World boxing history challenge Week 5 - Joe Louis vs Max Schmeling

Post by davie »

This is a kind of double header. I'll post both fights here instead of in the supplementary bouts section.
Arguably the most historically significant fight in boxing history.

Schmeling outfoxed the young pup Louis in the 1st fight, really taught him a lesson and it was a bad stoppage for Louis, just a shame that Max never got the title shot against Braddock he deserved

Louis demolished Schmeling in the rematch though, the body/kidney shot that put him down for the last time made him squeal

Schmeling vs Louis 1

1. Schmeling
2. Schmeling
3. Louis
4. 10-8 Schmeling
5. Schmeling
6. Schmeling
7. Louis
8. Louis
9. Schmeling
10. Schmeling
11. Schmeling
12. KO

Schmeling boxed well the first couple rounds, hurt Louis before the knock down in the 4th. The next 2 rounds, Louis started fast but let Schmeling take over. Had a little success to the body in 7 and 8 then fell away.

The stance of Schmeling gave Louis problems, standing very much side on and leaning back over the right foot made it hard for Louis to get his range right and land his own right hand.
Louis got too close as a result and held his left low, allowing Schmeling to land single rights all day.
Schmeling also raised his right as he jabbed, catching and parrying Louis left jab. A nice boxing display that never let Louis get in his stride

I doubt there will have been a fight in Louis career that taught him more

Louis v Schmelling 2.

Lessons learnt, Joe closes the distance early moving in fast with the left hook then working in close. After a couple forays, he tries to jab and gets countered by a right from Schmeling, the story of the first fight, IMO.
Joe lands a lovely left hook counter when Schmelling reaches in at around the minute mark.

After that Louis gets him on the ropes, at close range where he can let shots go, hurts Schmeling and from there in he does as he pleases, landing hard hurtful shots that close out an impressive quick finish.

Joe Louis vs Max Baer

Good action fight with an obvious difference between the two technically
Both famed as big punching fighter. But the technical delivery of punches from the two was night and day. Baer pawed with his jab, while Louis snapped it out, in flurries Louis had variety and well delivered shots, he looked controled when he went to work, while Baer planted his feet and slugged with either hand on the couple occasions he let his hands go, looking wild.
Baer waited, looking for openings while Louis worked them. I scored the first 2 to Louis and the second 2 were a given with the knockdowns in the 3rd and the stoppage

While Schmeling 2 is horrifying, some of the Bomber's most violent performances are against giants. Primo Carnera (6'6'' 260lb), Buddy Baer (6'6'' 250lb) and Abe Simon (6'5'' 255lb) had their lives shortened by the 6', 200lb Joe Louis. Surely the most subtle, efficient and lethal boxing machine ever built!

Hmmm... Louis's life was shorter than Buddy Baer's and 33 years shorter than Schmeling's. So I'm not sure who shortened whose life... The most efficient boxing machine ever built doesn't get knocked down 11 times and knocked out twice -- and doesn't have the kind of vulnerabilities Louis had...

The most subtle, efficient, and lethal machines didn't all reside within a single pugilist.. I would nominate Pep, Lomachenko, and Joshua.. Because the most lethal machine doesn't take 13 rounds do dispose of a Light Heavyweight of lesser note than Michael Spinks ... who seemed to go out rather quickly and efficiently when matched with a Heavyweight powerhouse.
