Didn't know Thurman-Garcia could fight as southpaws

Post by victor-romeo »

I didn't realize that Thurman and Garcia could fight as southpaws. I was perplexed by this as watched the 1st round of their fight on youtube.

I have seen Thurman fight Guerrero and Chaves and I remembered him fighting orthodox as did Garcia when I saw him fight Kahn and Mathysee.

Isn't Thurmans big punch his right hand thrown for orthodox stance?

If anyone has insight into this I would be pleased to hear it.

Did you check that the texts were right way around in the video you saw?

Some youtube videos are mirrored

Thurman switches up quite a bit... In this fight he didn't do it very much which I think is smart.

Find your best stance... I mean you already know your best stance.. If you're right handed you're usually a much better orthodox boxer.. And If you're left handed you're a much better southpaw.. Stick with that because that's the way your brain is wired from birth.. There are a few people who are equally proficient with both hands and have that wiring on both sides of their brain -- but that's like 1 in 5,000 - so it's probably not you...but it's possible.

You change up to the opposite stance while shadowboxing and bag punching occasionally.. This helps you work kinks and imperfections out of your regular stance and footwork because you have to think so much.. Say you're right-handed -- you have to think like a southpaw when you change stances and that helps you understand the angles of attack, strategies, and footwork of a southpaw better ... and that helps you defeat them. They'll move to their right and get on your left shoulder with a lot of jabs and hooks and the straight left can very tough to deal with because you're not used to the angle. You work the opposite tactics on southpaws -- but they see right-handers a lot more.

But some right-handers think "Let me use those clever southpaw tactics on right-handers" -- It's much harder for them to make that work because they don't practice that everyday and all day -- and slick right-handers have a lot of clever ways to beat inexperienced southpaws, and particularly if they're not really southpaws.. You saw that in the 2nd round of Mosley-Forrest 1.. Mosley switched up -- and after he switched back is when Forrest got an angle over his left shoulder with the right. The fight was all Forrest after that... Mosley was mentally fkkd.
