Canelo and Chavez make sensational bet for May 6th’s Mexican showdown

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

After a fairly respectful two days of the media tour to promote May 6th’s big fight in Las Vegas, tensions flared between Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr when the pair made a daring bet on Univision's Despierta América programme.

Both fighters exchanged verbals before Canelo and Chavez shook on a double or nothing agreement which adds more spice to the already intriguing Mexican derby.

Alvarez proposed to up the ante after seeing Chavez state he was going to knock the flame haired star out in eight rounds: “I saw him in a video saying that I have not fought with anyone, if he is so sure that he is going to win me, that he is going to knock me out in eight rounds, I bet his bag that he does not beat me!”

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya took to his social media to confirm the bet was on..

I have a hard time believing Chavez would give up his payday with a bet like this.

Will he have something to bet on? He might lose the money after the weigh-in.

There'd be no reason for him not to come in weighing well over the contracted weight if this bet is true.

But I would assume that if Junior came in well over the agreed upon weight, then Canelo could pull out.

Therefore no payday for Chavez and he probably gets sued by GBP. Shades of Corrales-Casamayor.

Junior will make the weight with no problems. He's just a big middleweight.

If he's had problemas in the past, it's simply because Junior hasn't worked very hard in training.

He can be a wee bit lazy.

But with all the eyes of Mexico glued to this fight, Chavez will be fully motivated. Pride will kick in.

He'll train his ass off. 164.5 will be a breeze.

NO way this bet is legit. I really do hope that jr. takes this fight seriously enough in camp and can make weight. This fight is going to be TOO big to cancel the night before as a results from the scale. Canelo would be smart to cancel the fight if Jr. comes in too big. But a lot of money will be lost and more and more court proceedings. Not what boxing needs.

Can Jr.'s body get down that low anymore? That's the problem.

If Chavez does make the weight, he will be so weight drained the fight won't be competitive at all. If it is, it only shows that Canelo isn't as good as many think. Chavez was shut out and quit on his stool against Fonfara. He hasn't been able to make it below 168 in five years, so now the weight being 164.5, the fight is a joke imo.

Chavez Jr couldn't convincingly beat Brian Vera,
and there are people pumped to watch this fight.

Why? Based on what?

Chavez Jr getting big fights like this is worse than Khan getting big fights.
It's pure stupidity at this point that someone would pay top PPV money/top gate ticket prices to watch Chavez Jr fight.

Also, if you are a fan of Chavez Jr, what is that based on?
I actually want to understand your point of view.

Is he tough? No. He complains to referees more than ANY fighter I've ever seen.
Is he a good fighter? No.
Is he dedicated?
Does he respect the fans? No.
Does he respect the sport? No.

Seriously, I'm not being sarcastic. Please let me know.
I just can't see the appeal of this kid.

I'm guessing much of his fandom relates to his father.

Would you rewatch 12.round Chavez-Martinez, and you will have to admit you are wrong (Chavez is a good, tough fighter).

That will be almost five years from the time he steps in with Canelo.
In that time we witnessed Vera, Vera and Fonfara ... 5 shitty fights in 4 years.
How about we put Juan Diaz in a PPV fight?

People just want Canelo beaten.
People wanted Floyd and Manny beaten and threw names like Margarito, Cotto, Bradley, Maidana, Marquez, etc.
People want Canelo beaten and are watching Smith, Khan, Chavez Jr.?

Sorry, it's not the haters. If it were up to US, it would been Canelo Vs Charlo.

Canelo is not good enough to warrant hater support.
He just has a rabid teenage girl fan base who love him because he's celebrity.

He's not a good fighter by virtue of being able to hit Martinez in the round when Martinez deliberately stood in close to trade with him.
