Hughie Fury's trainer and father could be denied NZ visa for Parker fight

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Immigration New Zealand has indicated Hughie Fury's trainer and father Peter will need a special exemption and character waiver due to his extensive criminal history to enter this country should the WBO title fight against Joseph Parker be held here in April.

Parker's promoters, Duco Events, are seeking sponsorship and working towards hosting the 25-year-old's first world title defence in New Zealand against undefeated Brit Fury, cousin of former heavyweight champion Tyson.

But there could be a major hitch in the works for the Fury camp, with Immigration New Zealand confirming Peter would need to jump through several hoops to be granted a visa.

Peter is a convicted drugs baron who stalked Manchester's notorious underworld for decades.

He was jailed for 10 years in 1995 for possession and intent to supply amphetamine – only to continue orchestrating his business from behind bars. In 2008 he received another two years for drug-related money laundering.

Five years ago a court ordered him to pay back the assets and funds he had hidden from the court.

In 2013, Peter's application for a visa into the United States was knocked back by authorities due to those two prison terms and he was forced to watch Tyson Fury's fight against Steve Cunningham from Canada, rather than work from his nephew's corner at New York's Madison Square Garden's.

Immigration New Zealand is yet to receive an application from Peter to come here in April but pointed to section 15 of the act which states:

"Any person sentenced to a term of imprisonment of five years or more, or to a term of imprisonment of 12 months or more in the last 10 years, is an "excluded person", and may not be granted a visa unless granted a special direction.

"In accordance with immigration instructions, certain criminal convictions will mean that the person is normally ineligible for the grant of visa unless a character waiver is granted. When considering a character waiver, each application is considered on its individual merits and taking into account factors such as the seriousness of an offence, number of offences and how long ago the event/s occurred."

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, a convicted rapist, was denied a visa to enter New Zealand in 2012.

Peter does not hide from his chequered past.

"What is prison like — well, when you go to the toilet, you just see the toilet and you don't see the vermin down below it," he once told BS.

"There's a life down there that you don't want to see — that's where you are in prison. You're in hell on earth. That man sat next to you can easily put a knife through your neck because they're in for life and are in despair with nothing to lose."

"Going inside made me realise what life was about and what I was missing. It was like being in the dark for 24 hours, people have no idea what it's like, but you move on, learn from it and it makes you a humble person. They say that some bad things can turn into good things. Unless you've had that experience, you don't realise how good life can be."

No way. This was Parker's plan all along. He knew Hughie's trainer would have visa issues and that Hughie will not fight w/o him in his corner. This was all posturing from Parker.

So are you suggesting that Parker is trying to duck Fury?

I think the chances are higher that they will accept to fight in the UK, Parker isn't Wilder.

It's insane, isn't it? It's not like he will be moving there and setting up a drug syndicate. Let these guys travel with their fighters; if you're so worried then keep an eye on his for the week (or less) that he's there. Problem solved.

If Tyson didn't get the visa I doubt Peter will. Tyson is a name which usually helps in these matters.

It's a shame but got to respect the rules in these instances imo. Maybe don't get sent to prison for 12 years? That's the best way to avoid these things!

Not really. But he is the best, and hugest ranked (15 at the time of the bout) Parker has faced thus far.
I think the fight should be in the UK, and I'm a Kiwi, if only to try and raise the public knowledge past 'Joseph who?'

Id say hes at least as good as anyone Wilder has faced, and a 24-year-old Parker fought him after 3 years and 10 months pro.

And how do you know the fight wont go ahead without Peter? That's a lot of money for Hughie to turn down, and Parker looked vulnerable last fight. What better risk-reward opportunities are there for Fury?

Perhaps Hughie is also more stable than Tyson, and wouldnt be so affected by not having Peter there. They can still have a full camp together.

Hughie doesn't like Boxing... He's big, tall, and strong, and fairly athletic, but he's not into Boxing in the slightest... If you like Boxing it's fun and you love to go the the gym and practice your skills and spar and get better and better.. If you're dragged into the sport by your family, and don't like it that much it's a real struggle -- but it's still a good livelihood.. He just needs to buckle down and learn it.. He was cherry-picked by Parker and he should be insulted.

Hughie needs to work on his jab more than anything.. He has very good height and reach and quick feet.. But no footwork, timing, or jab.. He basically has a short right and that's the only shot he's got besides a half-assed short hook.. He needs a rangy straight right and a right counter, hooks and uppercuts and body shots.. If he picked up a real good trainer who could show him the science, his interest might perk up.

I think it is a mismatch whether his trainer is there or not. There are others much more deserving of a world heavyweight title shot rather than the cousin of Tyson Fury. He's not top 10 or even top 20.

..I don't know how Hughie got to the top of anyone's rankings to get the title shot in the first place..are we talking about nepotism in sport? ..can't say I think highly of Parker either though...as for the rules? New Zealand should stick to them..

That fight won't happen in the UK. Hughie has no fan base at all over here.

I have seen nothing to suggest Hughie would beat Takam though. The fact he has been mandated is an absolute disgrace.

People outside of the U.K. Probably are not aware that the Furys ( Hughie and Tyson) were judged by UK Anti Doping to have tested positive for a PED ( Nandrolone) in February 2015.

They had a hearing two weeks ago and there is still no verdict and some suggest that Hughie is currently serving a silent ban as he has not had a fight scheduled since this was made public.
