.traps are humps that support the neck, that exercise (up right row)is a bit of a killer for the shoulders , go for shrugs instead for big traps also military press

I've always found cleans to be the ultimate for building trap size and strength. Spot on about upright rows, terrible for rotators and quite an unnatural motion though it isn't typically used for traps, rather as a delt movement it's still not ideal.

need good form , could do some damage if you get them wrong wouldn't you say. i agree if you can do them you have big traps already. i have to admit though i think up right rows are great for traps brilliant pump of them

Cleans or Upright rows?

Good form is essential for any lift, but cleans of any kind are very explosive so form becomes even more important. I've never had anyone I work with suffer an injury on cleans, but we start very light regardless of background and progress slowly. It looks herky jerky to untrained eye and I have seen people hurt who just grab the weight and start cranking and swinging. I actually never have anyone do upright rows anymore. There are much better exercises that are much safer so I just cut them out of programming in general.

i agree the reason i dont do cleans now is cause of knee pain. but that shows how good of and exercise it is a real compound and for forarms it is great for. i did a lot of up right rows in early 20s my shoulders killed, i paired it with loads of military press , push up, shoulders got so bad couldnt lift a remote, don't touch them now

Fabulous compound power movement, but yeah since it utilizes the entire kinetic chain any injury up or down the way can really hinder performance. How did you do your knee in?

wear and tear. done discs in lower back so box squat now which i think are really good, stops that curve when you get deep in atg squat

Box squats are another amazing exercise even with a good healthy back, not enough people do them in my opinion.

i agree , taught me to have wider stance control the weight when sitting back , then stop bang explosive up gaaing, rather than the deep squat down fast try to bounce up out the hole .

FWIW the number one mistake I see and the main reason people do their knees in squatting is they allow the knee to track forward over their feet too much. Box squats are the best way to learn proper squat form short of having a high calibre coach by your side. You can really learn to squat well on your own just using the good old box!

true boxs helps , i think wider stances helps the knees not going over the toes , as when i did front squats found my stance not very wide and knees can get bit over when tired and you cave in. ever do zercher squats, apart from being uncomfortable , found them not bad

Wider stance helps if you squat low bar, more powerlifting style. Foot placement is such an individualized thing, but its very common to hear people say they can't keep their weight on their heals, knees need to go forward, etc etc. That's bull, its just that they haven't nailed the fundamentals yet. It really is a very technical lift, one of my absolute favorites. So many moving parts.

Zerchers are great, very uncommon to see in most gyms. They are just about the best gym substitute for stone lifting, at least a little carry over. They are never comfortable, but they are better on an axle bar.

I used to love doing upright rows with the E-Z bar.

However I do blame this exercise for my shoulder problems - surgery on both shoulders for subacromial decompression.

Add in that i have bulging discs and my back is fucked so I can't squat, deadlift or even flat bench - my tricep kickbacks are coming on a treat though, now up to 5kg !

Put on some proper weight lifting shoes, lifts the heels and transforms the squat which has always been my nemesis, that and a strong core helps to hold a tight form.

I hit a 180kg pb at bw in the 70's last Sunday and full depth, video'd for proof as I get pissed with people doing half rubbish then claiming the lift.

Nice lift mate. You can't be truly strong with a weak core, plays a central role that should be obvious but a lot of people trying to get strong forget about it.

Exactly what I was thinking, skimming this crap. I thought this thread was about David Haye, not some posters adventures in the free weights. No one cares.
