But if that is true, then why didn't Sonny protest more strongly about the fight being stopped? You would think he would be outraged at the fight being stopped.Ezzard wrote:I agree. I think Liston got hit witha flash knockdown. Ali refused to go to the corner and so Liston stayed down. They get up and start fighting again and then Walcott counts it as a KO. It was utter nonsense. Ali should have been admonished and the fight resumed, that's it. i knwo there are different theories but that's how I see it.generic screen name wrote:I think Liston was VIEWED as a quitter.
I personally think Ali/Liston II was basically Walcott being the worst referee in the history of sports.

The most intimidating boxer are: Gennady Golovkin.. Gary Russell.. Errol Spence.. Vasyl Lomachenko... Terence Crawford.. Artur Betebiev.. Sergei Kovalev.. Luis Otiz.. Anthony Joshua.. and Chris Eubank.. 10 fighters who have a grand total of 2 robbery losses where they seem unable to obtain rematches -- one clear loss to the world's greatest boxer -- and one SD loss by a very green Eubank.
Punchers are usually the most intimidating guys out there -- but before the modern era the most intimidating boxer may have been Gene Tunney.. Dempsey insisted his fights with Tunney be limited to 10 rounds -- a rather unusual request, so I think Jack was a little intimidated.. An extra 5 rounds and he could have gotten his head beaten in severely.. The gates and attendance for those 2 fights set records that lasted for many decades.

In the Bio Hands Of Stone it is admitted Duran could never look Tommy square in the eye.
Tommy had him crapping it for sure. The utter annihilation was incredible given Durans effort against Marvin. Hard to just have ten guys rated...Nigel Benn, G-Man Monzon, Briscoe, Ron Lyle, Kid Norfolk, Jack Johnson all deserve a shout.
Re: Rank the most intimidating boxers of all-time
Why not??? He looked Barkley straight in the eye.. And Barkley had no trouble looking Hearns in the eye.. And I think Duran expected to win from the way he was throwing.. He was too short and stubby to reach Hearns -- and Tommy was too tall and long limbed for Duran to escape the shelling Hearns was delivering.. Duran was a Lightweight and lighter for 65 fights.. So he couldn't take on the role of Hagler.golden oldie wrote:Good shout on Hearns.

I don't agree -- even though I believe the 1950's version of Liston was a better boxer than Foreman ever was.. But when it came to taking punches, Marty Marshall was a Light Heavyweight and he beat Liston up... Leotis Martin was little more than a Light Heavyweight and he knocked Liston out cold.surf-bat wrote:dr_devious wrote:How can you say Liston was just a bully, and cant take it? As Clay said to Dundee, 'the guy's a bully and bulies can't take it'...la knew that Liston was this type of character and exploited it.
Now Foreman was intimidating no doubt
As for intimidating fighters, I agree that Bob Foster should be in the top 10, and Sam Langford and Stan Ketchel would have been very intimidating too
I agree. Actually, it was Foreman who couldn't take it. Not Liston.
Nothing like that ever happened to Foreman.. George was a great absorber like Oliver McCall. Did you see the monster shots Foreman took from Alex Stewart for 10 rounds when he was 43??? My Lord Steward pasted him. George squeaked a 1-point decision on 2 judges cards to edge it, but Kry-ME he took some hard shots.. I don't know what happened to his defense for that fight but you can't say he couldn't take it. His head was the size of a beach ball. His head wasn't swollen up like that for the Ali fight.. He was hardly beaten up at all.. It was sheer exhaustion rather than his chin was dented.
Re: Rank the most intimidating boxers of all-time
When Jimmy Young knocked Foreman down that was exhaustion too.. Young was a feather hitter but if you're exhausted you don't care.. You just want to rest

He didn't look intimidated to me at all. Duran intimidated hagler. Hearns never gets credit for calling the round. I laughed when he told Duran ,2 rounds.Tomasino wrote:golden oldie wrote:Good shout on Hearns.

Just because a fighter doesn't intimidate one person doesn't mean they aren't intimidating. I'm sure Wladmir isn't intimidated at all by Anthony Joshua. And just because a fighter wins doesn't mean they weren't intimidated. Leonard was intimidated by both Hearns and Hagler.
Gary Russell didn't intimidate Loma. Hell, he doesn't intimdate anyone with his mushroom T rex arms. No one is really scared of him.
Kovalev didn't intimidate Ward Even if you believe Ward lost, Ward didn't run from Kovalev after.
Eubank didn't initimdate Calzaghe and I doubt Mcclellan would've been intimdated by him had they fought.
Re:
If you're a tough guy you intimidate people who don't belong in the ring with you... Hagler intimidated Hearns.. Liston intimidated Patterson.. Tyson intimidated Spinks.. Dempsey intimidated Fulton... Ali intimidated London... Frazier intimidated Quarry... Foreman scared the Hell out of Nortongeneric screen name wrote:1. Prime George Foreman '73-'78 - he destroyed THE linear champ at the time, and Norton, who's no wuss, wouldn't even look at him in the eyes.
2. Mike Tyson '85-'90 - Mike was the last person you would wanted see in a back alley, definately typified the "thug" persona
3. Sonny Liston early '60s - destroyed Patterson and everyone on his way up
4. Marvin Hagler - looked mean, and intimidated while in the ring, Mugabi knew he just couldn't win in the 11th, and Mugabi wasn't a quitter or wuss, took SEVERAL right hands from Hearns and seemed to not even flinch
5. Jack Dempsey - the first person with the "glare", huger opponents were even scared of him
6. Thomas Hearns's right hand - made linear opponents look like tomato cans, ask Roberto Duran
7. Muhammad Ali's mouth - got into people's nerves just a tad, and people who can talk the talk and walk the walk are definately intimidating
8. Roberto Duran - especially on Leonard-Duran I, where he gave Leonard no breathing room and purposely showed no sportsmanship IMO
9. Joe Frazier - Philadelphia fighter, Foreman even admitted he was intimidated by Frazier
10. Rocky Marciano
If you believe in yourself and your skills you won't buy into acts or words of intimidation... Douglas and Holyfield fairly sneered at Tyson in disgust when he tried to psyche them... Foreman was definitely bothered that Jimmy Young seemed so calm and resolute "That big lug can glare and growl at me. But he can't beat me" Young said... An angry Holmes shoved Ali before their fight because Ali thought he could somehow psyche the man who they both knew was about to dole out a one-sided beating... Norton was angry at Bobick because he tried to use intimidation tactics before the fight. "I'm insulted. He's a green-assed punk" ... Frazier tried to intimidate Foreman at the weigh-in, which angered Foreman. "He's a joke. I'm going to hurt that little man."
