Argentina's Horacio Accavallo came from behind tonight and won the world flyweight championship with a 15-round split decision over Japan's Katsuyoshi Takayama.
Referee Nicholas Pope scored it 73-69 and Judge Eloy Gonzalcs 74-66 for Accavallo, but Japanese Ko Toyama gave it to Takayama 70-71.
The United Press International card had it 70-66 for Accavalio.
Accavallo will be recognized as the world flyweight champion by the World Boxing Association and the World Boxing Council, but he must defend against Hiroyuki Ebihara, the WBA’s top contender, within 120 days.
Accavallo, a veteran of 88 fights, was a 6-4 favorite to defeat the 22-year-old Japanese, but Takayama surprised the crowd of 10,000 by taking the offensive at the opening bell and maintaining a lead through the first 12 rounds.

TOKYO (UPI) -
Horacio Accavallo of Argentina finally holds the world flyweight title at 31, the age most boxers are thinking about retiring.
Accavallo won the vacant title Tuesday night by pounding out a 15-round split decision over Japan's Katsuyoshi Takayama, who is nine years younger than the Argentine boxer.
Accavallo still does not hold international recognition as flyweight champion, however. He is recognized by the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council, but Italian Salvatore Burruni is recognized by the European Boxing Union.

The World Boxing Council plans to ignore Walter McGowan's claim to the world fly-weight boxing title, Luis Spota, president of the council, announced in Mexico City last night.
"As far as we are concerned Horacio Acavallo, of Argentina, is the one and only fly-weight champion of the world," said Spota.
He recalled that the council disqualified Salvatore Burruni, of Italy, as champion last November when he falled to meet the council's demand to give Japan's Hiroyuki Ebihara a title fight.
Very strange
"The Burruni - McGowan fight was wrongly advertised as a title match by the promoter, since Burruni had no title to lose," claimed Spota.
"We do not plan to arrange any fight between McGowan and Acavallo. We do not plan to do anything about McGowan at all.
