The FEATHERWEIGHT game: *VOTE CLOSED*
The FEATHERWEIGHT game: *VOTE CLOSED*
Our Sixth thread in the series, following the success of the Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight, Middleweight, Welterweight & Lightweight threads...
This is a game which will be decided by the wisdom of the crowd.
Each of us has our own opinions on who was better than who, or which achievement was greater than others.
But let's bring it all together and allow simple mathematics to decide it all.
The game is this, each poster names and ranks his Top 10 Featherweights of all time and with each ranking comes a certain number of points.
First place gets 10 points, tenth place gets 1 point - and everything fits in between.
Posters are NOT allowed to edit their posts or change their minds as it will effect the overall accumulated points for each fighter.
I will keep a track of the total scoring each time I'm online. This game has a 30-day deadline, after 30 days - the final points totals will be decided.
Our deadline day will be March 1st.

Re: The FEATHERWEIGHT game: *VOTE OPEN*
I always tend to make a list of about 20 of the best fighters that I can think of who've fought in each weight class.
Then try to narrow them down to the top 15.
Then try to make some sort of sequence for a top 10.
Boy, this is hard for the Featherweights - considering how much weight-hopping there has been where some very good fighters maybe had a fight or two here, then moved upward. So could they be considered "Great Featherweights" - I'm not so sure.
I think I'll need an hour or two of re-checking records, before I make an attempt at my top ten.

Re: The FEATHERWEIGHT game: *VOTE OPEN*
If you type "Great Featherweights" into google you will get a picture bar of all the great featherweight champions, except there seems to be a small problem, Danny Lopez looks an awful lot like Johnny Depp and Chalky Wright is the 'Chalky Wright' from Boardwalk Empire, not the fighter - I thought Google was suppose to be perfect; wonder how we can get them to fix this . . . ?

Danny Little Red Lopez ?

Chalky Wright ?
Makes me wonder - is that really a picture of George Dixon or just some kid posing for a picture 110 years ago; why do we trust what we find online?

3. Sandy Saddler
4. Kid Chocolate
5. Salvador Sanchez
6. Abe Attell
7. Freddie Miller
8. Eusebio Pedroza

Re: The FEATHERWEIGHT game: *VOTE OPEN*
Doesn't feel like Featherweight is even half as deep as 160, 147 or 135 to me. After a bit of shuffling have ended up with Dixon at #4 which feels high (he was better at Bantamweight so far as I can tell) though I don't want to put any of 5-10 above him.
1. Willie Pep
2. Sandy Saddler
3. Salvador Sanchez
4. George Dixon
5. Kid Chocolate
6. Eusebio Pedrosa
7. Alexis Arguello
8. Azumah Nelson
9. Abe Attell
10. Johnny Kilbane
Having another look at Saddler's featherweight vs featherweight fights bumped him up just above Sanchez for me (he was less consistent at the higher weights). Surprised to be the first to mention Azumah Nelson.

Agreed. I just missed out with Nelson. Brilliant fighter he was. Would've loved to have seen him in with McGuigan.HyacinthusTurnipseed wrote:Surprised to be the first to mention Azumah Nelson.
Re: The FEATHERWEIGHT game: *VOTE OPEN*
Great category that had a lot of great boxers.
I like Armstrong but objectively has a not resume in this category to be at the top of the list(top5). There boxer who deserve to be in front of it.
Willie Pep was certainly the first name in the category.
I wonder how people look at Azumah Nelson,Naseem Hamed and Barry McGuigan and I'm glad you mentioned.

Petey Sarron and it should be mentioned.
Re: The FEATHERWEIGHT game: *VOTE OPEN*
Realistically me, this category has always been the most difficult to make my top 10 ! I'm sure form just the first 5 .
For others it could be easily and otherwise.
It is easy to list 6-10 could look different. , the order could change a few times because I always have arguments for one way or another, with these fighters 6-10 places just as I see Armstrong, Alexis Arguello, ,George Dixon,Johnny Kilbane and they are all easily be on the list of 6-10, I decided for these fighters but really is not any difference.
My 10
1.Willie Pep
2.Sandy Saddler
3.Salvador Sanchez
4.Abe Attell
5.Eusebio Pedroza
6.Vincente Saldivar
7.Freddie Miller
8.Naseem Hamed
9.Kid Chocolate
10.Azumah Nelson

Sandy Saddler?
Have you forgotten about it or really do not have Saddler on the list?
I really wonder because I never saw a list without his name.
Your choice of course and I'm just asking. Usually he is NR2 or NR3.

Re: The FEATHERWEIGHT game: *VOTE OPEN*
I made a list the other day and decided not to post it yet.
I had Salvador Sanchez* at number 2.
*I put one of these little stars next to his name with an explanations that I thought he was great enough to have gone on to be good enough to make second on the list and was robbed of the opportunity. I thought I would need to explain that but then I see the first few lists and he's second or third on every one
