Too many Pay-Per-Views ?

Post by kbackup408 »

I think it's fair to say 2017 will be filled with PPV's and personally I think this is getting way too much

I understand some fights will not happen without the help of PPV but this is the schedule in 2017 almost one PPV per month !

March - Haye Bellew (done)
April - Joshua Klit
May - Possibly Brook Spence

What do you guys feel about this ?

Got no real problem with AJ-Wlad being on PPV. Would have liked a better undercard for Haye-Bellew. No way Brook-Spence should be PPV imo.

Also Pac/Khan in May.

Remember 20 years when money spinning mega fights that everyone knew about would happen without pay per view? Now David Haye and Tony Bellew can't box each other without it being ppv.

I've been on both sides to be honest. When I was younger I couldn't afford a full Sky package but I could, along with my mates, afford the few quid to chip in for a PPV which became a bit of an event night. Lads round, beers in, game of cards and so on. And all I needed was a freeview box.

Now I can afford the lot, so I have a full Sky package, I buy all the PPV's and I pay for BN, and I obviously would rather there were fewer fights on PPV. But in that position who wouldn't? I wish football tickets were less than they are, I'd like a day at the races to be more France levels of pricing than Britain, and as for F1, I'm glad I'm not a fan because I certainly couldn't be stumping up for that on a regular basis.

All that said, I understand why they happen. And I do wonder if they're more common these days than they were. Does anyone have any statistics about them?

Fair play mate I sit in the same boat I just find that they have over saturated the PPV market it seems any competitive fight made now seems to be premium

Agreed pal, back in the day there used to be massive viewing figures on ITV for domestic fights let alone world level

It's not even really about competitive fights. Joshua's PPV fights haven't been competitive. Haye Bellew wasn't on paper. Yet Khan Alexander, Brook Porter, Ward Kovalev, Frampton Santa Cruz, DeGale Jack? All far more competitive and none on PPV.

Truth be told, I'm sick of talking about PPV and completely past caring about it. It's obviously a con, no other sport in the UK does it, but people keep buying them so they will continue.

I buy the ones I want and disregard the ones I don't. The vast majority aren't worth buying, and it's so easy to stream these days that it's not worth worrying about - Facebook Live has completely blown the model apart. I actually had people on my Facebook on Saturday night complaining that their feeds were getting inundated with suggestions to watch a live stream of the boxing when they weren't interested in watching it!

I'll probably buy the Joshua-Klitschko fight as a few mates will want to see that and will come over to chip in. But Haye-Bellew? Brook-Gavin? Bellew-Cleverly?!? They've been royally taking boxing fans for mugs. And, unfortunately, boxing fans have obliged.

No it's not. As you say, people keep obliging. Part of the reason people pay is that they want a hassle-free experience on their no doubt expensive and massive HD screen rather than watching on a Facebook stream. I know I do.

It's only been a proper feature for a month or so and it's been ridiculously successful. You might not believe it, but I guarantee you Sky/BT/Virgin are genuinely worried about streams, and with good reason.

I've listened to Eddie Hearn talk extensively about the PPV model in an IFL interview and i belueve what he says.

The main problem with it is not Hearn nor Matchroom, it's the fact that the fighters want to earn as much money as possible, as quickly as possible. (But then who could blame them? They are the ones taking the risks)

This grab-the-money mentality can often restrict big fights from happening, just look at Khan vs Brook.

If anythibg the power of PPV is starting to serve the British publuc well, as it's bringing Gennady Golovkin and Wladimir Klitchsko to these shores.
Who knows who else will be making an appearance in the future?

I dident mind th ppvs when they first started in the uk because the cards were class with several world title fights and good match ups-- sadly that's a thing of the past with only one main fight and weak undercards. It's become a case these days of "how much money can I make without having to fight any one decent" - Joshua being the classic example up until now

Totally agree, it sickens me

And what infuriated me on Saturday was that after the injury i really wanted to hear what was going on in Haye's corner - was it his knee, was it his ankle, could he carry on, what was Tibbs saying - but all I could fvcking hear was Paulie rabbiting on incessantly.

And get rid of that useless fvcking presenter.

Can't wait til BT sport get the ball rolling and show the complacent Sky clowns how to do it.

Said this plenty.

Sky's ultimate aim is the WWE model pre WWE network.

Having a PPV every month. And the matches you really want to see are PPV only.

Haye Bellew in March

Wlad AJ in April

Brook Spence in May

If AJ blasts Wlad he could fight in July.

Contrived rivalries to build the PPVs. At least in WWE they keep character straight after a match !

The only thing that can stop this is Wlad destroying AJ.

Years ago in didn't mind them, in fact I used to get excited about them because they were good value, you'd have a genuinely stacked card in the UK and then it would shoot over too the states for more big fights, often there could be several world title fights on one card. Now it's just dog shit, and the sentimental BS commentary makes me want to vomit. I miss Darke and Dempsey.

She's there for equality. And we all know what equality does to standards. It certainly doesn't improve them. I'd love to see her face cloud over as some analyst made reference to historic boxing - "Peralta as we know of course continued versus Foreman with a broken arm," etc.
