He's had a very frustrating career. I've been a huge detractor of Brook on here because he's chased Khan, and gone upto GGG which I think was beyond pointless. The division has been wide open the last couple of years and I think he's chosen the wrong fights. Brook is very talented, power in his shots, a great variety, and he looks classy in there, reminds me of a young De La Hoya at his best. But he's not been in it to be the best, he's been aiming for the money fights. He could have, with the right fights, made a real claim to be the best in the division. I think he'd give Thurman a much tougher fight than Garcia did tonight. His career has been a disappointment so far.davie wrote:I think it depends on whether he can make it back down to 147TheDarkDestroyer wrote:He's done at WW imo. If it's not Khan next he'll move up. why not???
I think it'll be a huge challenge but he's had plenty of time to work his way down since the GGG fight. He was targeting Khan, so 147 has always been the plan and with a couple months to go yet, there's no reason he can't make the limit for Spence
If he can be comfortable at the weight, I give him a really good shout against Spence. Chances are, win lose or draw, he's going to be back chasing the Khan fight again though which will end up costing him big fights again.

My criticism hasn't even been because I dislike him, it's because I think he's so talented. He's wasted a career for me.davie wrote:Can't argue with thatTheDarkDestroyer wrote:He's had a very frustrating career. Not sure I'd go as far as say he wasted a careerTheDarkDestroyer wrote:My criticism hasn't even been because I dislike him, it's because I think he's so talented. He's wasted a career for me.davie wrote:Can't argue with thatTheDarkDestroyer wrote:

He's had a few set backs and spent more time than he should have chasing his first title. I think the promoter is responsible for that more than anything. He wanted Khan before he got a title, which at that point can't really be criticised too much, considering the money it would generate and the fact Khan was proven world level at that point, he was the best domestic rival he could go after
The Porter win away from home was a big win and that's when we can start to criticise, his 3 defences were poor and he should have put the Khan thing to bed unless it landed on his lap. He did himself no favours chasing that.
But he's hardly wasted his career and can't be knocked for GGG, it was a gamble that didn't pay off and a brave move.
Now he's come back, tried for the Khan fight and when he could get it took the mandatory against one of the best prospects in the sport. There's plenty out there piss a career away better than that and certainly plenty of guys who take a lot less risks.
And at 30, there are still a few good optioons out there at 147 or 154lb, depending on where he decides to settle
Re: Thurman Garcia rbr
I don't know about Brook being a disappointment but the two welterweights in the ring tonight were a huge disappointment.
At worst I was expecting a good fight, at best a FOTY candidate.
What we got was a dud.
At least the judges managed to get the decision right.
Glad their was no talk of a rematch, no need to see these two in the ring together again.

I don't really disagree with a lot of that.davie wrote:Not sure I'd go as far as say he wasted a careerTheDarkDestroyer wrote:My criticism hasn't even been because I dislike him, it's because I think he's so talented. He's wasted a career for me.davie wrote:

I do disagree about GGG though. His promoter shouldn't have entertained that fight. I'm sure he was paid well but the last thing a fighter who has for a while been tight at 147 doesn't need to move up two divisions before he has to move straight back down. Especially for a fight he had no real chance of winning.
This fight with Spence is bigger for me than Porter, Porter was a great win, but he isn't as good as Spence. This is a career defining fight for Brook, and I hope the weight won't become an issue, but as I said he's been reportedly tight at the weight before and I don't think the move up will help him.
Hopefully he wins this and kicks on. He will have options either way, but a win means the Thurman fight practically makes itself, but I suspect he'll be looking more towards the Khan Pacquaio fight, and if that doesn't pan out I suspect he'll move up.
Perhaps wasted a career was harsh, handled badly is more appropriate.
Re: Thurman Garcia rbr
Brook is 36-1 and a World Welterweight Champion...hardly a waste in my view... He came over to America to fight Shawn Porter---a very risky undertaking and he secured a World Title. Considering there were Welterweights like Charley Burley who were excellent fighters and NEVER got a World Title Fight he's not doing that badly.. In Boxing you may not get the fights you want and deserve because the world isn't a fair place.
And I don't blame Brook for chasing the big money GGG fight... The end reason most boxers endure getting punched in the head repeatedly is money.

underwehlming the fight, expected more
Re: Thurman Garcia rbr
Thurman is boring.

Thurman was better.

HAHAHAHA...yeah Brook is awesome. He's going to get knocked out in 5 rounds against Spence.TheDarkDestroyer wrote:My criticism hasn't even been because I dislike him, it's because I think he's so talented. He's wasted a career for me.davie wrote:Can't argue with thatTheDarkDestroyer wrote:

Re: Thurman Garcia rbr
115-113 For Thurman.
Would have been more if he did not stop throwing few rounds too early.
I think that Thurman tried to blow out Garcia early. He then realized that he would not win that way and started to box instead.
I think in all out firefight Garcia would have won. Thurman was smart and won him on points instead.
My prediction was Garcia on points. I was bit surprised to see Thurman out boxing him.
I am glad that the judges got this one right. At least two of them did![[icon_twisted.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif)
