you are generally a tad quicker than your opponent so they dont get to land shots quite as flush

i think oscar de la hoya has a gud chin so does chris eubanks chin was really solid aswell and u gottta put james toney up threre asewell hes bin through so many weights and he can still take the punches so hes up there 4 all time chin with oliver mcall
