Josh Taylor vs Warren Joubert 24th March

Post by Stuarty »

Taylor will be making a defence of his Commonwealth title against South African champion Warren Joubert at the Meadowbank Arena on the 24th of March. He said recently after this defence he wants to move onward and up a level before eventually challenging Ricky Burns in an all Scottish affair possibly by the end of the year. It remains to be be seen whether Burns will still be champion by the end of the year but regardless of that its still a great scrap and a massive test for Taylor.

I've not seen this Joubert guy at all but had a look at his record and there's nothing that jumps out and suggests he's anything more than ordinary. Record looks good at a glance but there's a lack of any names of note and he's been stopped a couple of times. Hopefully Taylor can get him out the way without any problems and get 2/3 more bouts in this year.

I'm not sure how a Burns fight would play out. I suppose it'll depend on timing. If Burns unifies against Indongo then I'd stay away if I was Taylor. Even if he beats Burns and wins a world title early it places a target on his back and could end up being detrimental for his development in the long run. If Burns was to lose next time out then a fight between the two at the end of the year probably makes more sense for both. Besides that there are still plenty of names at 140 domestically I wouldn't mind seeing Taylor in with.

If he wants to fight Burns within the year then why is he fighting such a nothing opponent next?

It doesn't make sense.

There's about 20 more interesting domestic opponents that he could have fought instead.

Yeah I'd agree there. I've not seen anything of this guy but he looks a step down from the likes of Ryan. It looked as if McGuigan was fast tracking Taylor so when I seen this guys name pop up I was slightly surprised. It's easy to get over excited which I am guilty of with Taylor but it's probably worth remembering he's a novice pro. There's a few guys I'd love to see him in with domestically but I think Taylor will have to force the issue with most of them. I don't think many of them will be too keen to offer him a shot tbh. We'll see what way he goes after this next guy. He only fought a few weeks ago as well so it's good to keep active.

If he stops this guy quick they should push for Nurse/Catterall/Ohara/Davies Jnr fights.

Or at least someone just below that level, any suggestions?

Lenny Daws, Willie Limond or Glen Foot?

Limond makes the most sense.

He should be fighting him instead of this Joubert bloke.

Limond is well past it. He'd be nothing more than fodder and a decent name on Taylor's record. I really like Limond and wouldn't like to see him pummelled. Is he still firing or is he concentrating on his promotional company now?

I thought his last opponent would be a breeze too so I'm not gonna judge yet, but I agree.
However if he's retiring I like the Glen Foot fight, however that won't happen.

A soft, home coming first defence.

If they are putting the brakes on then it's a acceptable opponent.
But if they want Burns by the end of the year for a world title this isn't a good enough learning fight.

He's still a better opponent than this African bloke.

I think some names would be Daws, Foot, maybe even go the Euro route and take on one of these Spanish or Italian fellas!
Him who Burns beat for title, Di Rocco?
Can't quite remember, but Yigit's title should be targeted by the end of the year for me.

He probably would Horse but as I say I've not seen the guy fight. I'm probably just letting my personal feelings get in the way when it comes to Limond. I've been a fan for years and don't really want to see him in with someone like Taylor at this stage in his career.

Same. A lot of guys seem to swerve the traditional route these days. Especially the European.

Ordinarily this would be a good fight for an 8 fight prospect, but given that he has already beat Ryan in convincing fashion and picked up the commonwealth, it is rather uninspiring.

They should have tried to get Nurse.
The Ryan win must have put him in line for the British title, not to mention that an English opponent would (I imagine) bring more fan interest north of the border.

Foot would walk into every single shot Josh throw mate that wouldn't be good to watch, Josh v Yigit the Euro champ would be an excellent fight and a good guide to Josh's full talent
Di Rocco was either shot to bits or weight drained he was shocking

This is a few rounds of the South African bloke Taylor's fighting (the white guy).

He looks decent. A lot more mobile than Dave Ryan. Looks like he moves well and has a decent tight defence. His offence is pretty sloppy though. He landed a few nice shots, particularly a hard straight right that landed flush but other than that his accuracy wasnt great.

How do you know without watching him? Boxrec isn't an accurate way to judge a fighters ability. Willie Limond was class in his day but he's well past it. Anyway I've posted video of this Joubert guy in my last post so you can have a better judgment on if he's a better opponent than Limond.

I have no interest in this African bloke.

I'm not going to waste my time watching this nobody.

Limond is a much bigger name and it's a far more interesting fight.

It's free on channel 5. You would deny yourself a night of free boxing just because you don't agree with one of the opponents?

Sorry, silly question....

Fair enough. The footage is poor quality anyway

Limond in his day was a very crafty boxer. Good footwork, and a very good counter puncher. Much better than this African bloke. The thing is though bigger name or not he's way past it and I wouldn't want to see him take a pasting. Which he probably would. No need for that fight at all

I'll watch him vs Taylor, but if I missed that night of boxing, so what?

The card doesn't look at all interesting at the moment.

Why should boxing fans feel grateful for any old rubbish thrown our way?

Boxing is boring right now and this awful fight is a part of the problem.

It's boxing on terrestrial tv. The more the better IMO. What else are you going to be doing on a Friday night? Sorting your tinned foods in to alphabetical order and ironing your Y-fronts?

I don't have much interest in prospects vs nobodies.

It's pathetic that so many boxers can fight for over a decade and only have a handful of interesting fights.

Garbage like this should not be supported.
