Greatest Fighter From Thailand
Greatest Fighter From Thailand
Crease's Bantamweight rankings game got me thinking about this, and it's a question that I don't believe has an easy answer. So who is the greatest Thai fighter of all time ? Old timers may say Pone Kingpetch, or more recent oldtimers might give the nod to Chartchai Chionoi. Then of course there's Khaosai Galaxy the only fighter from Thailand in the IBHOF (hopefully that changes soon) and of course more recently we've had Veeraphol Sahaprom, Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, Chatchai Sasakul, or maybe someone I haven't even considered.

Kidding aside, Venice Borkorsor was the first fighter I thought of when I saw the subject matter.
Re: Greatest Fighter From Thailand
Sasakul was my favorite fighter... not the best.. but had tons of skill... too bad he ran into Manny and then was frozen out of a meaningful fight for so many years..
Re: Greatest Fighter From Thailand
In the entire history of boxing, I'm wondering how many fighters if any turned in a better performance in there 4th pro fight than Veeraphol Sahaprom did. I'm guessing he had to have had a Muay Thai career, but that's still amazing.
Re: Greatest Fighter From Thailand
I'm quite surprized I was the only one so far to list him in Creases Bantamweight game. I don't know a huge amount about the weight class and opted to go with largely recognisable names but I though he was a shoo in for the top 10 to be honestSeamus wrote:In the entire history of boxing, I'm wondering how many fighters if any turned in a better performance in there 4th pro fight than Veeraphol Sahaprom did. Pone Kingpetch is one Thailander who's often forgotten...
I wasn't impressed with Pone's boxing or punching ability at all, but he put everything into every fight.. For a little guy he had an impressive resume of victims, beating Fighting Harada, Pascual Perez, and Hiroyuki Ebihara.. He lost a lot too; I specifically remember the hammering Pone took from outstanding Italian boxer Salvatore Burruni, who was one of my favorite boxers of all time.. That fight essentially ended Pone's career. He had a couple of meaningless fights after that and quit.

Regards Burruni, I'm sure Horse put one of his fights with Walter McGowan on one of the UK boxing history threads as a supplementary bout. Don't think I watched it, but I might go back and do so now

I'm a recent convert, but I can't see any other Thai fighter turning in a performance like Venice, smashing Betulio Gonzalez to bits and coming up to bantam and beating Rafael Herrera like a drum. thats Betulio Gonzalez and Rafael Herrera

I'd not even heard of Borkhasor U till a couple of years ago on here. What a beast he was...him and Galaxy were certainly ripped beyond the norm for their weight. PEDs are widely available in Thai pharmacies...
