Mayweather's legacy
Mayweather's legacy
Regardless of whether he's gonna fight McGregor, should have retired after Pacquiao etc.. In his current state, how do you think he'll be viewed ten years from now
Personally he's top five all time and nobody will ever come close to his PPV numbers, regardless of who's fighting I'll never be as excited as was when I stayed up for one of Floyd's fights

Were you really that excited for all of Floyd's fights? I was like that for only a couple of his fights. His fights with DLH, Shane, and Manny all had me pretty hyped. But other than that I was interested, but not overwhelmed. He never really produced enough drama inside the ring to have me biting at the bit.

Re: Mayweather's legacy

Definitely not tbe

Re: Mayweather's legacy
He'll be remembered as the best fighter of his generation and one of the Top 20 or 25 P4P fighters of all time. If he fights McGregor or anybody else and gets that 50-0 mark it'll raise his profile just a bit more. To the knowledgeable fans a win over McGregor won't amount to much, but to casual fans and hardcore fans alike the 50-0 benchmark would be no small feat.
Re: Mayweather's legacy
The guy who made a Manny fight boring.
The guy who showboats the championship rounds by dancing around the ring.
The guy who made a Canello fight boring.
But most of all The guy who made a lot of money from boxing.
The best ever?
Not by a long way.

Re: Mayweather's legacy
I believe Floyd's PPV numbers will be eclipsed by 2022.. I think some historians will consider him the best ever.. Others will note that he ducked the undefeated Keith Thurman and Kell Brook in World Welterweight Championship Unification Fights, to fight Andre Berto.DannyMCR wrote:Regardless of whether he's gonna fight McGregor, should have retired after Pacquiao etc.. Re: Mayweather's legacy
Top 40, he'll be consensus top 10 in two decades.
Re: Mayweather's legacy
His resume from lightweight and under was exceptional, and filled with some entertaining fights. He wasn't just boxing, he had killer instinct back then, the way he did Corales was dirty, and giving the always dangerous Castillo a rematch was an awesome move. He was hungry, and willing to take on anyone. However after his first fight at super lightweight against Corley, i noticed Floyd was a bit careful in the opponents he would choose(i.e choosing to fight Bruseles over Harris who had a belt). Floyd at that point was more conscious about keeping his '0' and making the most money he could make than fighting the best challenges out there.
But yeah, definitly amongst the greats.

...which way do you want it? Both ways? McGregor isn’t a boxer. Completely different sport and would add zero.gilgamesh wrote:He'll be remembered as the best fighter of his generation and one of the Top 20 or 25 P4P fighters of all time. Mayweather is up there with the creme de la creme.....quite possibly this goes hand in hand with the fact he didn’t bring much dynamite to the ring. Mayweather, I would say, is a genius.
Re: Mayweather's legacy
Also he has negotiated several tough assignments on the way to his cruising altitude. I thought he was blistering in his fight with Sharmba Mitchell, for instance.

Hand picked opponent's like no other all time great I can remember off the top of my head a HOF certainly but the 0 doesn't mean as much as Floyd thinks
Re: Mayweather's legacy
A master boxer and businesses man who did what he wanted and succeeded
fought most of the top men young and old.

Re: Mayweather's legacy
When people look back he will be remembered better than he is now, by a long shot. Having 25 or 26 championship fights has to be near a record, besides being unbeaten.
Sugar Ray Leonard, who is often put ahead of Floyd as an atg, had huge gaps in his career, and fought guys at the right time, and is remembered as better than he actually was, in my opinion. Three fights that bother me are Hearns 1&2, and Hagler. If 12 rounds, Hearns would have won by UD in the first one, and in the second, called a draw, was a clear Hearns win even by SRL's own opinion. Hagler win was very questionable, and SRL definitely avoided a rematch, which should have happened. He knew he got away with one. By age 34 SRL was done. Match any version of Floyd vs SRL from early 30's on, and Floyd would have won easily.

Re: Mayweather's legacy
Salvador Sanchez, Gene Tunney, and Willie Pep were better boxers at their best... I can't think of another retired boxer who would be.

