Golovkin Still Wants Mayweather at 154, Has No Respect For Canelo

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

"Golovkin Still Wants Mayweather at 154, Has No Respect For Canelo"

During a recent appearance on ESPN's First Take, IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (36-0, 34 KOs) explained that he is still very interested in fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) at a catch-weight of 154 or the full middleweight limit of 160.

And Golovkin also had a few verbal jabs at Saul "Canelo" Alvarez - who GGG described as a "selfish" person.

Golovkin does not believes that he's too big for Mayweather, and explained that there is a big difference between going down in weight for Mayweather and refusing to fight Canelo last year at 155.

“I’m not too big [for Mayweather]. My [weight].... 30 days before my fight, I’m 165 [pounds] after [drinking] water. Yesterday after sparring, I was 164. Especially for Floyd - I’ll go to 154 or 160 if he wants. This is a dream fight," Golovkin said.

"There is a big difference between Floyd and Canelo. Floyd is Floyd. Floyd is the best pound-for-pound. Canelo, he’s done nothing. I talked to him just last year [and told him] 'I want this fight. I need this fight.’ It’s too much [talking]. I’m tired of this talking too much [about this fight]. I not respect [Canelo] because he’s like a selfish."

Golovkin also ruled out the possibility of heading up to super middleweight or light heavyweight, at least right now.

"I'm not too big for 160. My weight I told you is 165 just 30 days before the fight. It was 164 yesterday. 160 is very good [for me]. 154 is a very good category for me. 168 or 175, yeah if I have a big fight or big money fight or big unification fight, of course ."

If 154lbs is a really good category for Gennady Golovkin, why did he refuse to consider facing Cotto and Canelo a couple of years ago at 155lbs?

Why did GGG initially refuse to consider competing at 157lbs when he was originally offered the Brook fight six months earlier than when he eventually faced him at 160lbs?

Golovkin has persistently maintained that 154lbs was a really good weight division for him, but then complains that he can’t get fights, even though common sense dictates that if he can make 154lbs very well, then 155lbs should be easier.

If GGG insists on facing smaller men, but he refuses to compromise, then does he not deserve some measure of criticism for failing to call Canelo’s bluff when the 155lbs stipulation was originally requested a couple of years ago?

since when is facing lemieaux and jacobs small men?

he didnt want canelo or cotto at 154 cause those guys bring him 10-15 milllion and him being weight drained, since fightnight he is a huge middleweight. but for mayweather he would make 30-40 million and this kind of money would make him being okay being weight drained. also he could lose this one at 154, cause floyd has much better footwork/footspeed than ggg and a weight drained ggg would probably gas out, not be able to chase the more athletic, better footwork that floyd has over him. at middleweight it would be a big favour for ggg, since he would have all his power, all his energie and floyd would be slower with extra weight. but since floyd is the money attraction and a side ggg has to go down, also floyd got up 5 divisions and ggg always stayed at middleweight so it is fair that ggg goes down, floyd went up enough. its about money, if there would be a money attraction like mayweather at super middleweight he would go up at sm, but since ward, degale or ramirez bring litle audience, litle cash compared to floyd there is no reason, except fame.

But there are loads of videos of Golovkin, Loeffler and Sanchez stating that he would only be willing to face Andre Ward at 164lbs?

Did you know that when you posted this comment?

The details in your post contradict Golovkin's own claims.

154 is not a good category for him which is why he would only do it for Mayweather which they have been clearly saying for a long time.

Isn't there a quote of him saying this in the first post of this thread? I thought I'd also posted a video of him or Sanchez saying this.

Even if he can't make 154lbs that easily (since he certainly can for Mayweather), he still could have earned a career high purse a couple of years or so ago by calling Canelo's bluff when he originally stated his demands of a 155lbs catchweight stipulation in order to face GGG.

I call bullsh!t. GingerHead and Cotto demanding a catchweight to defend their pilfered MW belts is not the same as meeting FMJ at 154. Just stop with your lame criticisms that selectively leave out the most important aspects of the situation.

GingerHead is a chickensh!t and Cotto won the MW title from a Monty Python version of a champion (no legs).

We know for certain that Team Golovkin had previously gone on record, which can be viewed in multiple videos, by stating that he was willing to compete in a 164lbs catchweight bout to face Andre Ward. So GGG can't dislike catchweights so much, can he?

In regards to my questioning Team GGG’s reluctance for the last two or three years or so to engage in bouts against big name rivals at 155lbs, is mainly based on watching multiple videos like this… and after viewing them, do you not find it confusing that he refrained from calling Canelo’s bluff for the last couple of years by taking the fight at the lower weight?

Is my opinion about Golovkin refraining from taking on the likes of Cotto and Canelo at 155lbs two or three years ago really so “lame” and “leaving out the most important aspects of the situation”?

Do any of those videos suggest that Golovkin would struggle to make 154lbs and that Mayweather would be the only fighter he'd consider dropping weight for?

He wouldn't "struggle", but it would take a significant effort and will give an advantage to his opponent.

Provide a quote which suggests that he would go down for somebody else beside Mayweather. What year is that quote from ?

So within the last twelve months, are you seriously telling me that you've never heard Golovkin or Sanchez state that a fight at 154lbs could be made for Pacquiao?

Seriously?

You keep setting me targets and I keep shooting them down.

You may claim that my opinions are "lame", but all I've done today is post videos of Team GGG's very own words. Does that mean they're "lame" also?

It makes sense to want a fight with mayweather at a catchweight and to a lesser extent, Pacman. Mayweather is the golden ticket in terms of money to be made and exposure, something Golovkin could benefit from. Not only, Mayweather is/was the pound for pound number 1. Testing himself against someone of that calibre is a fighters dream, even if you need to compromise yourself to "even" some odds.

Fighting Canelo at 155 is a different matter. As a fan I want to see the best possible fight, I want to see the best possible Golovkin and for that matter, the best Canelo as we know he can make the weight comfortably. Golovkin compromising himself for a middleweight unification that by all rights should be at 160 is a mistake. Golovkin would pretty much be handing his testicals to golden boy straight off the bat in terms of negotiating. It's golden boy, the weight wouldn't be the only demand.

Regardless, Canelo has moved up in weight like he had to and should of prior to Smith. GGG is soon to break Bhops middleweight defences and dominate a division like no other champion today, this is great and he has a decent opponent in front of him for March.

How many title defences has Golovkin actually made of his WBA world title where he held that organisations most senior belt?

Do we only recognise the WBA's "regular" and "interim" titles for our favourite fighters, but dismiss the value of the same belts if owned by anyone else?

GGG may technically break Hopkins' record, but I'm not sure if he would receive universal praise for this accomplishment, despite being an utterly fantastic fighter, since ten of his title fights came against men ranked outside the top-ten of the 160lb weight division.

Yes you're correct, technically he may break Hopkins record, an impressive feat.

Middleweight king Gennady Golovkin wants a fight with a 40 year old welterweight! :oo

OK, I know it isn't quite that simple, but that's what it translates into ultimately.

I love Golovkin as a fighter, but he really needs to leave the Mayweather sleeping dog to lie.

If Mayweather decides he wants to return & jump up, that's his call, but there is no way that the most destructive & feared MW for a generation should be calling out a 40 year old welterweight that hasn't fought in the best part of 2 years.
