Carl Thompson vs David Haye


The wily ex champ Thompson showing the young, green, undefeated KO artist Haye some new tricks, rode out the early storm and stopped Haye in 5, Haye came out of the traps flying landing bombs on Thompson and it actually looked like he might get Carl out of there early, I think Haye probably should've been credited with a KD after Thompson touched down but the ref ignored it and didn't even wipe Thompson's gloves, still Haye kept coming hurting Thompson with the big right hand especially but in the 4th Thompson started to settle into it as Haye slowed the pace after putting a lot into the 1st few rounds, then finally Thompson put Haye down with a right hand in the 5th and Haye never recovered he looked spent, another right hand wobbled Haye and as he sagged into the ropes the towel came in and Thompson pulled off an excellent win even better in hindsight

I know a lot of people reckon Haye gassed after putting so much into getting Thompson out of there early and although I think its true to an extent, I think the main reason Haye took his foot off the gas was that he knew Thomspson wasn't gonna fold easily and Haye hit a mental block as this had never happened before and the drop in his workrate allowed Thomspon to come forward and get the TKO as Carl could bang himself

A great win for the likeable Carl that ensures he's not forgotten and he remains the only man to have stopped David.
I actually think a Carl T thread might well be in order

But also a vital learning experience for David too.....there are going to be nights when I don't find a KO shot, someone starts punching back and a fight needs to be won via the long route.

And Carl's little lesson came at arguably the right time for David; young enough to adapt, take some advice and physically bounce straight back.

Funny I watched this monday....I remember watching it at the time..I was a big fan of Thompson of the time and wasn't a fan of Hayes arrogance. CAT was one of the ultimate blood and guts warriors. Gosh how many life and death matches did he have?? I remember that Sebastian Rothmann ko when he was on the brink...incredible.

Ive never seen Thompson in a bad fight, the Sellers fight was bonkers too

Yes I watched that recently too - a bad ending for CAT - I remember the Rochigianni fight too where his shoulder went...jeezzz...my late father was a big fan too...the blue collar underdog type...

I have been transferring my old tapes onto DVD - it has taken about 4 years so far - in that time technology has moved on and DVD''s look like they will probably become obsolete... anyway - I found some early fights of Piper - he was a brutal puncher - and one of the wins is like 12 seconds....amazing...and that included the 10 count !

George Foreman vs Michael Moorer

Incredible achievement for Foreman at 45 to become the oldest world champ ever and with such a conclusive ending, the right hand just thudded into Moorer and he was down for about a minute, Moorer was in control all the way through he landed solid jabs and right hooks from his southpaw stance but he always stayed in the pocket too long for my liking even early doors he allowed Foreman to land but George was just never busy enough and Moorer must've been widely ahead, I seen Foreman's previous attempt recently at becoming the oldest champ when he fought Holyfield 3 years before, he was a outclassed a lot more that night and hurt more, against Moorer his punches landed % would've been a lot higher I would've imagined

Please ...one of my all time favourite fighters. My father's too...I watched so many of his fights live ..I must have had ten heart attacks just watching his matches!!!
Blue collar, likeable, humble, never-say-die attitude, physical adonis, blood and guts warrior, comeback kid, knockout puncher....and looked a bit like a young little Richard

Archie Moore vs Joey Maxim 1

Tremendous effort from Archie at the age of 36 in 162nd contest, a title he held for almost a decade

I scored it a virtual shutout just like the 2 judges, no idea what Referee Harry Kessler was watching to score it 76-74

There's something about Archie I love watching, that I can't quite put my finger on. He's not exceptional at anything but he just looks a natural fighter, so comfortable in the ring and always trying to work out his opponent. Nothing looks rehearsed in the gym.

Uncanny how Tyson like he was in terms of movement (obviously Tyson was Patterson like) But the shared trainer obviously having a massive impact on their respective styles.

Floyd Patterson vs Ingemar Johansson 1

I've watched the 3rd round before but never the full fight.
Floyd never looked himself throughout the fight, was there something wrong with him in the build up?
He looked subdued in the first couple rounds but watching the 3rd round was particularly bizarre. After the first knockdown he gets up and goes to walk to his corner and gets nailed by Johansson from the side.

The spring was back in his step and the quickness back in his punching.
Used the jab very well in this on, throwing it in 2's and 3's to back Johansson up and really limited anything coming back from the Swede
The 2 left hooks that dropped him in the 5th were viscous and again, once he had him going and went for the kill, it was like watching Mike Tyson in B&W in there, the way he went after his man

Pernell Whitaker vs Julio Cesar Chavez

I was surprised how Sweet Pea was much stronger than JCC on the inside exchanges. Chavez couldn't bully him at all. It was one of boxing's greatest performances of my lifetime. A true all-time great masterpiece.

I think it was a good match Tomasino....Thompson had lost a couple of big matches and had around 10 wins...and Piper was a 10-0 undefeated prospect...do you mean because of size difference??