Re: Mayweather's legacy
His legacy is more about being the most successful boxer who ever lived.
If you're looking purely at boxing, then he's top 30ish. I would place more stock in the great feats fighters like Ali, Leonard, Duran etc. pulled off (and that's just from the modern era) than a cosmetically pleasing record.
Floyd was magic as a super feather but as a welter, he didn't beat anyone (in the state they were in at the time he fought them) that someone like Oscar wouldn't have beaten.

Re: Mayweather's legacy
It's laughable to read so many comments attempting to undermine Mayweather's legacy, by suggesting that he somehow "cheated" his way to achieving all of his accomplishments, such as claims about him cherry-picking his opponents at a time when they were not at the peak of their powers.
If Floyd Mayweather's legacy is really so flawed and unimpressive, then shouldn't his feats be commonplace?
In my mind, Money May is the best fighter of the last fifteen years. No fighter in the history of the sport has managed their career anywhere near as well as Mayweather, which is a claim that is irrefutable in nature.
Put it this way, if you had a son who chose to become a professional boxer, are there any fighters that you'd want his career to emulate in preference to Floyd Mayweather's?
Floyd's legacy will improve over time, because that's an inevitable consequence of nostalgia. People don't appreciate things until long after they're gone.

Top 40 ATG resume
Top 20 ATG talent
Top 20 HTH.
Top 5 ATG defensive boxer
What puts him down is he never fought a great in their prime and never truly DTBG.

Re: Mayweather's legacy
As time goes on and the sport slowly recovers from how badly Floyd raped and pillaged it, history will not paint him in a flattering light. As we begin to see the fights we were supposed to see between the best and the best during Floyd's reign, fans will criticize him even more for his light resume.
My biggest fear is the success of Mayweather Promotions. If Floyd accumulates significant talent and controls the competitive edge of boxing's future than the sport is in dire trouble. I'm talking catastrophe. Then no one will ever fight anyone and we'll all have to listen to his pissy opinion if his fighter loses. Boxing's only hope is that boxers smarten up and opt to stay away from this cancer.

The most protected overrated boring handpicking fighter in history - had the protection and corruption of boxing politics carefully managing his career - true greats don't want or need protection because they truly seek to fight and conquer the best - Floyd is a great fraud pretender who was very talented at 130 and 135 but he was a WWE choreograph at welter -

Re: Mayweather's legacy
As the face of boxing Floyd was so ugly and repulsive that he has left the sport in a shambles now where even female mma fighters outdraw and outsell a superfight like Kovalev vs Ward - sports fans don't trust boxing anymore because of Fraud Floyd and Haymon - hopefully with Floyd kicked out of the sport (no one will pay to see anymore of his fixes) the true greats of the sport will emerge and the fans will come back and buy boxing events and PPVS again - Floyd and Haymon are the worst thing that ever happened to boxing -

Re: Mayweather's legacy
Haymon wanted to rule the sport and he could only do that with a top superstar to sell as his leverage and product so he manufactured and choreographed Fraud Floyd to be his counterfeit pretender - Business wise they did a great job selling us this fraud but now the consequences are still hurting and damaging the sport which has sunk to new lows even below female UFC fights -
Re: Mayweather's legacy
+ best defense skills in history of boxing
+ solid resume, especially Corrales, Judah and Cotto
+ few entertaining fights
- too many ass!oles around him
- too much bullsh!t arround Pacquiao "megafight"
- not facing Pacquiao, Mosley at their primes, facing Alvarez at catchweight
- too many boring fights
- this whole TBE bullsh!t
- and many more, gloves in Maidana fight, referee in second Maidana fight, dirty punch in Ortiz fight ......
I am glad he is not arround anymore, but when i see Broner and similar idiots now, i miss him.

The best boxer in the last 20+ years. Very skilled boxer and probably one of the smartest boxers I've ever seen. Defensively brilliant, great at making adjustments and uncanny timing.
Alot of his wins are very underrated and alot that has to do with his style of fighting and his personality. But to be honest there isn't another fighting right now that has the boxing ability to duplicate what Floyd achieved.
