Round-By-Round - Gavin McDonnell vs. Rey Vargas - February 25th 2017
Re: Round-By-Round - Gavin McDonnell vs. Rey Vargas - February 25th 2017
Ian John Lewis! Jesus wept! What a fuckin plum!
Vargas was far more fluent and relaxed from the off. Great movement and boxing on the back foot. Good selection of shots and mixed it up well. Gavin is a good little fighter and showed some real toughness in there. He didn't enjoy the same advantages over Vargas his brother does against most at Bantam. Good action though. Well don't to both guys.

But McDonnell lost possibly the first 6 or 7. He finished the fight well though I was rooting for him but a draw it was not.LancashireLoyal wrote:IJL knows whats up..![]()

Coldwell biting there, definitely feeling the heat
Re: Round-By-Round - Gavin McDonnell vs. Rey Vargas - February 25th 2017
Sky stop trying to promote the Bellew / Haye fight ringside through this one, completely no relevance

Victor Loughlins face told a story when IJL scorecard got read out.Stuarty30 wrote:Ian John Lewis! Jesus wept! What a fuckin plum!

I had GMcD winning R5, 9,10,11 and drawing 8th.
116-113 - surprised how close I had it; RV was different class, but McD's engine and desire won him 4 rounds.
Fantastic achievement to go the distance in a WT fight from GMcD. I remember Leigh Wood boxing his ears off for 5 rounds..

Brave effort from McDonnell who was simply outclassed by a superior fighter. No disgrace there. The disgrace was IJL's fantasy land scorecard and, yet again, a Sky commentary team cheerleading display rather than a realistic analysis.

If you go the distance in a WT fight and are coming on strong at the end, AND have a lot of room for improvement - why can't he call himself world level ?

I instantly turned the TV off.rossij8 wrote:Sky stop trying to promote the Bellew / Haye fight ringside through this one, completely no relevance
Said it the other week Dave Coldwell is going to take a lot of Ls this year like Gallagher did last year.
Thing is I actually think Coldwell is a decent trainer.

IJL been on the crackpipe again? 118-110 Vargas for me, I gave the last 2 rounds to Vargas but McDonnell did press, I just thought he was picked off but I can accept a 116-112 card maybe, either way Vargas was a clear winner,, there's a lot to like about him, uses his legs well but always moves to his left still he was able to slip Gavin most of the time, he uses jab well too and has a solid right hand and digs to the body well for a big fella, he does look vulnerable when pressed though and doesn't like to be roughed up so I can see better opponents than McDonnell having success against him
Full credit to McDonnell though he gave it his all, he just wasn't good enough to beat Vargas and his legs were too slow, he has some engine though and can take a helluva shot, no fault in his effort

The commentary didn't seem too far off reality.straali wrote:Brave effort from McDonnell who was simply outclassed by a superior fighter. No disgrace there. The disgrace was IJL's fantasy land scorecard and, yet again, a Sky commentary team cheerleading display rather than a realistic analysis.

Think Sky were pretty clear that RV was well ahead on the cards throughout ?

Think Leo Santa Cruz will just have blocked Cyclone Promotions number from his phone after seeing that IJL scorecard.
Re: Round-By-Round - Gavin McDonnell vs. Rey Vargas - February 25th 2017
Because he just lost clearly to a fighter who isn't even a proven world level fighter himself.skanksta wrote:Well...

How is IJL still allowed to be involved in top level boxing? Does anyone with any influence actually bother to pay attention to officials?

By the way, shout-out to the judge who scored it 117-111....that's former BoxRec regular Musashi

Boxers coming to the UK from other countries need to make sure Ian John-Lewis isn't working their fight, either as a referee or judge.straali wrote:Ian John Lewis card is, quite simply, a disgrace. Laughable nonsense and a discredit to UK boxing and officialdom.

IJL needs a break. You just cannot score that fight a draw. Not even close. I had Vargas a clear winner.
What a tough, brave lad Gavin McDonnell is though. Gave it all he had and showed a rock solid chin and heart. He can come again.

Sky were actually ok during the fight - no slagging off on here yet of the main commentatorskanksta wrote:straali wrote:Brave effort from McDonnell who was simply outclassed by a superior fighter. Absolutely shocked at a British judge on a math room show giving favouritism to a math room fighter...
