Jermall Charlo Vacates IBF Title - Middleweight Move Ahead

Post by Enlightened-One »

"Jermall Charlo Vacates IBF Title - Middleweight Move Ahead"

"Jermall Charlo vacates IBF 154lbs strap as he gets ready to move up to the fiercely competitive middleweight division.

"A shark tank of a division headed by one of the world’s most feared fighters - Gennady Golovkin.

"His brother and WBC super-welterweight champion Jermell Charlo (28-0-13KO) looks like he is staying at 154lbs for the time being, so the brothers will not now be in a position where they will ever have to compete in a unification bout."

Thoughts? :-?

Just shows you how flimsy world titles are these days when fighters either vacate or allow themselves to be stripped without much fuss, not to mention the amount of fighters who fail to make weight, is it an American thing??

Fighters would rather be multiple weight world champs these days rather than the No1 in one weight class which is a shame, if Jermall hadn't been champ yet i'd imagine he'd be hanging around 154 a little longer

I was positive about him moving up but you're right, he had a host of unification bouts aside from his brother. Let's hope he's not scared to fight GGG in the next 12 months.

Al Haymon is working his pawns - he and Charlo are hoping Jacobs beats GGG - if the unexpected happens it's Charlo vs Jacobs -

The 6’0” Jermall Charlo has been speculating about a proposed move to the middleweight since early 2015. In fact, prior to his IBF title reign, he was often known to rehydrate above 170lbs by the time he entered the ring… and at least eight of his bouts have been technically fought at the higher weight class.

There's a video on YouTube of Jermall sparring Erislandy Lara and he looks significantly the bigger man so it's no real surprise that he's moving to 160. With GGG holding 3 of the 4 belts though I'm not sure who Charlo will be targeting as I can't see him jumping straight in with Golovkin anytime soon, hopefully I'm wrong.

Top 2 IBF contenders at 154 are Tony Harrison and Jarret Hurd who were already scheduled to fight this month, so I presume that will now be the for the vacant world title.

Lemieux/Stevens winner would be a nice test for Jermall but I have the feeling his career would be similar to Quillin or Wilder. He would fight lots of bums till somehow GGG loses his belts or moves up then Jermall would fight for a title , etc.

It could be Charlo vs Jacobs in any case or Charlo vs Quillin. Wade and Khytrov are also Haymon fighters.

160 is a shark tank? Umm what. Compared to 154? GGG is basically the entire 160 lb division. Who else is there? Lemieux? Jacobs? That's about it. Division sucks. Deverychenko and Wade are in the top 5 for Christ sake.

154 has Andrade. Canelo. Lara. Fight them.

160 is garbage.

He doesn't want to fight his brother and his gym mate Lara. What else is there? Canelo is not coming back. If Golovkin wasn't a MW, that division would suddenly seem exciting with many good fighters of comparable level. It is Gennady's "fault" that they don't look so good. The same situation is in Loma's previous and current weight classes. The other guys are good, but he makes them look average.

Jermall and Andrade should square off at 160 lbs. Both are big guys. :OhYes:

I'm glad he's vacated immediately instead of holding out until last minute to decide, like Brook did. Bet Kell's gutted now though, couple of days after agreeing to fight Spence, his world title at the next weight up becomes vacant

Wade isnt a legit top 5 MW at all, and even before the GGG blowout I didnt see anyone acting like he was close to it; him being at #6 is just a BoxRec fuckk up. BoxRec also has old man Bundradge at #4 in the apparently loaded 154 division.

By the way diddy, why did you hype up Julian Williams, yet give no mention to someone like Sulecki, presumably lumping him in with your everyone else who sucks group at 160? What did Williams do to seperate himself from that type of guy (let alone BJS, Lee, or N'Dam) at MW?

You're garbage and make no damned sense whatever ... Billy Joe Saunders is still undefeated and a big Middleweight.. Chris Eubank has come WAY up in the last 2 years to be a very formidable Middleweight.. Daniel Jacobs is another big and powerful 6-footer with terrific boxing ability and punching power.. After the Chavez fight Canelo will a Middleweight.. With Jermall Charlo outgrowing 154, and coming up to 160 well -- the division is loaded.

good. charlo understood that now middleweight is the division to be. canelo is moving up, chavez is already in super middleweight/middleweight weight, than obviously ggg and jacobs, great division, keeps getting better.

Exactly. And if you go a bit further (Top-15) you've got guys like Heiland (only known for KO of Macklin), Ishe Smith, old man Soliman, or Brian Rose. Its pretty much horrible. Even 168 looks better, with guys like Jack, DeGale, Ramirez, Groves, Chudinov, Dirrell...

Groves, Chudinov, and Dirrell eh?? ... Not real formidable boxers I'd say ... And DeGale looked like crap getting punched around and beaten up in his last couple fights... So you're full of potatoes

The only reason 168 looks better is that they don't have their own Golovkin. When he moves up, they won't look good.

Yup, first lets see if Jermall is gonna test himself against Lemieux/Stevens winner or he'll take Quillin / Wilder route.

He could fight those guys, but I strongly doubt that Haymon plans to put him against close to prime Golovkin. They know that Golovkin has only months left at MW, and if not, they will keep postponing the encounter until GGG grows old.

True, but I have the feeling GGG will retire after he gets all the belts since I don't see Canelo or even Jermall fighting GGG when still he's at the top of his game.
