Calzaghe V Roy Jones Jr - its on

Post by fist »

Looks like the Calzaghe / Jones Jr fight is innevitable now. See below

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/4795400.stm

Oh and for the two of you (you know who u r) who have been banging on about Calzaghe's victory over Lacy being meaningless, have a read of roy's comments, they exemplify the impact that Joe has made with his wn over Lacy. Kessler my arse lol

Well doesn't matter does it really! What matters is that Joe's time has truly come, will make an amazing fight and is a great opporunity for both to play right at the top of the world stage.

I don't want to see Calzaghe beat up on a faded Jones. Sad day for boxing if it does come off. Rather see Joe take on Clinton Woods in his light-heavy bow, then go after Tarver.

Not blaming Joe on cashing in on his great win last week but we've all seen how far RJJ has slipped. Would have made a fantastic fight three or four years ago.

i doubt it happens. there'll be some snag. i know faded fighters take more risks and are more willing to concede terms when their best has gone, but Jones will want a king's ransom and i can't see how he makes s/m

You know I see where you're coming from, in a way Calzaghe has nothing to gain except a lot of money, more world prominance and potentially a victory over a legend. However, that legend is clearly a shadow of his former self. Plus Jones has nothing to lose and despite not being in his prime could put an end to Calzaghe's streak.

If I were Joe I'd unify his division then move up. WHy not cement his legacy in the division which is pretty much his own. Why not fight for another belt.

I agree. It's never good to see a guy so far past his best taking a beating. This fight will have as much credibility as Ali v Larry Holmes, and will mean nothing as far as Joe's legacy is concerned. If Joe has an ounce of compassion he'll not fight RJJ, and go for meaningful fights like Woods or Kessler.

It's just a shame to see Jones fighting on after such a great career and even though people say he didn't fight him, didn't do that, he was so far ahead of the guys who he fought and watching him get starched by guys he'd have beaten four years ago is sad. Especially so when you get a maverick like Jones who does things his own way and says he'll get out of the sport before he gets hurt and has instead just ended up like another great fighter who couldn't let go.

I'll say it now, this won't happen. Jones will price himself out of it, he may be a spent force, but in his own mind he is still a superstar and will want a fornicating fortune to face Calzaghe.

How can this fight be at 168, I just cannot see Jones making that weight without being horiffically weight drained.

I'd expect Calazage to stop this old Jones with his workrate, fast combinations, south paw style and quick footwork

An old Jones Jr is a far tougher proporsition than a prime Lacy though. Jones Jr is still elusive, still packs a punch, still lightening fast in terms of punch, will know its his last chance (maybe he can train harder knowing hes an underdog), but can not work hard.

168 was Jones best weight maybe he can still make it. Jones will not be the smaller man against Joe as he was against Tarver

Maybe he can drain down to 168 only he knows if he can or can't. With 1day to pack the fluids back in its not going to effect him that much.

This is a big money fight - Jones Jr still sells BIG PPV figures in the US. It will sell out in Wales with a huge crowd - maybe 40,000? Then theres the British TV money - will it be more I'd expect so and would it be PPV here? Jones Jr hasn't been to the UK before and this will make more noise than Lacy fight did.

So theres allot of money for both fighters in this 1.

Agreed. Roy will end up negotiating himself out of it - hope so anyway

totally agree with you. there's a million and one reasons why this fight won't happen. and all of these reasons will start to crop up soon enough. Jones going to Wales, in July, after losing his last 3, AT super middleweight, on prime time in the UK (Warren says the next fight will have to be shown delayed in the US)...as if!

i think the BBC piece jumped the gun. just cos Jones said he'll take it doesn't mean a lot.

Just heard Calzaghe say on the rugby before his walk to pitch that the fight looks on.

this is the frustration of calzaghe. We all know this is his easyist option, yes jones was great but he has been inactive after two stinking performances.

I would like to see him have a easyer one unifiying the devision befor properly moving up and starting a seriouse campaign at light Heavy. Talking Johnson, Tarver and Woods not a washed up Jones.

I Think Joe would take this fight, why wouldn't he want to fight Jones at the Millennium Stadium, Its a massive name and a massive fight, My question is why Jones is so keen to come over this side of the pond and take on someone as skilled as Calzaghe after his last 3 defeats.

This is exactly what I feared. Calzaghe uses the victory over limited and hand-selected Lacy as an excuse to avoid the real challenges at 168 - notably Mike Kessler - to go for have-beens with big names.

Still, if a half-decent RJJ shows up he should give Calzaghe more to think about than Lacy.

For the ecrod: in my book, Calzaghe leaves 168 without ever having been #1.

Earlier today, I read on teletext Roy Jones saying he wants the fight with Calzaghe.

Jones also stated the fight could happen @ 168lbs, is he for real, I doubt he could make 12st now?

With Calzaghe admitting to struggling with the weight, I'll go for this one @ 175lbs!

Jones has lost all of the skills, attributes that made him a great fighter. He is definitely not the force he was. Calzaghe will beat him, and I reckon he'll do it comfortably.

i don't think he's using it as an easy excuse. he's just battered a man who was supposed to thrash him. it just seems a really shortsighted way to cash in. it's like with Tyson. everyone - including Woods, Tarver, Johnson -still wants a piece of Jones.

I'd hate to see this fight happen. But Jones-Hopkins II vanished when we thought it was on. and where did the Jones-Woods II matchup disappear to? it's very likely that this fight will never happen.

quite a few posters have been on calzaghe's case ever since he won last Sunday. However, if he does fight Jones is it any worse than Jones fighting eroded versions of Mike McCallum and Virgil Hill?

I think Calzaghe is clearly No.1 at 168 without fighting Kesseler. Isn't the issue with that one that nether of them want to fight in the other guys back yard.

I dont know what the hell Jones is thinking about having the fight at Super Middle.
Interesting interview with Jones on ESPN.com where he is asked about his last 3 losses. He says he feels like he is now on a level playing field after 10+ years of dominating the sport and instead of retiring he feels you just have to realise certain things dont work anymore and to tweak them.
Dunno how you can tweak fragility though :-?

Kessler knows very well he'd have to do the travelling. That's not even an issue.

Money is the real issue. A Kessler fight can't generate the kind of money that ppl like Roy Jones or Tarver can.
If Calzaghe is to take a risk against someone with real skills, he will want to be well rewarded for his troubles.
