Bobick/Norton What happened?

I'm not talking about it being a quickie KO. Those happen, but the minute Duane got hit he acted like he had never been in a fight before in the life. He just stood on the ropes, holding his hands incorrectly with a scared look on his face, like the kid in junior high being beaten on by the school bully, until Ken landed a crusher to his jaw. What the Hell? This was a very experienced fighter who had been in with some very good fighters. So what happened?

No one knows for sure, but I hear rumors that sometimes the mob, or religious radicals can get into the mix, and sully about with great hostility, scaring fighters and goofing up the best laid plans. Other times the ropes are just too loose, or a very beautiful woman is seated right up front just to cause this type of chaotic wrong outcome confusion.

Are any of these time tested excuses helpful in this case?

He was an inexperienced fighter, but he never had taken of anyone nearly as good as Norton. He would have been better off taking on someone better than anyone he had fought before taking on Norton.

Having said that, Norton was always going to be too good for him.

My point is more along the lines of "sometimes shyt just happens."

There is a small percentage of fights that take bizarre turns that no one could have predicted.

And was probably only going to happen in that particular way one time in a thousand.


Not that I think Bobick was going to beat Kenny......just that he inadvertently got caught and froze.

In addition not having the talent and skills to be a top fighter, Duane Bobick was far to easy to hit with rights to the head and couldn't really cope with top heavyweights like Ken Norton and "Big John" Tate.

We interested in the more noble nature of boxing reject such abject nomenclature. Ken caught him early as has happened to many HOFers as his career and personal life crumbled.

Prior though, in 1976 he had a contract never picked up to fight Ali who had a miserable 1976. Topic yet another miserable miscarriage of the era as befits the usual suspects.

What happened is Bobick had 2 left feet... The man had horrific defensive skills... very little punching power... no chin... and he was slower than a pregnant elephant dragging a load of pig-iron through quicksand... Norton accomplished no feat of wonder in my view...Bobick was also quickly smashed out by China chinned John Tate and by the inept South African swinger, Kallie Knoetze.. I was amazed Duane made it as far as he did with his lack of confidence, lack of athleticism, and lack of physical coordination.. Duane managed to beat blubber bellied punching bag Chuck Wepner and the green as grass and very light Fred Houpe (a close fight), so I would have matched DB with Alfredo Evangelista or Alfio Righetti next -- NOT Ken Norton.
