On this day in History March 14 1980

Post by zurdo »

In 1980, a Polish airliner crashed while making an emergency landing near Warsaw, killing all 87 people aboard, including 22 members of a U.S. amateur boxing team.

Including. Coach
Tom"Sarge" Johnson (brother of Marvin)
Lemuel Steeples ( a terrific amateur boxer)
Andre McCoy
Paul Palamino (brother of Carlos)
Chuck Robinson.

I remember this incident well...

Well remembered.

I seem to recall that Tony Tucker was meant to be on that plane but was late getting to the airport and missed the plane.

Tragic. They showed recently on ESPN profiles Carlos Palomino talking about his then 18-year old brother being in the incident.

Think it might have been Greg Page actually.

He was always late for meetings etc and his mother always said he would be late for his own funeral.

Page actually turned pro in 1979, so it was probably Tucker, and I think he actually mentioned this years ago.
