I'll try my best to translate the Interview with his wife, Julia, from German to English:


Q: Dear Julia, boxing fans want to know, how is Eddy doing right now?

Julia: It's hard to answer this question, but we need to be happy he's alive. He's in a stable condition. He knows we're here, and he recognizes us, i am sure.

Q: What memories do you have about the fight? Did you notice something, when he's got hurt?

Julia: I turned it off after the 7th round. I had too much fear for Eddy, i just couldn't watch. I've prayed he doesn't get hurt. Even today, i can't dare to watch this fight.

Q: Would it have been better to stop this fight early?

Julia: If they had stopped it, maybe Eddy wouldn't have been hurt as bad. Maybe he would have had the opportunity to live his own life. If you get injured this way, every minute counts. In November 2013 he's fought (Dmitry) Sukhotsky, when his left eye got hurt & swollen. Luckily they have stopped it early. But i can't take such questions anymore, or i'll break down. Sadly i can't turn back the clock, i can only accept this heavy fate. I'll use up the last power i have left, to help Eddy as good as i can, and try to take him back into life & be there for our 3 kids.

Q: Do you know what happened after the fight? His condition, when he was rushed into the hospital in London?

Julia: After the fight i've waited for Eddy's phone call. I called him, and sent him text messages, but he didn't answer. Usually he calls me, shortly after his fights. Even his brother & his dad didn't know anything more. Alex (Eddy's brother) was called shortly before 1 AM. It was said, Eddy has been taken into hospital to check his eye, just to be safe. But it wouldn't be anything bad, and we shouldn't be in panic. In the middle of the night, we've got the shocking call, Eddy has had an emergency surgery because of brain bleeding, and he may not survive it.

As i heard, it has been like this, after the fight: Eddy went to his cabin, and looked for his team doctor, so she could sew his cut. He sat down, and wasn't able to take off his shoes. He couldn't even lift his legs onto the sofa, and needed help from a team member. He said, he's had pain, but everybody thought he was talking about his eye. As the doctor stitched up his eye, he said, he's got a headache. He began to tremble, to sweat and felt ill. As the doc has been almost done, his eyes turned back into his head. They called the paramedic, and everyone knew its been bad, and something had to happen quickly. He fell unconscious deeply, and we couldn't move him. First aid has been done right here, until they have taken him into hospital.

Q: How long he's been in coma?

Julia: Two days after surgery, they began to reduce the sedation. Even after one week, he hasn't woke up. "We are very sorry, this is his condition" the doctors said. He hasn't been in artificial coma anymore, but been unconscious. This lasted for around five more weeks.

Q: What do the doctors say about his current condition?

Julia: They said, its a very serious injury, its a miracle he's even survived. His right half of the brain is almost completely damaged, then there are multiple constrictions, and strokes again & again, in the whole part of the brain.

Q: What do the doctors say about his future?

Julia: They said he'll always need our help, most likely for the rest of his life. The injury is just too big, and the progress is too little, even after this long time. We should be clear, that rehab ends for him soon. We don't want to give up, and want to take him into another facility, but after a few days, they said, even here, his rehab can't be longer than 8-12 weeks, and he's gotta return home soon.

Q: Can Eddy walk again? Did he recover, and how sucessful has the rehab really been?

Julia: No, sadly he can't walk. He can't talk either. We hope to hear his voice again, some day. I hope he'll hug me again, and say: „Sweetheart, i love you, i know you're my wife, and we have three wonderful children“. Sometimes he can nod his head to communicate with us.

Q: The fight has been five months ago, what has happened since?

Julia: My sister moved here to support me. I am looking for work, for a few hours a day. Everything i could sell, i have sold. I told our kids, and now they can meet their dad. George Groves promoter called, and will transfer the donations soon.

Q: What about Eddy's promoter?

Julia: We don't have contact anymore.

Q: Is Eddy's future financially safe?

Julia: No its not. There is no employer's liability insurance association or anything similar for boxers, there is no pension either.

Q: Something fans want to know, especially those who box themselves: How do you protect yourself from those injuries, and is there risk if such things can happen again & again?

Julia: It can always happen. As a boxer you should be very careful about which team to choose. If you can't see on one eye, fights should be stopped immediately. The risk is too big to take further damage, because you can't see anymore.

Q: You told us about your three children with eduard, how old are they?

Julia: The oldest is 8yrs, the other is 7yrs, and our daughter is 3yrs old.

Q: What kind of help is necessary right now?

Julia: Our home has to be coverted to be disability-friendly, and i need all necessary machines to ensure his further rehability. I want to do everything at home, as they did in the hospital. For care at home, the health insurance only covers very limited actions. But even after half a year, injured people like Eddy do make progress. I'll do everything to support him, but i need help. He'll need care 24/7.

How dreadful for Eddy and the family, the longer it went I guess we knew the outcome would be something like this, however, it really brings it home hearing the story told by his wife. There are no words that can make this better but all my best wishes to Eddy and his family.

Terrible really. Thoughts with his family. Nothing worse than a brave corner team. He'd lost the fight big time by Round 9, there was absolutely no point in him being there for that beating for the last 3-4 rounds. Such a shame. The most recent pic, he looks not there, very upsetting.

It's one of those fights that should have been stopped even though the fighter was never badly hurt. Briggs vs Vitali, Hatton vs malinaggi come to mind. Stopping cotto Pac-Man was another one. These are fairly common sense fights where there should have been a stoppage.

Additional info:

Needless to say, it was a very emotional interview, with many tears which couldn't be held back. His wife, Julia only weighs 42kg/92lbs right now, probably suffering as bad (with him) as Eddy himself. Worst time still to come, when he gets out of hospital, and she has to be home 24/7 to take care of him.

One of many details: At the emergency surgery in London, they had to take off his right skullcap, because of the pressure / heavy swelling of bis brain. Just after months in February 2017 in Germany, they closed his right side of the head with CAD (computer aided design) plastic skull.
