Charles Martin working with Jamel McCline as he preps for comeback
Charles Martin is working with ex-heavyweight title challenger Jameel McCline in Florida as he preps for a likely comeback in the spring, Mike Borao, who manages Martin, told RingTV.com on Thursday.
Martin hasn’t fought since he was knocked out in two rounds by Anthony Joshua last April in London. Martin’s reign of 85 days was the second shortest in the history of the sport, barely three months. Since then, Martin has worked on a rap album (it drops in June) and released a bizarre series of social media posts.
He was also shot in the forearm last August in Los Angeles after getting into an argument with two men. But Borao, who co-managed McCline, says that Martin is fine — both physically and mentally — and ready to get on with his career. Borao sent Martin (23-1-1, 21 knockouts) down to Boca Raton, Florida in early January to work out with McCline on his conditioning at the Big Time Boxing Gym.
“We’re going to give it a little test and see how it goes,” Borao told RING. “Jameel is a guy that’s been through everything Charles has been through with the celebrity and the boxing. And I think it’s a good fit to have like a mentor.” Rather than work on Martin’s skills as a boxer, they’re simply focusing on his fitness to get him in shape. “He’s just doing some conditioning just to see where he’s at because you don’t just take eight months off and get right back to start sparring on day one,” Borao said. “So, the whole thing is to go and get a little conditioning for two or three weeks and go from there. A change in environment isn’t the worst thing.”
If all goes well, Borao envisions Martin returning to the ring sometime in April or May in a bounce-back fight before he takes on tougher fare. Martin is still just 30 years old, young for a heavyweight. “I think he’ll be in the ring in a tune-up type opponent in 90 days — I could see that being realistic,” Borao said. “We’ll see how the first 30 days goes with strictly conditioning because we haven’t gotten into anything beyond that. He lost 15-20 pounds, and he’s a guy that traditionally has to beef up for his fights.”
Martin attended the junior middleweight title bout between Erislandy Lara and Yuri Foreman on Jan. 13 in Hialeah, Florida during which time he mingled with other heavyweight contenders such as Jarrell Miller and Luis Ortiz. “I think that kind of got Charles’ juices flowing,” Borao said. “He got to talk a little bit with Jarrell Miller. He got to talk to Luis Ortiz and I’m pretty sure that was the first or second fight he’s been at since the Joshua fight. I believe his time off will benefit him.”

Re: Charles Martin working with Jamel McCline as he preps for comeback
Well he did win the lottery when Fury got stripped & he beat nobody to get a #2 IBF ranking & then Glazkov blew out his knee in their fight to allow him to win the IBF title. He then went on to get a fat payday in England over Joshua. Joshua is really the only tough fight he has been in. Glazkov is ok but he was one fighter that got a few home town decisions to get his shot so it was karma biting him in the butt when he got hurt. In my eyes Glazkov & Martin were 2 of the most undeserving fighters In my life time to get to fight for a vacant title. Adding Martin back to the mix is good for the division. A tune up or 2 against C level journeymen (Nagy Aguilera & Fred Kassi are a couple of choices) is all he needs. There is no point going down & fighting the Harold Sconiers type fighters anymore. He has only been out of the ring since April 9 2016. He needs to show the boxing world he wasn't just a lottery winner. He has lots to prove...

It wouldn't surprise me a bit of McCline had enough in the tank to beat Martin now.
Prince Charles is the worst title holder in HW history. By a good margin.

He won the lottery with his ranking & title win. Still a name to add to the HW mix. Let's see what he has now that his name is out there. A big southpaw with some pop. The Glazkov fight showed us little as did the Joshua fight. We still have no idea how good he is.

Not good. Not good at all. He doesn't even know how to throw a punch correctly.joe strong wrote:He won the lottery with his ranking & title win. Still a name to add to the HW mix. Jameel McCline
must be working on his speed?
Re: Charles Martin working with Jamel McCline as he preps for comeback
Good luck to him, I still like him, but I doubt he'll be a top fighter.

I hope the dope smoking, crap talking, dive taking, biggest idiot, biggest disgrace in boxing does makes a comeback and gets put into a coma!
Re: Charles Martin working with Jamel McCline as he preps for comeback
The worst was Michael Bentt... Probably the worst any division ever produced... But Martin certainly needs to learn how to box and punch.. He's not what I would call a natural.. His footwork, his jab, his combinations and his defense are all fkd up... He's big, tall, and a southpaw -- and he can take a fare punch..punchoutsb wrote:It wouldn't surprise me a bit of McCline had enough in the tank to beat Martin now.

Dominic Breazeale can take a real good punch -- which makes him a little better prospect if I were to choose between the 2.. But Breazeale gets hit too easily.. I can't believe a guy can't learn more about Boxing in going on 5 years as a pro than Breazeale has learned.. What does he do when he gets to the gym?

Atleast Bentt got a legit win against Morrison. Martin fought an awful opponent, and won when his opponent's knee went.Kalan wrote:The worst was Michael Bentt...

"This is amazing news and i look forward to seeing how well Charles Martin performs for the rest of his career" said no one ever.
Re: Charles Martin working with Jamel McCline as he preps for comeback
Charles Martin is seriously bad. It's embarrassing that someone with such little skill can get anywhere near a world title.
Re: Charles Martin working with Jamel McCline as he preps for comeback
No boxing fan should wish that on any fighter...In the know 85 wrote:I hope the dope smoking, crap talking, dive taking, biggest idiot, biggest disgrace in boxing does makes a comeback and gets put into a coma!

He's probably just taking some prescription crack for pain related to the gunshot.Coachmanager wrote:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaoS5akHVuM

Sometimes a boxer wins a World Title on a bit of a fluke -- and it goes to his head like Martin.. You've got lackies around you kissing your ass and introducing you to hot women as "The Undefeated Heavyweight Champion of the World" ... It's a fkking dream come true.. The Bimbos are knocked dead because they never met a Heavyweight Champ.. So they start to think they're the finished article and don't have to work that hard on their boxing skills.. They buy a 150 thousand dollar car and a lot of fancy clothes.. because their next fight is already being lined up and they're trying to play the part of the classy world champion.. Any humility they ever had is out the window.. Martin is still a half-baked fighter and doesn't know it.. He's been working on his skills for years and they're still weak as fk.
Joshua saw right through Martin for the fraud he is... Martin got nose to nose with him and Joshua grinned as only a genuinely amused person can grin.. He blew a raft of hot air in Martin's face "HAAAAAAH" ... That startled Martin. Joshua knew he was dealing with a Heavyweight Champion who didn't deserve to be there.. AJ was prepared for a hard 12-round fight -- but knew it would probably be short and sweet...a round or 2.. It turned out to be nothing at all.

The money I lost on this crack addict.. eff him and his life.. the way that he lost.. I.e sitting on his ass fully conscious looking up at aj smiling and not getting up, the money he got paid for this sham of a fight, the way he has subsequently behaved on social media. I was fuming when he only got shot in the arm. He should have been shot in the head. So yeah I hope he gets ko'd in the most brutal way possible!chinarich wrote:No boxing fan should wish that on any fighter...In the know 85 wrote:I hope the dope smoking, crap talking, dive taking, biggest idiot, biggest disgrace in boxing does makes a comeback and gets put into a coma!
